It's a state. The uk ebay has just been filled with them as well. We've had really real-passing knock off 11/12 and 9/10 sonics for a few years now fill the marketplace also. I don't know why Character options are being so difficult with there releases. I'd guarantee that no UK kid managed to get a fourteenth screwdriver when they were first stocked because man-children (like me) bought them out within minutes. Doctor Who toys weren't sold like this when I was a kid.

I'm in the US and just got my 14th Doctor Sonic from eBay. When I started your video, my heart sank because I also received the SAME funko keychain for no reason. But turns out, mine is either genuine or a REALLY good fake. The claws pop out properly. The light is blue. The cracked print on the handle is clean. Everything seems fine. I got mine for $40 usd which is closer to 60 A$.

ATTENTION!!! DO NOT flick it open too much, otherwise the electronics will stop working. This is a problem presented in the official version as well.

Damn, they work fast. I mean, think of the amount of effort needed to take a mold of an official toy, and the costs. First, you have to get your hands on an official Character Options screwdriver, then you have to take it apart without damaging the shell too much, because then you’re going to have to take a 3d scan of it. Once you have the 3d scan, you have to make a mold by using a CNC machine to cut a piece of aluminum into the proper shape. I ended up buying 3 of these knock-offs. My first order was for a chrome version, and a regular version, then the second order was for another chrome version. I knew it was a knock off when I got the first order, because of the zip ties. Although I still decided to buy another chrome version incase the first one got damaged, since for as bad as it is that it’s fake, it still looks great on a shelf. Another thing, I got the knock offs for cheaper than the official one from an AliExpress store known as Allen Wu’s toy store, he’s based in china, and sells knock off 10th Doctor sonics. The reason why I’m saying this is because the official one can go for 100+ dollars on Amazon from third party sellers, so might as well just get the knock off if you just want to play with the mold. It is scummy that he’s marketing it as an official one, but at least I get to play with the 14th Doctor’s Sonic in some capacity, rather than paying 150 dollars to a shoddy eBay seller.

@@jeffreylai8184the prongs on mine aren’t loose. However, I wouldn’t flick it open too much, as the electronics can stop working. This is a problem presented on the official ones as well.

Sam thing happened to me. It sucks for us Aussies because we can't get these because of the battery laws. First red flag for me was the zip ties used to hold it in the box and the lighting bled through the plastic when turned on. I just disputed it with eBay and they got me a refund so I encourage anyone else to do the same.

I cannot tell whether mine is a bootleg sonic. The switch when turning it on seems to stay on longer than it should, and on the second setting, there seem to be some extra colours coming through too. Very interesting

Yeah mine does the same and i see blend of red, blue and green kinda giving a purplish color. So afraid to say its leaning towards a bootleg

I purchased mine on eBay pretty early in the release of character options announcing the screwdriver. Mine was roughly $45 shipped to the US. My claws have a similar issue, but I don’t have to force it too hard to open properly. I also noticed that the color on my screwdriver started to change when I would extend the emitter. I wouldn’t mind having a white light, but mine turns green and red every now and then. Quite frustrating

currently going through this with the 15th Doctors, I got a 14th from the character website when they were first released and it arrived safely but I have heard customs will destroy it if they find it doesn't comply and the shipping cost as much as the sonic. All hope is gone.

I have a feeling the same thing has happened to me, but mine actually didn't work (even though the batteries were fully charged). I sent it back and am still waiting for a refund.

I gave up on waiting for an official rerelease and got the online version from a eBay seller in China. After an initial panic where it said the package was being returned, the seller then provided me a US tracking number and it showed up today. Opened up the box and it looks legit (no Funko figure) and the basic electronics work. After playing with it, though, I noticed some things like 1) a loose neck covering that doesn't line up with the circles properly 2) the button to supposedly change the light colors does nothing 3) the petals don't pop out all the way when the slider is completely at the top 4) there is a delay with pressing the button and the effects occurring and when I let go of the button it takes a few for the effects to turn off. All this being said--these all seem like issues that could just be manufacturer errors I can look past (I understand it's a toy and those can vary in quality, evenly officially) and it still looks good and I think I'll keep it for future cosplaying.

