I find it astonishing that people will buy a fairly new, expensive, quality car for say £20k, and then skimp on a £300 service. I just don't get it. I've had loads of older cars over the years and even when they are worth peanuts, I would never not get it serviced exactly on time. Why do people do it?

They may have maintained it themselves, possibly rather than probably! I do my own servicing, partly to save some money, that's how it started, but mainly because I have trust issues having seen some of the stunts many garages put, I also then know it's done properly with quality parts. Obviously can be a problem come sale time but I'm aiming to keep my current car for ever so not a problem.

Engine and gearbox mounts lasted for 14 years (you should find out how long a motor mount lasts on other cars and you will see that 14 years is very good), brake lines and stinking aircon got to that state because the car lived in a wet area, it was probably parked near the sea and it's completely normal for a 14 years old car...

My C220 CDi Estate (14 reg, black) has done 215000 miles and still drives like new, just passed another MOT no advisories. Very quiet, fast enough, 55MPG on a run.

Bought a 2014 one a year ago. Deliberately chose the older model c220 AMG sport estate because I preferred it. So far really pleased. Smooth and nicely planted on the road. Much prefer the interior and controls to newer cars (I hate cars with everything controlled by a tablet screen thing stuck on your dashboard). Engines a bit noisy when cold but on the move fine. Very comfy on a long journey and fuel efficient for quite a biggish lump.

i've have the 2012 estate 220cdi amg sports plus version owned since nearly new at 5k miles , and now 135k miles up. Apart from usual consumables, all i have every had to replace is the clock spring on steering wheel @ 90k miles and water pump @125k miles. g/box serviced every 40-50k miles and i've latterly increased engine oil change intervals to every 5k-8k miles and the engine still runs as sweet as a nut (55 -60mpg on a run) . As an fyi merc have a recall for the possible rust in the rear sub frame which they will replace FOC if rust found ..mine is ok so far. Bottom line for me is the utility value is worth far more than what i could get if i sold it , and im looking forward to running it for another 100k miles

Had my 2008 c200 for 10 YEARS!!!! Still drives great and very reliable. Mine is the older OM646 engine with duplex timing chain. 204k and should be good galactic miles. Great video Matt!

Yes Australia doesn't even allow used Japanese imports. Horses for courses, UK has mostly manual and diesel, its rare to see petrols. They adopted the French approach as a result the air is heavily polluted. UK still doesn't have a good selection of Japanese imports or grey imports

Hi Matt great video as usual, different car I know but I’ve recently bought an Lexus NX it’s 8 years old with 77k on the clock…..I booked it into Derby Lexus and asked for a full service and a gearbox service…. The very professional chap then asked if I watch “Matt from High Peak as more people are asking for a gear box service” 😂 I said I did and he agreed to throw in a free gearbox service! Result! I just bought a 2012 R Class here in Canada - a true 7-seater station wagon (estate) with less than 60k miles on the clock powered by a 3.5-liter diesel and in as new condition for $15k (Canadian). I don't think this model was ever sold in Europe and it was never a massive success in North America where the market is either minivans (Honda Odyssey and Toyota) or SUVs. The Merc sits somewhere in the middle. Like a minivan, it has seven seats, with the third row actually being comfortable and usable. Like an SUV it has 4WD and can actually be lifted on rough terrain. Its luggage capacity with seven seats in use is a little limited, but for our family of five plus a dog it is the perfect vehicle. 30 miles to the gallon on the highway, which is amazing for such a large and heavy car. Very happy with it.

​@@Sha-AyoI had a lexus is220d. Without exaggerating it was one of the worst cars ever that I owned. Thought they looked nice and was encouraged by the brand reputation but it was just shocking. Was lexus's first attempt at a diesel i think and it was an epic fail. The petrol version was incredibly thirsty and the performance was some way off the equivalent BMW. They must have upped their game because my friend bought an is300h which was beautiful, smooth, economical, stylish and bullet proof. Maybe il go back to lexus one day but just my thoughts

I would totally agree with the brake pipes as I had the same problem on my W204, and it hadn't shown on the MOT, but a Mercedes specialist told me. Also, the subframe is a known issue on the W204 for corrosion. Nice cars though

I run a 2009 C220CDI AMG sport estate. It has the maple wood interior like this one. Wheels were refurbished too. Only difference mine has the optional sat nav that folds out of the dash. Great car and i too sold mine to the first viewer last week.

