I Bought a Boat - Hornbeck Solo Canoe Setup - Garmin Striker 4 Setup
I Bought a Hornbeck Solo Canoe! I can’t wait to take this boat into some back country ponds for trout and bass and everywhere really. This boat is going to be a fishing machine! I go through the full setup of the boat for my fishing adventures including the Garmin Striker 4 setup and modification, RAM Mounts and Werner Paddle.

I just picked up my new Hornbeckthe first week of June 2023. I bought a Newtricks 14' . I've taken it out a couple times, once on the salt water and once in the fresh water. it is the coolest boat I've ever had, love it. can't believe how light it is and it handles unbelievably well, its fast! I'm taking it out on a 5 day trip in about a week up in northern Maine. I am very psyched! also, the whole experience of buying the boat from Hornbeck was great, they are very professional but they take time with you as a person, not just a customer! An excellent family business that sells an exceptional product very well!

Yeah. They were wonderful to work with for us too! We were lucky enough to meet Pete and he drew some loons and canoes on a poster for us and signed it. He passed away within a year from that. We now have that poster framed.

I’d love to know more about how the battery has worked for you in the Garmin. Can you share any information on how it was wired up? Thanks for making the video, it helped me settle getting my Hornbeck this year!!!

First of all, congrats on getting a Hornbeck! We love ours! The battery and Garmin have worked out very well for me. Very light weight, easy to pack and lasts a long time. Send me a message on Instagram or Facebook. I do have some pictures I took of the wiring that I could send you. I didn't do the wiring myself but others who have asked have said the pictures really helped them.

Love the boat! Finishing the build on a cedar strip 2 seater which will see plenty water this summer, but already considering my options for next year in the form of a solo canoe. Can't wait to see you fish in this.

Oh Nice!! My step-father had a cedar strip canoe "Ruth" when I was younger. It was actually the backdrop in our wedding in Lake Placid. He sold it several years ago but I think he regrets it. I remember paddling her on some nice ADK waters... I'm looking forward to some adventures in the solo canoe too! :)

I am about to demo a Hornbeck solo canoe for fishing (12 or 13 feet) and have reviewed your video. I am very interested in your Garmin Striker 4 setup with the lithium battery, however, i cannot find any links or further descriptions. Are you going to do a video on using the Garmin Striker 4 on your Hornbeck like you did for ice fishing? More details on the lithium battery and transducer set upwould be greatly appreciated.

I notice that your boat does not have a rear thwart but the 13 classic on the website does have one. Did you make a special request or is this part of the fishing package?
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 жыл бұрын
I was try to keep the weight down and they said they had been making a lot of 13' boats without the rear thwart. So we opted to get rid of it. It also make it easier if you carry a big bag or anything. If you want a hornbeck... just talk to them and they'll help you figure out what to get... I highly recommend trying them out before buying so you'll know what feels right!

This set up looks great! I'm planning on purchasing a Sportspal 12' pointed and definitely inspired by your canoe set up. I was wondering how you found the stability of the RAM claws for trolling (especially hitting larger fish) and did you also use a RAM claw to connect to a RAM transducer mount? Thank you. Wonderful video :)

The Ram Mount for the rod hold can move a little bit under pressure but overall is good. I tighten it down pretty good without hurting the wood gunnels for my boat. I use RAM Mounts for the sonar unit as well. I have links in the description of the video to the mounts that I used specifically. The transducer itself uses the suction cup mount provided by Garmin (Garmin Striker 4) to suction to the side of the boat. If you're looking for a portable sonar unit I highly recommend that as well!
@Gary-yo2fv
@Gary-yo2fv 3 жыл бұрын
@@WhiteDogTrailCompany Thanks for the reply. The suction cup mount sounds like a great idea. Much easier than getting an arm over the side. Does the fact that it points to the side of the canoe rather than the front/back of the canoe affect the direction of what is presented on your sonar? Just great work!
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 жыл бұрын
@@Gary-yo2fv As long as the sonar is aiming straight down it reads the same. If it were a directional thing like the side imaging technology I can see that making a difference but this model is just telling you if it sees anything within the cone of the sonar.

I'm considering a Hornbeck but I see in one of your comments you considered Placid Boatworks. What were the determining factors in your final decision of Hornbeck over Placid?
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 3 жыл бұрын
I considered and paddled many boats before settling on Hornbeck. They were all great boats and paddled beautifully. But what settled me on Hornbeck was weight and price. My goal was to carry these boats long distances to get to fishing spots. The other boats were heavier than the Hornbecks and also more expensive. My wife and I have had our boats for a little over 2 years and we LOVE them! Also there is a sense of community within the Hornbeck boating family. Everyone at the shop is wonderful and incredibly helpful!

@@WhiteDogTrailCompany where did you use the suction cup mount? If you had it on the side of the boat, the transducer would be oriented sideways, no? Did you reach all the way under and mount on the bottom?
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 2 жыл бұрын
@@richromano1093 No... you can adjust the angle of the transducer by moving it by hand. I suction it to the side just below the surface of the water and then angle it so it is aiming down. Pretty easy to do.