I bought 2 from eBay that were clearly fake. The dead giveaway for me was the light shining through the paint. When I went to file a claim, the seller closed his account. eBay refunded me and I was able to keep the sonics. I'll probably try to take them apart and properly paint them. Maybe they'll be decent after that. Mine thankfully extend just fine.

I just came back from oz comic really excited when I found it. mine seems to have a delay when you release the button like it takes a second before it shuts off now I see you video I realize it is probably the same one you said but had to pay $60 for it.

Yo dude, I looked at other boxes for the sonic. The logo also has some bad cutting, maybe you did get a bootleg. Apparently there is a problem with the board that causes the led to change to a light purple shade.

This isn't a bootleg, it's a standard release that a scalper on eBay has repackaged.

It's a bootleg, because the packaging and the sonic construction itself differs from the standard release. The light effects and the quality is noticeably different from the CO release.

Live in Miami and yeah, US users also beware, same thing here. I got the chrome one (twice… I know) one has the exact same dodgy crackle print as yours but the second one doesn’t, it’s pretty normal looking. The boxes are the don’t have the cropped issue. Both sonics have the white default setting instead of blue but still have all the extra colour setting. They also exude a weird grease or something, it’s weird. I don’t know what I have exactly compared to yours. I kept both, I might just give one of them to a friend who’s just getting back into the show. But yeah. Really disappointed

That's really disappointing, but what I WILL say is that for a bootleg, this is genuinely really convincing. Like, I can't help but feel a little bit impressed. You can see the proportion discrepancies next to the real version, but it's actually really similar. Even the stuff like the tape, I wouldn't put past an official product. I've seen Character make far worse replicas of on-screen sonics than this is of the official Character replica.

I knew something was off...bought both versions from ebay and received the exact funko keychain of aragorn from LOTR. The light was white with a very faint shade of blue which confused me. They both extend fairly smooth, the weight felt decent and to be honest pretty good bootleg if you ask me. The online exclusive version is perhaps the better one cause besides the light not being blue, the secret colors are spot on..I miss the green... and the audio is louder . Now the retail version has light peeking through the plastic top section which is bent or perhaps warped so it just looks weird and puts me off. Yeah I'm bummed about this but really ok with it. I paid a 100 bucks for both through paypal credit which i pay off in 6 months. I will buy a legit one but only the retail version ,for reasons stated earlier , and keep the other one cause it looks cool with the red color option, a sith enthusiast , and put along my sonic collection it sticks out like a sore thumb...not in a bad way really. Yeah it looks all shiny and "realistic " but I prefer the look of the retail version cause it blends well with the other screwdrivers. Now I think about maybe the funko is a bootleg too? or perhaps its real to fool us into believing its real...like a red herring...

@@AFI.Sydney The compartment is secured by a screw. I understand the guidelines but this is just stupid. The product is safe yet for one reason or another (my guess is a captive screw) it’s not allowed in Australia. But then nothing stops the Chinese knockoff of worse quality flooding the market.

I still have my order with sanity, I contacted them to get an eta on shipment and was told that it was being held up due to the battery compartment. I opted to keep my order and hope it gets sorted soon. Very almost got one off eBay but i was bitten once before with an 11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver with the 10th Doctor re-release sound chip. Was really cheap. came in bashed packaging fell apart in a few days. Got a partial refund because i wasn't bother to attempt to send it back. Thanks for the warning. I have tried my luck at an online exclusive version from what seems to be a reputable seller who has sold different sonics in the past. Its in the mail now but heres hoping i didn't just get scammed. For anyone wondering what fucked up guidelines Australia has that stops this sonic from being officially imported by retailers. The Guidelines state that must not release the battery's during normal use(or reasonable misuse), it must survive a drop test without releasing the battery's and the battery compartment must have a captive screw . . . . This sonic is being held up over not having the correct screw 🤦 Fuck Me man
