I rode my new 690 SM home from the dealer only to have oil dripping on the floor from the countershaft seal. Had the seal replaced under warranty, and it leaked just the same. I think the countershaft itself was probably the problem. In any case I traded it in shortly thereafter due to the leak and it having more false neutrals than any bike I had ridden in well over 40 years of riding. In fairness, I bought a second one later, and it had neither problem. So 50/50 success rate.

Congratulations on purchasing the 2nd best motorcycle(1st best is the 701 enduro ;)). I've got a 701 enduro as my only bike and it's wonderful, I've put 4,000 miles on it in 3 months. I'm sure you've done your research but there's a couple things I wanted to point out for people that may be interested in this bike. Despite the oil leak you have, you're correct in saying these bikes are fairly reliable now. However, there are still a few little quirks. Firstly, I implore you to re-route the sidestand switch as soon as you can or purchase the bypass dongle and carry it with you any time you ride. This platform uses a magnet sensor for the sidestand switch, and the magnet likes to work its way loose and leave you stranded. It's not like older bikes where you can just wire it together as a trailside fix either. You have to bypass it with a fancy $90 dongle or re-route it. I didn't want to pay for a dongle and I'm used to not having a sidestand sensor so I simply rewired it to sit under the seat and I taped and heatshrinked a magnet to the sensor. The other thing is if you intend to put luggage on this bike, definitely do the perun moto subframe reinforcement. The strength of the subframe bolts isn't ideal for luggage offroad and there's many stories of people shearing them off. It hasn't been fixed as far as I'm aware. And finally there's the notorious clutch slave o-ring failure. This has been fixed on new bikes but if somebody is reading this and looking to buy used, it's worth noting. The o-ring in the stock clutch slave tends to fail, and then you no longer have a clutch and also clutch fluid leaks into the engine. It's an easy fix via a new o-ring without the defect or with an oberon clutch slave. It was fixed on 2021 and later bikes for the 701, I'm not sure what year for the KTM. Finally, a couple of other things. I agree that these bikes are a bit overpriced, however, you can get very lucky on the used market. I for example bought my 2019 701 with 2k miles on it for $7500. Now this was in december in the US so I did get the bonus of it being winter, but it is possible to find deals on these machines. And it already had a seat concepts seat which is great. Also if you like the intake sound, the Rade garage fuel tank kit that changes the airbox makes it even more aggressive. It genuinely sounds like a rally bike. Some people hate it but I love it. Just make sure that you email them to get the VAT coupon before ordering anything from them if you're in the US, as VAT is included in their prices and it is not automatically deducted. As for exhausts, I think the wings exhaust is the best value. It's a titanium slip on that you can purchase from the factory for like $350. They sound great and they do come with silent baffles. Also the rottweiler fuel dongle and canister/SAS delete are worth doing for sure. Big Rock Moto's review of this bike is absolutely spot on. It's no contest the closest thing to the dual-sport/ADV unicorn if you put in the time and $$$$ to get it there. But it's also a jack of all trades master of none.
@Wooskii17 ай бұрын
That's good info to know, thanks. You're definitely a KTM (or Husky, or Gas Gas) guy. I'm getting close to joining the cult, if I'm not already a member... I've been trying different bikes (on and off road) over the last few years, and the only bike that made me think "This is IT! I'll never sell it" is the 300xcw (dual sport 😁) that I got last year. And now, the only new off-road bikes I'm even considering are both KTMs (500exc & the 690) or their Husky/ Gas-Gas sisters. I'm heavily leaning towards the 690/ 701 because I grabbed a super cheap '04 450exc just to see if I liked it and it's been holding up great, so I don't feel the need to upgrade while it's working out for me. Seems like the 690/701 is literally my ONLY choice if I want an "Adventure" bike that's not closer to a full on touring bike in size and weight. I thought the Yamaha Tenere 700 might be nice, but it still feels too big and top heavy for my taste, so 690 it is, I guess.

I’ve had 4 KTMs and a couple of husqvarnas. (A 701 included) (all newer than 2019) I never had any major issues, but then I didn’t put loads of miles on them. BUT. None of them liked lots of water. Electrics ain’t waterproof at all. Even on brand new ones. Not that they would brake down. But dash warning lights would randomly turn on if they liked it. Brake lights and headlight would get stuck on high beam or just not work until it dried out. And I found lots of rust on a 2 year old 350excf frame (hidden under bashplate) Things like that. I think most of the major elements are now pretty solid. Suspension, engine etc. but the paint quality and electrics are still a long way off matching Japanese’s quality.

Good review on the 690. I own a 21 and love it! I have had no issues yet(key word being "yet"). KTM short for Keep Throwing Money ! . I work at a dealer and that is the last brand I would spend my hard earned money on. That brand is job security for our techs, so many warranty jobs and repairs in general.

Spite, you saw me at msrh with my 701sm. It was super fun and performed amazing. These bikes are worth the trouble tbh.

I almost bought some new Flying Eyes but I quickly backed out when I saw the eye watering price they charge for prescription. I can get transition lenses from Costco for half of what they charge for prescription. Oh well...

KTM is fine. They're fine. It's fine. I had a 1290 SA for awhile and it was also stupid fast. 160HP, quick shifter, etc. That's fun and all, but it was way too top-heavy to corner very well and too heavy to be any fun off-road. The 690 should be superior in both respects, but it's hard to really know as long as you're blowing oil everywhere. Maybe if the Austrians could focus long enough to produce consistent results, that would be helpful.
@spitescorner8 ай бұрын
FWIW my success rate with the 690s holding oil is 50%. My SMCR was more or less flawless once I replaced the slave cylinder. The frame issues were a result of theft, not the bike breaking down.
@carver76898 ай бұрын
@@spitescorner I remember that - your SMCR was stolen (or attempted stolen) more than once, wasn't it? So you know how desirable KTMs can be. When they're good, they're very very good. But when they're bad, oh brother. The SA I mentioned before was mechanically fine, but it was just too cumbersome to fully enjoy. I thought about switching to a Duke, but KTM's bad reputation with quality control scared me off. Now I see you're having issues with your brand new 690 and man, it's just annoying. KTM needs to get their shit together.

Dead right about the KTM/GasGas comparison. I went to buy the GG and happily paid the extra for Orange. 👍

Impressive bike! What's your take: would it be wiser to opt for an SMC R and equip it with off-road tires, or to go for an Enduro R and fit it with road tires instead?
@spitescorner8 ай бұрын
From what I've heard it's harder to take the SMC-R and get it in dirt trim than it is to get the Enduro R in sumo trim. The only downside is I miss the crazy hot mode 2 on the SMC-R and the four pot front break. The two pot is fine though.