I've had one of these for 10 years, but with the V6 engine. A lot smoother than the 4-cyls and will still do 50mpg without trying too hard. Big enough carry a wardrobe, but not tank-like to drive at all. Rear tyres don't last long, wish mine had 17-inch rather than 18-inch wheels. I only got 10K from the current Continentals and I'm a sensible driver. Avoid solid red (Diablo red?) on Mercs of this era, there's a manufacturing fault that makes the lacquer peel off. Doesn't affect any other colours And I spent ages waiting for a red C350CDI to show up in Autotrader. Such is life.

That era I think had corrosion problems with brake lines, fuel lines & subframes. I had to get those sorted on my 2005 SLK. Apparently a known problem.

I have one of these in white, it's a 3 litre diesel and i have owned it for about 4 year's no problem's. Love the styling and has aged really well. There's not many around Marple so you may see it knocking about. Great reviews love the channel 👍

I've got a 2014 C Class saloon Matt and really like it. Mine was bought new by someone who cheaped out with the accessories catalogue, but I still love it. Yes, the 2.1 is a little agricultural and my 136 bhp version does this thing in "sport" mode where it just makes more noise without any perceived performance increase 😂. But that engine is fitted to the Vento van and as such is very durable. You made me really anxious when you pressed the tailgate release as that wall looked awfully close 😬. But it looks a nice example. Privacy glass is nice to see as is the dog guard for your XL Bully 😉. In conclusion then, quite an outlay for the profit BUT another very nice car for the buyer with a potential 100,000 miles more life in it if they look after it. P.s. I also get the gearbox service done on time. It's not cheap but the cost of a reconditioned gearbox is a lot more.

Nice buy! I own a ‘08 s204. I love it and drive it for 6 years now. The rear subrame can be a problem on these cars. They will rust from the inside out and break. Mercedes replaced the rear subrame on my car under warranty when it was 11 or 12 years old! Als check the brake lines under the subrame, they will also rust..

My company got me a 2014 EClass 2.1 diesel a couple of months ago after my Nissan Jukes's cvt gearbox let go after 168000 miles. Its on 132000 miles, and i hate noisy cars but for some reason i dont mind it in the merc, once you move off it fades way. What i like is there is no difference in cabin noise between 60mph and 85mph. Plenty of power for normal use, 40mpg urban and 50 motorway @70mph. A 2016 ulez one is still £16000 +.

All of those issues, i've had with my 08 C200cdi on 175k miles. Coil springs, rear light plastic, seat cover, ball joints. Common issues. Also ive had a water pump go (no cambelt so not serviced on interval), body module (reset) and the keys play up. I dont skimp on my tyres like this, Michelin Climate Controls last forever and give these grip in the snow. Engines are more bombproof than expected.

I managed to pick up a 2009 c250 CGI (1.8L turbo petrol) last year for £3750. It’s a fantastic car and because it’s Blue Efficiency It’s also pretty good on fuel. It’s very refined and comfortable and it’s turned out to be a great small family car.

I like these mercs, I have one 140k on it. Solid cars if you look after them. Mine is now at an age/mileage where I'm getting things done to it regularly but I do drive about 400 miles every week in it. Last 2 years - Brake line burst, got new line, discs, pads, several oil changes, 2 or 3 suspension arms replaced, Back plate replaced, new tires 3 times, exhaust clamp replaced, Air con pressure sensor replaced, re gassed...

Good watch again Matt. However, at 17:09 I am perhaps in the minority. I traded in my 2019 530d a couple of months ago that I had had serviced at BMW, left Michelins all round that had done 5,000 since replacing them and wanted for nothing, but, I deliberately left about 20 miles of diesel in it. My view is that if I’m offering a car thats been well looked after why should I give away half a tank of fuel as well? Particularly given the cost of fuel at present. 😂👍

My dad owns a 2017 Audi S8 Plus that has the full rear seat package (rear massaging ventilated memory seats as well as rear screens) and on one side the menu button sometimes gets stuck. My dad asked to get that repaired thinking it was gonna be 5 bucks for a plastic button. Nope, Audi wants 800 euros to replace the entire control unit… Needless to say, that button still sometimes gets stuck because no way he’s paying 800 bucks for that.

Kwik Fit / Halfords tier MOT jobsworths - Advisories for minor or irrelevant back seat problem due to car seat being fitted, but can't spot corroded brake lines. Tremendous.