Electricity is not my area of expertise... I had to have someone help me set it up. The battery is super light, easily packable and lasts forever though so it is worth the time to get it set up. If you message me on our facebook I'll send you some pictures of how mine is set up and I can try to get some details on how they did it. Did you get the Hornbeck yoke? what are your thoughts?
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 4 жыл бұрын
I did not get the yolk as I wanted to see how difficult it is to carry over one shoulder over a distance. My longest hike so far has been about 1.3 miles (2.6 round trip). kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4jWYpyclph2j9E I handled it well without the yolk. I think I will be planning on doing the external frame backpack though for longer trips. Check out "Nature into Action".. he just got a 12' classic and bought the yolk... He just finished his first trip with it... I'm pretty sure he was happy with it but hit him up... he's a nice guy and will definitely answer. @natureintoaction on instagram or look him up on youtube. @@michaelcowart6100 Yeah... I looked at the yolk when I bought too and I didn't dig it. I've heard the external frame backpack is a great way to carry... plus I can carry a lot of gear in it since I'll probably only use it on longer trips. Haven't pulled the trigger on it yet though... When I was looking at boats the Placid Boatworks guys had a strap you put around the boat that looked a little more comfortable and easy to handle. Maybe check them out?

Man I just don't know. 20lbs is awesome but I'm pretty sure you won't be ramming that sucker up against the rocks like the good 'ol indestructible Coleman. Should be interesting.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 5 жыл бұрын
LOL... Hopefully I'm a better paddler than to be ramming against too many rocks. They are actually much tougher than you would think though... I mean they're made of kevlar! If I'm going to float a river with rocks I'll use an ole beater canoe or kayak because it doesn't really matter how well they paddle in that situation and you're putting in and taking out at a road crossing. But if you want to cut through the water like butter and be able to carry back into ponds where few people fish or put some real distance on a trip... these solo canoes are amazing. I paddled this exact boat for a weekend last year in the ADKs and they are amazing to paddle and great to fish from.

Nice review, I subscribed to your channel! good thing you are happy; My experience with Hornbeck was really bad: I am suing this company (and let everyone know about this everywhere) for my transaction back in September 2018 because Josh lied to me and sold me a boat that does not fit my needs; too light for what I wanted; I did the "deal" on the phone, never had chance to test it as they are in NY and I am in Las Vegas but they not only screwed me with the order, they also screwed me with the delivery as it failed to be as agreed upon in time for a planned trip I had to cancel after having to drive from Las Vegas to Fontana, California to pick up in person a boat that supposed to be delivered to my city; no accountability from shipper XPO or Hornbeck, now my boat sits in the garage only used 3 times; it also came scratched in the hull from maybe used already? I ended up having to buy a Swift pack 13.6 which suits me better with my weight and the gear I want to carry; coincidently the day you posted this video was about the same time I bought the Swift canoe which is a bit heavier @ 28 pounds compared to the 18 of the Hornbeck Classic 12' but it fits my needs better; Bill Swift did for me what Josh at Hornbeck needed to do but failed misserably and that is making sure the client walks out with a boat he is going to be happy with, not just "make a sale and call next" since Hornbeck lied to me, apparaently they care more the money they charge than good customer service; I asked for a refund and to send it back to his expense but was denied because "those are custom made orders" which is why they are being sued for fraud in the amount charged and damages as my credit have been ruined in the process. For him it was a simple easy ordeal to screw me but I will chase this bloke to the end of the world and will make clear to him that nobody robs me out of my money, especially not some wise ass monkey from New York! For those watching, beware of these people; if you want a boat the best way is to do it right, which I really regret I did not do in this case and my part of fault here; go there and test it so you get the right one; I am sure if I did that I would have not being in this trouble now but the way Josh handled it was shitty nonetheless in my case and for that he will pay sooner or later in court and I hope with customers too; those $1795.00 he took (Actually it was $2339.00 with shipment and all for the whole "deal") for a boat that does not fit the client needs after we spoke for so long what I needed and why, he will feel them burning a hole on him the same way he has made it feel for me! -- Your boat is a beauty and I am glad you are happy with it and you was not ecrewed as they did to me! I have learned since that the key is be in person for these kind of investments so there are zero chance to get screwed.
@WhiteDogTrailCompany
@WhiteDogTrailCompany 5 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree that you should be in person to chose the boat that is right for you and make sure you paddle them all. I paddled Hornbeck, Placid Boatworks, Slip Stream, Swift and North Star before making a choice. I have had nothing but great experience with Hornbeck. When one boat ran into production delays they gave us a loaner boat to use in the meantime. They were incredibly helpful throughout the whole process. Ultimately they can guide you down the path they think is right but if you don't paddle it then you won't know and that is not on them. The shipping issue... that may be a different story. I did really like the swift... I paddled your exact boat as well as a few others.. but for me I was looking for a lighter boat that I could carry to back country ponds.
