I worked for an auto auction in 2005 and drove this same car through the block, it sold for $72,000 and on the back road leading to the parking lot I floored it at 5 MPH I was instantly thrown back in the seat, my head hit the headrest my heart was pounding then I ran out of road as the first gear limiter kicked in around 60 MPH... It was the most thrilling few seconds I've had in a car to this day....awesome car!

But ever since they changed the front lights design I no longer like the car that much. The lights you have on this design are the old ones that I loved but at some point they changed the lights back to a more circular design.

One of my very good friends is the Master Tech at a Porsche dealership prior and now works for the Porsche Museum out of Stuttgart doing mechanical restoration. He swears up and down that the 996 turbo is very sound and solid mechanically overall. Does avoid some of the issues of the standard Carrera. And, obviously, the performance is pretty insane considering what you pay for one of these days. These will be going for a lot more 10 or 15 years from now. Get it while you can guys.

I never had a problem with the looks of this car. It looks good to me, especially with a nice pair of rims like yours has. Never understood why the extra little part of the headlights turned so many people away. Pretty nit picky if you ask me, if you buy it new I get it, but when it's used and is like half the price of an 06, that's ridiculous to me

The 996 GT3, GT2 and Turbo's are solid cars. Their engines are based on the crankcase from the previous aircooled 964/993 "Mezger-engines" and also have a true dry-sump system, unlike the standard 996's. The cylinders don't warp either, unlike the standard M96 engines, and they are coated with nikasil - because racecar. Actually the M96 GT3/GT2/Turbo engines are probably the most reliable water-cooled Porsche boxer engines made... Good choice sir. NOW PUT SOME STRAIGHT PIPES ON IT! :D

it's not going to help him with the shitty handling. these were def. cool cars, but to praise them as good sports cars is being dishonest. this all changed 2015, but until then the road version cars all had serious issues due to weight distribution. not sure why it's being ignored

I had one of these 10 yrs ago for about 6 months. Engine was strong, especially when chipped to 500 HP. But no personality - big initial push but then totally linear (boring) power delivery, unlike a V8 that pulls harder as the revs climbed. Also horrible as a daily driver. Looked amazing though! Replaced with an FD RX7 which was much more of a rush to drive!

I bought a turbo 911 but sold after 6 months for base 911 4S. The turbo you bouncing of the rev limiter so fast with triple digits in seconds. The slower 911 more enjoyable without the license losing speeds. I have owned a boxster also. Both great vehicles. I own primarily all Teslas now but own a Panamera 4S for my wife’s occasional Use. Porsche makes great dependable cars with beautiful interiors. They offer a 300 Page catalog of just options

I once had a 996 Cab. It was a fun car in the summer. I now have the 997 911 Turbo and it’s crazy quick. I do wish it were a manual. Thanks Hoovie for sharing.

997s are nice, but I find the lines just a tiny bit boring. The 996 lines are more of a modern rethink, and I really like them, especially the fried egg version. This is one reason I ended up buying this rather than saving up for a 997 or 964. The 993 I don't really like the look of, except maybe the Turbo and the GT2.

A very rational addition to your stable. I had a red 996 GT3 and it was amazing to drive. To alleviate the wonky look of the headlights I got pre-painted stick on 'eyelids' that covered the fried egg runoff that somewhat improved its aesthetic. They were cheap and might be something to consider.

The two vids he’s posted have convinced me to pressure wife into getting one I compared 996 and 997 prices and mileage out there and it’s true, few people like the fried egg headlights. But as far as I’m aware, the front clips of an 0’06-‘12 997 with bolt right up on a 996. And you can do that little project for a good bit less than buying a similar- mileage , 3-4 year newer 997. Yes, the 997 is a tad wider in the rear with aesthetic improvements, more power, better handling/braking but not by a TON.. Especially if you find an X50 optioned 996 with 50 more HP.,. But most important thing is full documentation on service up to date, no previous collisions - ignore CarFax it’s a scam. Feel panel edges for tape lines/irregularities in smoothness of panels are all the edges. , Look carefully everywhere for overspray or changes in natural orange peel. If something is missing, just know it could cost you. I’m Sure there’s more but those are my thoughts. We’re in a perfect time relation for these cars to be affordable enough to buy a lower mileage example and use it as daily transportation and not feel bad about it. 911 MSRP for 996’s was $115k bade. 911 MSRP’s for a 2020 911 is $245k. The new ones are a lot more. But the price over 18 years for new ones almost DOUBLED. That’s insane. What’d you rather have, a 2017 Shelby GT350 with 25/30k miles or a low mileage 02 997 Twin Turbo Porsche - instant classic? Considering the even even the lesser powered 996 Turbo (415 hp without X50 pkg which is worth 44 extra hp - 460hp), the car weighs in at 3,300 lbs, which is less than my 70 Cuda. So my wife’s 996 red other way will be able to beat both my built 600hp 6,500 lb. Ram SRT-10, as well as my stroked small block, with all the tricks that duno’d NA at 520hp/540 two. In a 3,800-3,900 lb restomod Cuda. I’ve dropped $21k price + $10k accessories and a $20k performance rebuild on the Ram since I got it in 2014 ( can’t predict if a trucks gonna trash two bearings/journals) total $50k. And let’s just say I’ve got a few nickles unfer $100k in the Cuda. But my wife’s grocery getter is gonna whip my butt I’m a heads up race? THAT SUCKS! But z a Porsche’s rule. I’m gonna have to supercharge the Cuda, no way around it.

other then it will depreciation for being one of the "most hated" 911 it's actually one of the best ever built way over-engineered for what it gives. like the comment above me, they are good for 850 don't recommend it if you want to stay reliable they only problem they have is what was mentioned its "ugly" and has a bad clutch system. but the clutch system can be fixed I think he's gonna do it as it not hard what so ever. And if you ask me it's actually quite pretty and unique. and it's in my top 3 of favorite Porsche's. my top 3 are 964, 914, 996

Nononono... you bought the correct body-style. 911s need to be coupes ... otherwise you lose that gorgeous, iconic backside and rear three-quarter-view. And 911 turbo-convertibles are just plain wrong, anyway. They look silly and are, IMO, pointless. If all you want to do is drive around with the top down, why would you need all that extra horsepower? Basically, the 911 proves the old Top Gear rule of convertible cars: Buy the one that was designed to be a convertible from the start ... not the one that started life as a coupe and then had its roof chopped off. Besides that... the 996 is pretty ugly, yes. Unless it's a 996 turbo or a 4S. Those two look rather good. All I would do is get rid of those old-man wooden parts on the interior. Man, I can almost picture the kind of guy who would order crappy parts like that on his 911.

It really comes down to the headlights. If it bothers people that much, buy the lens covers. It's about $175 "fix"
