I had one of these in 2013 when I did a temporary remote job assignment in the Mid West of the USA . Loved it and ran it year round . Added 4 snow tires for the winter . Felt as if I had cat claws on the winter roads. The only issue for winter was the poor clearance and anything more that a three hour drive was uncomfortable . Nevertheless, the safety factor and control was amazing, One night returning after a late night flight , I had encountered freezing rain on the interstate alone, dark and no traffic . I had to suddenly stop to avoid a coyote. We had a moment , the animal glaring at the headlights and I at him. He almost nodded and implied...OK you can pass. Made it home safely. 😅

Generally I agree with you here Doug but then I thought of a car (granted from 1994-1996) that still, to this day, has one of my all-time favorite interior designs; the 4th-generation Honda Prelude! That was an interior design so far ahead of its time that I actually think it still looks ultra-modern and beautiful even today in 2023! Btw, you should absolutely review a 4th-gen Prelude VTEC on the channel if you can ever manage to find a rare clean and un-modified one!

Doug this is another great video. The 996 Turbo X50 has 1) Synchro problems when downshifting downhill the manual transmission slips out of 2nd gear. Also 2) the clutch slave accumulator fails in many 996 Turbos for no reason. 3) The water cooling lines deteriorate and leak causing some 996 Turbos to overheat the rear wing hydraulics and finally, 4) They burn a lot of oil with white smoke when the fittings pop out.

"Normies"??? Normies are not people who would pay thousands more for a car with conventional 911 headlights! Doug is spot on. This car is spot on, and the only Porsche I'm truly interested (in part because my budget for another toy is guided by whether or not divorce is a viable option; it isn't). 0-60 in 3.7!? A manual transmission? Truly great looks and a rear set that folds down like it's an SUV?! Superior handling for track days? And somebody is fretting over headlight design? Shut up! I mean, really, Shut up!

I took your advice and just bought a 2001 911 Turbo hardtop, 6spd with 20,000 miles. Paid $63k. A bit more than I wanted to spend, but I've noticed that since I first watched your video the prices are increasing. I had tried to buy one with 55,000 miles on it for mid $50's, but it sold before I could get deposit down. Then this one popped up. I see convertibles with automatics are still $45k-55k. But I wanted the hardtop. These things are wicked fast. The torque band is insane, and consistent in 4th and 5th gear, especially 4000-6000rpm. Thanks for posting this video!

I actually always liked the design of the 996. I was a teenager when it came out and remember all the auto magazines losing it over how Porsche ruined the 911 and how it would be a blemish on their history. Personally, I always thought that the headlights looked like some sort of glass sculpture. Iv always had a bigger issue with the break lights.

Commented elsewhere before, but yet another good vid. A fab looking Turbo 996. I had a new 997 Carrera S but some how it lacked old Porsche look and lacking in character. Oddly my left leg when in the cruise felt squeezed inwards from the left slightly - RHD. I went for the 996 Turbo and it certainly feels more solid, more positive to drive and very comfortable, has more of the old Porsche character. I love the awesome Le mans racing style lights etc. Way ahead of it's time, also the great Mezger engine power haus. The 996 Turbo is the real deal urban icon - Timeless unique beautiful clean design. I could have gone for a new series but the new ones can look to gimmicky and Bat Girl a bit like the new Astons nowdays just too "kit car". The 996 Turbo genius design of the best of the old and the new was way ahead of it's time. The Turbo 996 is a real deal street true urban Icon, a work of art and no I wouldn't let go if offered over 100k, because I still enjoy the car just so much.

7:32 "And from there, moving on to some other exterior quirks- " I don't know why that sound amuses me so much, but it does! This car is kind of the epitome of early 2000s cool... So of course the Porsche snobs hate it. Of the very few I've seen up close, most are Turbo models, and most are one- or two-owner cars. The owners don't give a rip about the headlights, since you can't see them while driving, and a small car with plastic interior is very easy to keep clean. The only wild one I can think of is '71 Challenger blue and looks like a RUF... sort of.
