Good review. The GT has a lot going for it and older ones are now down to a price that depreciation isn't an issue. If you are going to use it as a daily driver, the running costs are going to be much higher than if it's just a weekend car.

New they have the depreciation of a ships anchor. They have the fuel consumption of Concorde, but are smooth ,refined, and drive nicely . If you have a reason to drive a low mileage the fuel only hurts a bit when you use it, not drive to Scotland from Cornwall every week.

Some years ago, I dreamed of owning an early Bentley Continental and checked out several very nice looking cars in south Florida. But, the thing that stopped me from probably making a big mistake was the stated cost of an extended warranty. A basic extended warranty for three/four years would have cost at least $12K.

CarWow claimed that Bentley was the least reliable car brand in Britain. I've never seen a review of an older one where everything was working, so I can easily believe this. And you're absolutely right. You can argue that the pre-VW Bentleys had some class like the Arnage and Continental R or T. But the COntinental GT and Flying Spur are clearly VW/Audis in a party frock, meant to sell to people with more money than class or good sense. And yes, I feel the same way about post-BMW Rolls-Royces too.

@@CarTrouble I have owned both engine versions. My RR 6.75l version had a head gasket failure, gearbox failure, and numerous smaller issues. Cost me £10k in one year alone. The BMW (4.4l twin Cosworth turbo) never missed a beat in the 30,000 miles I owned it...

I had the same issues with the BMW 850. Bought it when it was 9 years old and 113k ( kilometres ) on the clock. Owned it for 12 months and spent more in that time keeping it running than I actually paid for it

@@CarTrouble The condensed version, is I lived in Germany at the time and worked offshore out of the Netherlands. The diff had developed a knock changing down into second ( auto ) and when I arrived in Holland, I took it to a BMW dealer and the mechanic came for a drive. We drove around the block and pulled back up at the dealership and he said that the “diff is a sealed unit and there is not fixing it, it needs a new one” I asked how much and he opened the door, started laughing and walked off back into the dealership! I drove off and pulled up at a Volvo dealership and asked how much for the V40 out front and how much would they give me on the 850? He said he would give me 4.5k Euro and I asked do you want to drive it? He said no. Deal was done there and then. Volvo purchase was so I could get home after the job!

Agree with your endless positive comments / very entertaining ! Keep up your natural humor ! Also have noticed many replies to comments so hoping there’s a spare minute to answer this - you mentioned it’s not a “cool” car. What do you consider “cool” in the 4 seater/ 2 door market as a second hand version ? I have been eyeing the GT (2nd hand, 2nd gen.) but not entirely convinced.

When you fired up the engine it reminded me of my Audi A8 which also liked to flatten its battery but I didn't have a second one for back up. I used to open the boot and disconnect the battery everytime I parked it, it was the only guarantee that it would restart. Luckily the Battery was in the boot and didn't arouse peoples curiosity if I opened the bonnet on a luxury car that happened once with my old Merc. I miss both those cars. The build quality was there.

I made a similar mistake with a Rolls Silver Spur. I kept hearing about all this pulling power the Rolls had from the 440 cubic inch aluminium (since you're a Brit I spelled it your way) block V-8. That was a myth, when your car tops out at 310 stone, it takes a turbine engine to make it quick. Mine had 60K miles on it when I bought it, the interior was beautiful but the seats had been re-upholstered. Real wool carpeting, real burl walnut trim. Even had the hidden bumbershoot inside the door well. One quirk, the air-bag, gas shocks in the rear would bleed air after a day or two of sitting and not running it, so it would squat in the rear like it was doing its business. I put 8K USD into a freakishly good sounding audio system, but because the petrol tank sits between the rear seat back and the boot, the 1200 dollar/watt subwoofer was barely audible inside the vehicle, though my neighbors would start dancing whenever I drove by. My first visit to the local Rolls dealer for service ran about 7500 USD, it seems they needed to replace the rack and pinion steering unit as it was worn beyond refitting. I was told this was a typical 100,000 mile item for replacement, unfortunately for me mine appeared to falter prematurely. In my case the tennis instructor banged my ex-wife. The refit would have been several thousand fewer dollars. Another quirk I found annoying is that the brake system runs on mineral oil, not brake fluid and it takes about 45 to 60 seconds for the system to charge to full pressure after you first start the engine, so you don't just turn the key, shift gears and stomp on the accelerator if you need to stop soon afterwards. The dealer told me, if you're ever low on brake oil, do NOT put regular brake fluid in the reservoir or it will run about 35,000 USD to clean out the system. Overall I had some fun with the Rolls, driving it was a dream, like sitting in a Barco-lounger that was floating on a cumulus cloud. For some reason people would keep taking photos of me in traffic, I spent a lot of time looking for wanted posters in my town with a shot of me driving it about. Never know what those folks did with those shots. Now I drive a crew cab GMC Sierra pickup, way less expensive to service, and nobody takes my bleedin picture.

I think German cars reputation has dive bombed, especially in the US in the last decade or so, but there's no doubt they used to make ultra reliable cars.. Luckily for me I dont have the money to buy new ones! Thanks for watching! 👍

@Shaun Field ive been lucky with my S500 as previous owner had it for 12 yrs and maintained it well, i have had it for 5 1/2 yrs now and had no major drama's and no electrical issues either just replaced parts through wear and tear as its 18yrs old and you expect things to wear out over that time.

An Auntie of mine had a Granada same time i had mine...her one kept breaking down and was a right dog of a car ( built in UK) yet mine was built in Germany and was super reliabe and well screwed together so go figure that one? It was the bolshy shop steward back in the 70's that helped destroy the car industry back then always going out on strike

Hey Mister, my Peugeot Boxer VAN required a second key, which cost (with programming) £375 . You are just paying normal prices, Mate. At 16 years old and nearly 100K, it has had its life, before a rebuild. That is how things go.

Fab video and so refreshing to find an honest review of one of these "Things" I hate the Bentley Continental to be honest, mainly because of the footballer association; Wayne Rooney for example. That puts me right off for starters. I don't think the Continental is a bad car, but to fork out 15K for what is in essence a proper dog shows how desperate some people will be to buy one just to say "Look at me, I own a Bentley". Bloody sad I think. I will stick with my ordinary car which does it's job fine and I am never worried about a huge repair bill. Thanks for a fab upload, loved it.
