Great old stuff, the gentleman I was taught by (Larry Cosman in Toronto) had a lot of Haydu Brothers burners and stuff. So using the 7 tip crossfire was the norm for me. He had the same vac pump you use too!

thats fantastic! i love how this old equipment seems to last forever... add to it the fact that neon manufacture really hasn't changed much in the past 100 years, and a lot of the old equipment is still useable & functional!

I feel like my kids right now watching other kids open toys on youtube. I could watch this all day.

haha. the seller didn't know what all equipment was there, they just wanted it gone... so i too felt like a kid digging through all the boxes when i got it back to the shop! :)

That Electro-Pounce is super cool. I'm drooling over that old warm white, would love to have a few of thosxe to salvage the phosphor for my own projects. Lucky finds!
@NeonPreservation2 жыл бұрын
if you're looking specifically for phosphors, you can buy dry phosphors designed specifically for neon/plasma applications and use them however you like! strattman.com/neon-phosphors-sale/

@@NeonPreservation Did not know that. Thanks! I usually need much smaller quantities, and those prices are high for my purposes, but it's nice to knolw that's around. I normally keep about as much as is in around one full 4' stick of each color, scraped from small scraps. Now if I cold only dig up some samples of certain old colors of glass tubing. Don't need full sticks, but... you know how hard it is to find old neon stuff at all!

The "bombarder" is actually a tapped autotransformer style choke. Common in the 30s-50s.

oh thats awesome, thank you for enlightening me!

That xenon "light bulb" looks like a plasma globe
@NeonPreservation Жыл бұрын
you're right, it does! plasma globes can be filled with a mixture of gasses at higher pressures, so that must be why it looks similar

Ne, Ar and Xe usually.

Nice!!!! Do you buy and sell old equipment? For the most part I would see a lot of old fires and stuff (from the old timers) from Tubelite, Haydu Brothers (NJ) and Eisler Engineering (NJ). GE seemed to make a solid core bombarder setup in the 1930's (I had one). Never came across any original Claude Neon bending equipment.
@NeonPreservation2 жыл бұрын
i buy what i can find to add to my neon setup/collection. a couple bits in this lot (torch tip, crossfire brackets) were marked with Haydu & Eisler, but i haven't seen any Claude Neon equipment yet!

Those gases are actually in what look like PS35 or PS40 incandescent lamp envelopes, as it is a very cheap way of getting a glass container due to production volumes of thousands per hour. The thingamajig with the knob in the Electro Pounce device is a variable autotransformer.
@NeonPreservation Жыл бұрын
i just did an image search to look at PS35 & PS40 envelopes; you could be on to something! i bet with a slight alteration to the manufacturing process, they could make a batch of the gas flasks on the same machine. excellent observation!

@@NeonPreservation No modification to the ribbon blower would be needed. It looks like they used a modified flare (part of what would be the mount assembly in a normal lamp that seals into the envelope neck) that has a protruding glass tube for connection to the pumping apparatus. They would then be chucked up in a glassblowing lathe, a hole poked in the end of the bowl/crown and a filling tube attached. Major lampmakers used to sell lamp components (envelopes, mounts, filament wire, bases, etc.) to smaller lampmakers, so this isn't that unusual.

I never understand why those 'machining channels' have millions of subscribers that love watching some dude weld a pipe together or take rust off a bolt for half an hour, so boring! THIS is where it's at! NEON! Like 10 thousand times more interesting! Are you saying when the glass overheats and doesn't have enough oxygen at 4:20 the lead in the glass is reduced back to its metallic state? I never knew that was a thing. Isn't that 1051 stuff called a Penning mix or something?
@NeonPreservation3 жыл бұрын
Neon IS way more interesting! :) and you are correct on both questions! that mix of noble gases is indeed a Penning Mixture, and a rich flame will strip the oxygen from the glass and reduce the lead oxide to lead metal!

Dude for real I was wonderng why no one cares about neon I'm happy I saw at least one modern video about it I really am just curious how their controllers are, (the flickering in pattern, etc) it's just probably relays but I'd be interested to see how they're put to gether

you're in luck, i have a playlist of the mechanical flashers that control the flashing/scintillating of the signs! Mechanical Flashers kzbin.info/aero/PLwUyw8JW9qAiOCWuIMkZicRbIv6Mty62b there are electronic ways to do it these days but i don't think they're as interesting 😉

@@NeonPreservation Honestly thanks c: please make more content on these, they're interesting! I got to interest and it reminded me of mainly due to the Route66 videos, god some signs there have LIFE (much don't know) kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4bbfWqPiLiZbbs& and yes hahaha transistors are everywhere now so yeah, they could do anything now but surely never as interesting or reliable

What website do you go to find all of this stuff? I am interested in trying to set up a station at my shop. I have all the fires just not the bombarder or choke.
@NeonPreservation3 жыл бұрын
as you have may have discovered, used neon equipment is not very common. it pops up randomly, so you just have to keep an eye out. craigslist, ebay, FB marketplace, etc. if you're looking for new bombarding equipment, i know EGL sells it (possibly others as well): www.egl-lighting.com/bombarders/ if you're a DIY kind of person who is very knowledgeable with electrical wiring, it is possible to use a surplus pole-mount transformer (a.k.a., "pole pig"), and make your own choke.

Is it a UV-A type of torch? (tube color tester)
@NeonPreservation2 жыл бұрын
it is UV-C type, they are often sold as "germicidal" lamps. it's just some cheap chinese one i got on ebay for like $5 USD. dont look at the light, it will damage your retinas!
