I got a 6 year old used 116i Performance Editon, the 2ltr. 3o,ooo miles from a BMW dealer in 2017 for about 8k. FBMWSH, 12 month warranty, fresh MOT and with a new set of 18" OEM alloy wheels. First car! Only serious issue was new drive shafts due to a corroded ring sensor at 59k miles. Currently on 7ok. It's nothing fancy, but I keep it clean and tidy as I can for a 12 year old car. Last year did a trip across Ireland, 45o miles out of one tank of petrol. Cracking.

I had a bmw 320i 2007 e91 estate in black automatic with the n43 b20a engine .bmw say that that was a problematic engine the n43 but all engines r problematic at one Pinot or another. It's interesting when these were first released in the early 2000s, they were considered ugly, with those banana side sills, unusual front and poor space utilisation, particularly in the rear seat area but it was the first low priced BMW and they sold well. The Bangle styling copped a lot of criticism but with all the comments made here, no one says anything about the styling and these days, along with the E60, it is considered cool and almost modern. I think it now looks better than a lot of more modern cars. It was a good drive too......
