Testing paint with a MIL. gauge that paint (was not) washed and waxed as much as other bikes form that time. Every time you wash Lead based paint you remove a thin layer that is why a really clean old bike has thinner paint than a crusty dusty bike. I have painted for over 45 years commercially. Love what you do saving bikes

Buy a dual sport, or an adventure bike, Kawasaki versys 300 is light and under powered, perfect beginner bike, but it does go 100mph, meaning it will cruise down the highway and you won't get ran over, a Suzuki DR650 is a beautiful bike, maybe a little to tall for some people, but one of the lowest big dirt bikes, it still goes 95 mph, and street legal, don't buy a big Harley, don't buy a fast crotch rocket, you need to learn how to ride before becoming the cool guy, a canAm Ryker is a very fun bike for beginners but not technically a fun two wheel bike that can lean in corners, but if you love riding a four wheeler they will be amazingly fun, best wishes, hope you find something fun

@@427cidpower I’m in Fl. As well. You are not wrong about it being too dangerous. I go out at night now for a ride. Nothing like cruising at 1am and the roads mostly to yourself. If you do see a car, 90% chance they are intoxicated though. Don’t wait until you retire, no guarantee you will be able to ride when you get there.

A little advice from personal experience, when dealing with "barn finds," change the brake pads and service the braking system. Had a rear pad shred and locked up the tire at Interstate speed braking for the off ramp. Fortunately, after frantic pumping the rear brake, it came out of the skid, and I was able to regain control. Brake pads are inexpensive compared to what could have happened.

My grandpa had basically the same harley davidson if I remember the stories he told me. His was a early 50's model. And his friend Phill had and BSA and his other friends had Norton. He said always on weekends after their band leave the "bar". One of the bikes will break and he would tow them back to the farm. With band equipment and "girls" on the harley. 😅😂 The Stories he told me of that harley when I was little ... 🎉❤

I'm 80 yrs old and my first Harley was a 1952 flag. Hope you would pull spark plugs and pre mist the cylinder and let it soak a couple days to soften the top of the piston so you don't break the top ring and score the cylinder. Is the S pipe good?? Should be mashed or rusted out.. I rode hard tail pan heads for 33 years. My first cycle was a 1947 Indian Cheif in the back of a collapsing old barn covered in chicken ship. Guys who rode this set up had an extra large left arm muscle from squeezing the clutch handle ( mouse trap.just clean it with a foam gun Or else a McGuire's buffing compound.

Here's the 1954 Anniversary story explanation. In 1901 Bill Harley started work on a small 110cc motor. Progress was slow. With the help of the Davidsons in 1903 they installed it an ordinary bicycle frame. The machine lacked power on hills so they started over again. There is no known photo of this first experimental motorized bicycle. By September 1904 they had 2 running prototypes with a much larger 405cc engine set in a loop motorcycle frame inspired by the 1903 Merkel, then also make in Milwaukee. They entered these prototypes in a race on Sept 8, 1904. The Harley-Davidson was mentioned in newspaper articles about the race. That dates the beginning of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Apparently, in 1954 Harley-Davidson based their anniversary on these successful prototype race bikes that were nearly identical to the first production run of 1905 -- "Model One." There was a book published around 2003 that researched Harley-Davidson's origins that came up with these findings. One of the things that inspired the book was the 1954 50th Anniversary date. Of course Harley-Davidson didn't like the book because they've been claiming for decades that they sold 3 bikes in 1903, when in reality things didn't start popping until 1904-05. But the truth is the truth.
