Pro tip from your Uncle Stranger, don't use Windex on plastic as over time it can cause hazing and cracking. Wash with warm soapy water and then rub on lemon pledge. Makes plastic look good and smell good too! Sorry, not interested in the KLR but if you want to sell the Griso do let me know!

@@carlosandleon Lemon pledge is a furniture polish and wax. When applied to clean plastic it forms a see through seal which will protect the the windscreen or visor. I wouldn't recommend lemon juice due to its high acidity. The lemon in lemon pledge refers to the scent, but I believe it also comes in orange.

I rode my new 690 SM home from the dealer only to have oil dripping on the floor from the countershaft seal. Had the seal replaced under warranty, and it leaked just the same. I think the countershaft itself was probably the problem. In any case I traded it in shortly thereafter due to the leak and it having more false neutrals than any bike I had ridden in well over 40 years of riding. In fairness, I bought a second one later, and it had neither problem. So 50/50 success rate.

Congratulations on purchasing the 2nd best motorcycle(1st best is the 701 enduro ;)). I've got a 701 enduro as my only bike and it's wonderful, I've put 4,000 miles on it in 3 months. I'm sure you've done your research but there's a couple things I wanted to point out for people that may be interested in this bike. Despite the oil leak you have, you're correct in saying these bikes are fairly reliable now. However, there are still a few little quirks. Firstly, I implore you to re-route the sidestand switch as soon as you can or purchase the bypass dongle and carry it with you any time you ride. This platform uses a magnet sensor for the sidestand switch, and the magnet likes to work its way loose and leave you stranded. It's not like older bikes where you can just wire it together as a trailside fix either. You have to bypass it with a fancy $90 dongle or re-route it. I didn't want to pay for a dongle and I'm used to not having a sidestand sensor so I simply rewired it to sit under the seat and I taped and heatshrinked a magnet to the sensor. The other thing is if you intend to put luggage on this bike, definitely do the perun moto subframe reinforcement. The strength of the subframe bolts isn't ideal for luggage offroad and there's many stories of people shearing them off. It hasn't been fixed as far as I'm aware. And finally there's the notorious clutch slave o-ring failure. This has been fixed on new bikes but if somebody is reading this and looking to buy used, it's worth noting. The o-ring in the stock clutch slave tends to fail, and then you no longer have a clutch and also clutch fluid leaks into the engine. It's an easy fix via a new o-ring without the defect or with an oberon clutch slave. It was fixed on 2021 and later bikes for the 701, I'm not sure what year for the KTM. Finally, a couple of other things. I agree that these bikes are a bit overpriced, however, you can get very lucky on the used market. I for example bought my 2019 701 with 2k miles on it for $7500. Now this was in december in the US so I did get the bonus of it being winter, but it is possible to find deals on these machines. And it already had a seat concepts seat which is great. Also if you like the intake sound, the Rade garage fuel tank kit that changes the airbox makes it even more aggressive. It genuinely sounds like a rally bike. Some people hate it but I love it. Just make sure that you email them to get the VAT coupon before ordering anything from them if you're in the US, as VAT is included in their prices and it is not automatically deducted. As for exhausts, I think the wings exhaust is the best value. It's a titanium slip on that you can purchase from the factory for like $350. They sound great and they do come with silent baffles. Also the rottweiler fuel dongle and canister/SAS delete are worth doing for sure. Big Rock Moto's review of this bike is absolutely spot on. It's no contest the closest thing to the dual-sport/ADV unicorn if you put in the time and $$$$ to get it there. But it's also a jack of all trades master of none.

That's good info to know, thanks. You're definitely a KTM (or Husky, or Gas Gas) guy. I'm getting close to joining the cult, if I'm not already a member... I've been trying different bikes (on and off road) over the last few years, and the only bike that made me think "This is IT! I'll never sell it" is the 300xcw (dual sport 😁) that I got last year. And now, the only new off-road bikes I'm even considering are both KTMs (500exc & the 690) or their Husky/ Gas-Gas sisters. I'm heavily leaning towards the 690/ 701 because I grabbed a super cheap '04 450exc just to see if I liked it and it's been holding up great, so I don't feel the need to upgrade while it's working out for me. Seems like the 690/701 is literally my ONLY choice if I want an "Adventure" bike that's not closer to a full on touring bike in size and weight. I thought the Yamaha Tenere 700 might be nice, but it still feels too big and top heavy for my taste, so 690 it is, I guess.

I’ve had 4 KTMs and a couple of husqvarnas. (A 701 included) (all newer than 2019) I never had any major issues, but then I didn’t put loads of miles on them. BUT. None of them liked lots of water. Electrics ain’t waterproof at all. Even on brand new ones. Not that they would brake down. But dash warning lights would randomly turn on if they liked it. Brake lights and headlight would get stuck on high beam or just not work until it dried out. And I found lots of rust on a 2 year old 350excf frame (hidden under bashplate) Things like that. I think most of the major elements are now pretty solid. Suspension, engine etc. but the paint quality and electrics are still a long way off matching Japanese’s quality.

