Nice to see someone on a similar boat as me. Though I think I have you beat 😂 Bought a 2011 535i for $2200. 130k miles, tranny was bad. The oil-water heat exchanger burst and they kept trying to drive the car with the tranny slipping (water/coolant was emulsified in tranny oil) until of course all the clutches got nice and smooth. If I got any tips for anyone: if a Haitian is selling you a car, RUN. 90% of the times it's borderline destroyed. To say that the person that worked on the car didn't know anything about mechanics, is an understatement. Everywhere I looked, missing bolts, cross threaded bolts. After taking the tranny out I noticed engine mounts were shot so it was a no brainier to just finish pulling the engine out. Glad I did. Engine mounts brackets were held in by a total of 2 out of 6 original screws. Valve cover had 3 broken screws which I had to remove and thread chase. Exhaust manifold was missing 4 nuts, and I could see by the amount of soot around it that it was leaking from that area. Both the engine wiring harnesses were super damaged, I don't think there's a single connector that still clicks into place so I'm gonna have to ziptie everything in place lol. Some frayed wires as well which I repaired. At this point I have zero trust in anything on this car so I'm ohming every single pin and torquing every damn bolt per the manual. It's wild to me dude, like I have zero issues with people working on their own cars. But it is beyond my as to why they don't bother to do it correctly. They literally had the waste gate solenoid disconnected from the vacuum on the valve cover, so the turbo was literally always bypassed. Vacuum lines broken all over the place. It's crazy that the engine even ran. It misfired a bit in idle like struggled to maintain constant rpms but all cylinders were firing for sure. So pulled the engine out and gonna do oil pan gasket, and while I'm doing oil pan I'm gonna put ACL racing conrod bearings with the extra clearance so I can run slightly thicker oil, cause pretty much all of these N55 engines fail in the same way w/spun rod bearings. Mine didn't look bad but like I really don't want to take half the car apart again lol. Also front and rear mains. On the bright side, the interior is in super good condition. The driver seat looks like it'll probably need upholstery soon but otherwise it's 9/10.
@ShawnzeyRacing10 ай бұрын
That sounds rough! hopefully when I start pulling this motor I don't run into to much trouble like your situation.
@0000000554710 ай бұрын
@@ShawnzeyRacing Honestly it's a lot of time and frustration, but as an aerospace engineer myself I kind of enjoy the thrill of having to take everything apart and put it back together (correctly this time 😂) Also this being the first non Japanese or American car I've had, I know they're considered pretty complicated to work on. But all in all I think it's probably the best crash course that I could've gotten for a BMW lol cause by the time I finish, I'll be able to see a bolt and tell you exactly where it should go and depending on when that is I might remember the torque specs too haha. Just finished doing the rod bearings and oil pan gasket today and put the engine back together. Hopefully next week I can have the engine and trans back in the car.

The best bit is I said this to the parts guy at my BMW dealership when doing suspension bushings - and he laughed and agreed. Don't skimp out, a lot of problems can be avoided by maintaining the car.
