These old S320s are such great cars Randy very very reliable my dad has had his since 2000 and it’s a 1999 and he loves it to this day very very reliable that car took us everywhere we need to go with zero issues it’s got 176,000 miles now and it’s still perfect no issues never needed anything it’s only needed tires, oil changes, transmission flush and that’s it and it’s in mint condition just used it yesterday

Mercedes-Benz really didn’t want their cars to be stolen. Most Mercedes models you can go to the dealer and buy a new key with just the registration. Unfortunately the W140, R129, R170 and W163 keys are discontinued.

My 2000 C 230 Kompressor has to have a key fob coded to the cars computer or it will not run! ask me how i found that out, Then it was in limp mode and you couldnt even go 45 mph cause the trans was stuck in 2nd gear. These cars are absolute electrical nightmares

I wouldn't recommend this but back in the day when the square booty Buicks Oldsmobiles and stuff the short ones that were constantly being stolen, all the people would do to break the steering wheel lock is just yank the wheel back and forth until it snapped and spun it around to make sure it was free lol I don't know if I would do that with this until after I looked it up but I bet it's a simple push pin or square that just sets in and probably easy to get it out of the way

Quick story Randy if you read this. Back in 2001 I bought my dream car, a low mileage 1996 Impala SS. The only thing it needed was a very expensive set of tires. The day I bought the tires the rear end looked off. Brought it to a Chevy dealer and they said the frame was bent. Clean one owner title and car fax. They took the car back and offered me the exact car you have there. The thought of driving a 6 year old S class was tempting, but I knew I could not afford to fix it so I passed and they gave me my money back. I never did get another SS.

You can use a tool like the Lishi HU39 to pick the ignition and/or the door lock. Then, using the tool (after it's picked), you can read each tumbler for all four tracks. Mercedes-Benz can't make the key- but locksmiths can cut these keys without a problem. The actual key pattern is stored in a database by Mercedes-Benz and some locksmiths do have access to this and can make a key given a VIN (no picking needed).

Just watched, I feel the pain. A friend purchased a used late 80’s Mercedes. Tumbler broke but he got key out. We took the entire dash board out over two days in the parking lot at work. All because one bolt was in a way you could not get to it. When we took the complete tumbler assembly to get a new one at the dealership the parts manager told us nobody ever takes it out like that they just smash it out in pieces. 😂 the tumbler sits on a shelf at his house as a memory to the battle lol.

Great video guys! your two are so funny together. Randy you need to get a set of Lishi key decoders for when you get cars with no keys. The Lishi will let you pick the lock and gives the key code as you pick it to get a key cut. So you don't have to go through what you did with this Mercedes.

I learned from one Mercedes shop that the complexity of the key was due to some consortium of insurance companies in Europe who noted that Mercedes didnt take steps to prevent theft… That said, I always liked the E class better than the S class.

@@ronallen6578 Clearly...I meant when they were newer. In my opinion, just about nothing at the time was built that heavy duty. There was metal everywhere in these cars. When you changed a tailight bulb there was a metal door to get to the bulbs. Car felt live driving a bank vault and high speed stability 80-90mph was amazing, as I recall. Best long range road car I have ever owned . I owned a 1992 from 1998-2004 and put about 100K miles on it. Traded in at 185K miles on a BMW 740i

so the rearview mirror is controlled by buttons in the center console! don't adjust it by hand you can break the gears in it. :( 1995 was the first year they implemented that feature