Good review on the 690. I own a 21 and love it! I have had no issues yet(key word being "yet"). I can say that my Africa Twin has that same leak at the stator wire seal.😢 The place where the 690 excels is dirt roads as it's heavy for a trail bike and light for a street bike. Find your favorite dirt road and enjoy! 😁😎

He said he was getting a billet one because he has already replaced the o ring 2 times and it continues to leak so definitely a problem with quality control. Ran a fully kitted DRZ SM for two seasons. Was a lot of fun. Could easily run it to its limits on the street. Last October I sold it to a coworker and stepped up to a pre-owned 21 KTM SMCR. Already has all the go-fast goodies and tuned. Even came with all the OEM bits except the stock can. It's definitely a huge upgrade. I really like the valve adjustment set-up. Can easily find the limits of the DRZ in a short time if you're an experienced rider. The limits on the KTM are much higher and expend the fun factor quite a bit. I've yet to get the two bikes out on the same roads. That should be interesting. Hope my coworker buddy doesn't die.😏 The KTM is a really decent bit of kit. No issues with it yet.

They are two entirely different motorcycles the 690 is still a fun bike, but the 500 being 230lbs making almost the same HP uncorked, the engine characteristics geometry of the bike and less rotating mass it’s just the better bike in every situation you mentioned in the video. If you want the funnest supermoto there is and a dirtbike that can literally do anything you throw at it feel 10x better than a 690 in the trails and 20x better in the twisties with supermoto wheels the bike your looking for is the 500. Side note: I would hope you take care of your bikes and clean the bike often enough that the color of a seat cover shouldn’t really cause any type of an inconvenience your already washing the bike. (I hope) 🤣

The real issue with the 500s is they're extremely unforgiving. I'm a professional amateur, and I'm willing to admit that that much power with the snap that those motors have is too much for me. The 690 is fast, but also forgiving.
@scottforti3194
@scottforti3194 7 ай бұрын
@@spitescorner I hear you for sure but you get use to the power and it’s not as aggressive as the more lively 450 but a lot more forgiving with maintenance as it doesn’t have to work as hard to achieve same power and it’s just so much more fun in all the scenarios you mentioned

You should have got a 500 if you love riding trails and want to be able to connect you can still do miles on the 500 it’s not bad at all 500 hours valves haven’t moved original top end

But will it fit in the van? Or does it have to live outside on the carrier like the KLR did? And I'll fight you over that Duke 200 comment. I just picked one up as a cheap commuter & it's a hoot! It's Grom levels of fun on a "full size" bike that my fat arse can actually ride at the speed limit & beyond on every road here in Australia. Plus it's in the cheapest category for registration & insurance over here.

My 200 finally kicked the bucket after 50k+ commuting, followed by another 20k doing food delivery duties. To say it had a hard life would be an understatement! Such a fun little bike, and the fastest I've ever ridden through the commute's twisties. If I still commuted I'd happily buy another. 😉 The 690 is much more fun, though! 😎

Bought a KTM 390 adv and immediately had issues including the engine shutting off when I pulled the clutch in and it not wanting to cold start. Bike spent a ton of time at the shop which they never covered through warranty. Swore off KTMs ever since.

KTM is fine. They're fine. It's fine. I had a 1290 SA for awhile and it was also stupid fast. 160HP, quick shifter, etc. That's fun and all, but it was way too top-heavy to corner very well and too heavy to be any fun off-road. The 690 should be superior in both respects, but it's hard to really know as long as you're blowing oil everywhere. Maybe if the Austrians could focus long enough to produce consistent results, that would be helpful.
@spitescorner

FWIW my success rate with the 690s holding oil is 50%. My SMCR was more or less flawless once I replaced the slave cylinder. The frame issues were a result of theft, not the bike breaking down.
@carver7689
@carver7689 8 ай бұрын
@@spitescorner I remember that - your SMCR was stolen (or attempted stolen) more than once, wasn't it? So you know how desirable KTMs can be. When they're good, they're very very good. But when they're bad, oh brother. The SA I mentioned before was mechanically fine, but it was just too cumbersome to fully enjoy. I thought about switching to a Duke, but KTM's bad reputation with quality control scared me off. Now I see you're having issues with your brand new 690 and man, it's just annoying. KTM needs to get their shit together.

From what I've heard it's harder to take the SMC-R and get it in dirt trim than it is to get the Enduro R in sumo trim. The only downside is I miss the crazy hot mode 2 on the SMC-R and the four pot front break. The two pot is fine though.
