Put that engine stand different way. You should attach flathead at exhausports. If you don't break bellhousing that will crack somewhere another place.

I took my first one apart at my grandfathers shop. It was a 60 horse with a broken crank. Looks like you are doing some mining.

It's always fun to jump in head first and learn something new. That's how I learned most everything I know about cars and engines. This was all back before the internet and KZbin video's.. One bit of advice. Never touch a rusty nut or bolt before spraying it with penetrating oil and letting it sit for at least 2 hrs. The best I've used is a mixture of acetone and ATF in a small pump sprayer..

Thanks for the vids I’m working on pulling the motor out of my 46 ford never worked on a flathead before what all was holding the transmission on beside the bell housing bolts I pulled the small cover off the top all I could see was a small spring

Yes,I commented before that it was a46-48... wrong,as I just saw newer video showing the hand crank pulley on the crank,that of course is a '41 like you say or older.

Just happened upon your channel and I think you are gonna have some fun with the flathead. There are lots of great resources here like Zak and others. If I may, I think your channel would be a great interest to others like you and I, that would love to rebuild their own Flathead but, fear is holding them back. I'd be very interested in your journey with this crusty flathead. I would be especially interested if you were to make it as detailed as possible, your oops and awes and lots of technical detail as you work through the project. I have my name in for a nice block at a yard that has a ton of parts and as soon as the guy gets to my 'order' I'm sure he'll find me a great candidate - my only provisos are that it has a complete and free rotating assembly and the block has no cracks through the valve seats - redoing the valve seats is bloody expensive and only a good machine shop can do a proper job. Most of my mechanical chops is with Twin Cam Harley and Evo Sportster so, lot's of knowledge transfer... meh, not likely! Have fun, I'm following!

As was mentioned already. You need to purchase a side mount engine holder. You have way too much weight hanging on the bell housing. Plus you can not remove the clutch and flywheel.

yup, agreed. I have a 2x4 to help support the engine for now but will look into a side mount once I know I can get the manifold and key parts off :) Thanks for the tip!

If you have a good block, crankshaft and rods you made money on the deal. In a hot rod build just about every thing else gets replaced.

A mix of trans fluid and Marvel's works great. I have a seized up flathead that I just soaked for a week or so and now it rotates over great and the rings have that sound of cylinder seal I'm about to get it fired up and see

I had to replace a cracked head on Edna's flathead. Broke a stud off in the block, spent the next 3 weeks trying to get it out thinking I'd ruined the engine the whole time. Sickening feeling. Finally got it out but been afraid to touch the engine since

Not yet, going to take it apart first. Do a visual inspection for cracks then get it magnafluxed and hope for the good news

Hummm, I'd dunk that thing into a 45 gal plastic barrel with water and baking soda, plug it to a battery charger and let it cook outside of course for a week or two. LOL Seen this before, who knows? at least the rust will be chewed up by the electrolysis process. Seriously, I'll be watching for the outcome.

lol... that would technically work and might have to do something that extreme. The next video I plan to try and take the oil pan and intake off and then let it sit with rust remover on each end for a few days. Then try to take the engine completely apart. Thanks for sticking around!

The guy who sold it to me was honest about it and since I paid the money he should have no shame… I agreed to it. The motor may only be worth $50 but I certainly can’t find a “complete” engine for $50 anywhere local. I’m still confident I can get my moneys worth… but time will tell! @@calirodYou do have to be patient and not hang around the hot rod crowd but just old dudes with old cars. Just look at the prices on the HAMB! I got three engines and all the accessories with two cranks that had been machined(one is a Merc) for $200 as I was helping clean out a shop. Another like that with all accessories for $200. To me all the parts on it help a lot for your future decisions(exhaust, ignition, brackets, etc). After a few years, if you are “out there” they find you. I actually have many more than I will ever likely use. Keep at it.

the head needs some WD40 around the plugs, let sit overnight and work out the next day..

Correct, I let all the threads soak in penetrating oil and only had trouble with one plug but I think an extractor can get that off if I ever need to use the stock heads.

Why is every other video out on restoration or working on old machines, engine bikes, trucks, etc they just go brute force! little wd40 or some blaster oil penetrator can really help and is not crazy expensive under $10 bucks wtf. Stop using brute force

hmmmm... well not sure when I used brute force in this video however I did in PART 2 :) even after using penetrating oil... that is usually an aid but not a solution. Also it happens to all of us, you start off playing nice and as certain things do not work you try new things and slowly use more force. I am sure you have experienced that subtle feeling of impatience when working on something old and rusted as your hands are all greasy, tools are gunked up etc etc :)
