I BOUGHT A DESTROYED Pontiac Aztek That We DRUG Out Of A BARN

I bought the car the internet loves to hate, a 2004 Pontiac Aztek. A barn find Aztek is a pretty weird thing but it's exactly what this is, the old owner drove it as his fishing truck for years, tearing up and down dirt roads with the windows down and then parking it when the transmission stopped working correctly. Eric and I drove 6 hours to pull it out of the barn, cut the stuck emergency brake cable, and drive it on the trailer for the trip home. This is going to be a huge/fun project as we tear this Sport Recreational Vehicle Apart and learn everything there is to know about it. Also the Aztek is and has always been AWESOME!

So awesome to see it saved. My husband got ours as a "yard find," it's a Steel Blue 2001 GT that sat in a lady's yard for 8 years. A new fuel pump, tires and brakes and it has been our daily driver for over 3 years with very few problems, can't wait to see what you do with it.

Someday I'd love to see you restore a Studebaker Avanti. I have a friend who restored a rusted out Lark in his parents backyard when he was 17. He ended up entering it at shows and winning some awards. He's in his late 60's now and you remind me a lot of him when he was your age. I can't understand why someone would neglect a car so much while driving it for so many miles. "People are Strange" Never had a problem with its front, actually found it innovative & the best front of GM's twins. The rear was far more tolerable on the Rendezvous. It was its rear that I thought was hideous (& the overuse of the unpainted cladding). Once body-color matched, most of the problem goes away. Glad it's on the channel!

Had several of these Azteks and a video here on KZbin of when I owned 3 at once, still own one to this day. The first year Aztek was the most optioned, heads up display, some with leather seats, Versatrak, air ride suspension, Pioneer stereo, heated seats, wiper mounted spray nozzles, sunroof, additional grab bars, drivers information center, steering wheel controls for the radio, engine oil cooler, and much more. Can say from experience that these 3400 engines are notorious for blowing gaskets. Not just the intake but the head and timing cover too. A coolant system pressure test will show any leaks quickly. Even though the Aztek got a lot of hate for the way it looks, many of the new SUV / SRV look much like them. It was just ahead of its time. VT247

2002 2003 hard to remember but I was 20ish and was invited to go test these out before being unveiled. Went down to Atlanta motor speedway for it. Was super cool I took a good friend and we drove down from Tennessee. I thought the cooler console was awesome.

A former co-worker owned one of these for many years. He aptly named it "The Ugly Car". I gotta agree that the best interior feature of this era Pontiac is the red dashboard illumination. I also liked that when I had to replace the fan speed control, the OEM part was only $16 at the dealer. It ate fuel pumps, though.

On the LCD screen on the radio, a lot of those have a ribbon connector that gets dirty/corroded, a lot of times you can disassemble it clean it and bring it back. Very cool that you bought the camping package to go with it!

I actually loved this car. Was one of the first if not first real crossover vehicles. Had a ton of options and features, tent and mattress, center console/ice chest, pioneer sound system with rear controls and all wheel drive. A GT luxury model also!

I remember seeing the Aztek concept at the Detroit Auto Show, in '98 I think. Two years later the production model appeared at the show, retaining little of the shape that made the concept attractive. I overheard one of the "spokesmodels" describing the infamous tent accessory to a visitor. Another visitor taking a long look at the front end asked, "will you be offering a tent to cover the front end too?" I could not contain my laughter. True story.

I bought a Maple red 2002 new from the lot. This was the most practical car ever wish I still had it. Never had a problem with it and would get 20-25mpg. The back seats are removable and my model had Stereo controls in the rear hatch on the drivers side so you can sit on tailgate and tune stereo and raise lower volume from the back. Also you may want to find the sliding cargo tray it was my favorite feature of all it was removable as well. I still have the Factory optioned Air mattress for the Aztek as well. My wife and I had an ‘02. The sifter solenoid went out and it had to have a intake manifold gasket. Other than that it was ok. One neat feature was the rear spoiler. If you have a full-size truck or SUV tailgating you in the dark, it blocks most of their headlights so you don’t get blinded.

That Versatrak system was full time all wheel drive, not driver selected. I owned a 2001 and when I bought it, people would comment on the ugliness and I would say you can't see it when in the driver's seat. It actually had some nice features, as the cooler mentioned, along with a head-up display, radio controls at the rear hatch for tailgating, sliding storage that doubled as a table when extended from the rear and also was removable. Mine had the cladding which was maligned by the public, but was great for rock hits and door dings, as it didn't chip or deform as painted sheet metal does when hit. It could have used a better engine as the 3.4L was a derivation of their 2,8L engines in the X platform (Citation, Phoenix, Skylark) from the early 80's.

I had an '01 GT in red with crazy seat pattern. I had the sun roof and rear stereo controls but no compressor. I loved that thing. The only things that I had problems with were water pumps (4) going out and the AC condenser cracking/breaking at a factory mount (the replacements only have 3 holes instead of 4). She got rear ended and totaled due to the lack of parts,

So stoked! We had a black OG Aztek bought new in 2001 that did almost 250k before we traded it in 2019 at the same dealer we got it from. Lots of awesome road trips including Route 66 from IL to Grand Canyon, Albuquerque with photo stops at many breaking bad sites, all over Colorado, Florida, and smokey mountains! We did not have the tent but it works fantastic to car camp with the tailgate down and lid up with just a tarp/bungie. Ours was super clean and actually in pretty good shape when we parted ways. The 5 spoke 17" alloys were better than the tri-flakes imho.

I am going to thoroughly love watching you work on the Aztek!! I had a 2003 that was taxi cab yellow. I could literally park that car anywhere in a parking lot and pay no mind as to where I left it but could always find it because of the color!!! I loved the car but people hated it. I traded it in for a Honda Element (yes, another strange car) so my son could move back and forth from college. The Aztek had the sloped cargo area while the Element was a box. Instead of 2 trips to move back it took only one with the Element. Those are 2 cars that have been discontinued now. I now drive a Subaru Forester Touring - waiting on that to be discontinued also!!!

So pumped for this series! I had a 2004 w/ the heads up display in college (about 7 yrs ago). Awesome cars but watch out for the Notorious awful head gaskets, the 3400 was the downfall with this. Also, make sure your cooling fans are kicking on at idle. Traffic jams & drive thrus were always nerve-racking. I ended up putting in a manual override switch the fans, since the computer had a mind of its own.

The C7 Corvette makes sense now. C6 looks awesome. C8 looks awesome. C7 looks like it was designed by the guy who designed the Aztek. Damn, it really was.
