I used to have an obsession with Porsche when I was a kid. To the point where for my birthday my dad took me to the local Porsche store. This was around 2004 - 2006. But ever since they changed the front lights design I no longer like the car that much. The lights you have on this design are the old ones that I loved but at some point they changed the lights back to a more circular design.

KZbin and social media have accelerated the appreciation of many used goods, not only cars. Good vs bad, more people are aware of hidden gems but at the same time value and demand curve is not "human scale" anymore and can change overnight.

I worked for an auto auction in 2005 and drove this same car through the block, it sold for $72,000 and on the back road leading to the parking lot I floored it at 5 MPH I was instantly thrown back in the seat, my head hit the headrest my heart was pounding then I ran out of road as the first gear limiter kicked in around 60 MPH... It was the most thrilling few seconds I've had in a car to this day....awesome car!

One of my very good friends is the Master Tech at a Porsche dealership prior and now works for the Porsche Museum out of Stuttgart doing mechanical restoration. He swears up and down that the 996 turbo is very sound and solid mechanically overall. Does avoid some of the issues of the standard Carrera. And, obviously, the performance is pretty insane considering what you pay for one of these days. These will be going for a lot more 10 or 15 years from now. Get it while you can guys.

This is an awesome buy! These turbos in this condition usually go for $45k-50k so you did good my friend! I wouldn't hesitate to bring this car to the track as it has a dry sump but please find a magician to remove your curse first.

@@danger450 996's are the best value in used sports cars at the moment. Very underrated and amazing to drive. The 996 Turbo got the Mezger engine, meaning it wasn't susceptible to IMS failure. It's also nudging R8 V10 performance with a far lower price tag. To call the 996 anything other than a success is delusional.

When I was younger and still living at home , my folks went to Las Vegas for a week. They told me not to drive my moms brand new 95 twin turbo Supra . They swore they would know if I took it out. Well I took it out , they still to this day have no idea I took it out. I had a lot of fun that week. 18 years old with a twin turbo Supra , you can only imagine. It’s the only time it ever got raced.

The problem with the 996 front end for me was, from the front I couldn't tell if it was a 911 or Boxster coming down the road. The two cars had the same front clip which I thought to be a cheap cop-out from Porsche. The 996 was an exercise in cost cutting. When the 997 came out in 2005 I fell in love with the looks, interior, 'lobster fork' wheels, and that finally a 911 had more horsepower than my '89 928 S4. I still have both cars.

I have a 2002 996 and love it!!!! I have the 19” turbo rims with 12mm spacers. Makes the car look amazing. I like the rims on your turbo they make the car look more up to date.

@@ianzhu5606 on pump gas I would get 27-28 mpg cruising on the highway. On E85 I would get like 8 mpg when I was driving fast. All depends. But I definitely didn't build it with gas mileage in mind haha.

A very rational addition to your stable. I had a red 996 GT3 and it was amazing to drive. To alleviate the wonky look of the headlights I got pre-painted stick on 'eyelids' that covered the fried egg runoff that somewhat improved its aesthetic. They were cheap and might be something to consider.

The two vids he’s posted have convinced me to pressure wife into getting one I compared 996 and 997 prices and mileage out there and it’s true, few people like the fried egg headlights. But as far as I’m aware, the front clips of an 0’06-‘12 997 with bolt right up on a 996. And you can do that little project for a good bit less than buying a similar- mileage , 3-4 year newer 997. Yes, the 997 is a tad wider in the rear with aesthetic improvements, more power, better handling/braking but not by a TON.. Especially if you find an X50 optioned 996 with 50 more HP.,. But most important thing is full documentation on service up to date, no previous collisions - ignore CarFax it’s a scam. Feel panel edges for tape lines/irregularities in smoothness of panels are all the edges. , Look carefully everywhere for overspray or changes in natural orange peel. If something is missing, just know it could cost you. I’m Sure there’s more but those are my thoughts. We’re in a perfect time relation for these cars to be affordable enough to buy a lower mileage example and use it as daily transportation and not feel bad about it. 911 MSRP for 996’s was $115k bade. 911 MSRP’s for a 2020 911 is $245k. The new ones are a lot more. But the price over 18 years for new ones almost DOUBLED. That’s insane. What’d you rather have, a 2017 Shelby GT350 with 25/30k miles or a low mileage 02 997 Twin Turbo Porsche - instant classic? Considering the even even the lesser powered 996 Turbo (415 hp without X50 pkg which is worth 44 extra hp - 460hp), the car weighs in at 3,300 lbs, which is less than my 70 Cuda. So my wife’s 996 red other way will be able to beat both my built 600hp 6,500 lb. Ram SRT-10, as well as my stroked small block, with all the tricks that duno’d NA at 520hp/540 two. In a 3,800-3,900 lb restomod Cuda. I’ve dropped $21k price + $10k accessories and a $20k performance rebuild on the Ram since I got it in 2014 ( can’t predict if a trucks gonna trash two bearings/journals) total $50k. And let’s just say I’ve got a few nickles unfer $100k in the Cuda. But my wife’s grocery getter is gonna whip my butt I’m a heads up race? THAT SUCKS! But z a Porsche’s rule. I’m gonna have to supercharge the Cuda, no way around it.

The 996 GT3, GT2 and Turbo's are solid cars. Their engines are based on the crankcase from the previous aircooled 964/993 "Mezger-engines" and also have a true dry-sump system, unlike the standard 996's. The cylinders don't warp either, unlike the standard M96 engines, and they are coated with nikasil - because racecar. Actually the M96 GT3/GT2/Turbo engines are probably the most reliable water-cooled Porsche boxer engines made... Good choice sir. NOW PUT SOME STRAIGHT PIPES ON IT! :D

Three reasons why Porschephiles hated the 996's: 1. The headlights were a bit odd shaped. I personally thought they were OK, but the later 997 was better. 2. Fun fact...the headlights on the 996.2 are closely related to those on the Le Mans winning 1998 Porsche 911 GT1. That is not a bad thing, and some cool pedigree as it's the only 911 generation to have that family tie.
