You know me, every two to three years I buy a Volvo 240. This one here is called Fererro: golden exterior, brown inside, FIVE SPEED MANUAL transmission. 😃

My neighbor is a retired school teacher and she purchased an almost identical vehicle in 1989 when she retired. The only difference is hers is an automatic. It comes out of the garage every Wednesday for her hair appointment and shopping trip and every Sunday for church and Sunday School. It's in near-mint condition and has yet to turn a hundred thousand miles. She turns down offers to buy it all the time and she's worried that when she passes away her great nephew will get it because he has expressed his desire to LS swap it!

I think old Volvo's are a mental illness of some sort...I bought a 1980 245 on a whim a couple years ago and now I'm obsessed. Only a matter of time until I buy a second.

The two-setting comment on the heating is very true. Mine has it too. My 1990 240 GLT is my first car and am still driving it in Europe. While living in the States, I drove 4 780 bertones from Santa Ana, Portland and Seattle coast to coast to New York, so this video brought happy memories.

These were the best made Volvos back in the day. I may have commented before on another video but I don’t remember. So my grandparents both had Volvo 240 series cars. One was a sedan maroon exterior with brown interior and the 2 door Volvo 242 Silver exterior with dark blue interior. Both those cars were awesome. And my aunt a 240 Wagon.

I put 200,000 + miles on my 1988 5 speed manual. Couple of things that cause problems in mine, one must clean oil breather filter or it will leak oil, two one problem that cause it to stop is a circuit in the in cabin computer, when it stills, just pull the carpet back on the passenger side and unplug computer and then replug it in, third I thought the a/c was weak in the south. I could not kill mine, I tired. I drove it in 5th gear at red line for hours on end and it never missed a beat. Our vacations with the 4 people was at 115 mph. Unusually 600 to 700 miles per day. Before anyone says it was not design for this speed,, first three years we live in Europe and it was made for speed.

Drove a gold brick hand-me-down in high school (probably 76 or ‘77). Stick shift and sunroof. Such a great car. Dad got rid of it when 3 of the engine mounts broke. Still miss it. Just got a V90 Cross Country wagon that is definitely a partial nostalgia purchase.

I'm guessing you know about late 80s M47s in that a 10w/30 or 40 overfilled by a couple of quarts seems to keep them sweet. Surprisingly decent mileage. I thought all 240s are poor. B21A 245 with M400 (very early) didn't do much more than 21mpg (US). That was even after a new fuel needle.

The special engine sound is beacause that engine has skeleton pistons, aluminium pistons with steelinserts that was supposed to seal better when they came up to temperature. I think they only used them in 87-88 engines. Like someone else commented it is piston slap but it is controlled piston slap from factory😂. Fredrik from Sweden or volvo land🙂

Cold engine piston slap and valve train with hard or failed hushers. Have serviced the rear wheel hubs including. 1991 end of dash speaker grill. By 2023, the rear brake drum pads are delaminating.; You will want to consider and rear wheel hub grease repack. NLGI 2 Silicon SuperLube grease for hinges and latches. Or white lithium spray. Not all dash lights work on instrument cluster before engine start. Definitely a piston slap and that noise diminishes as engine warms as you know. Brake fluid is old and not clear. Motive brake fluid flush new DOT4. The top hot out radiator hose may want a trim. The motor mounts / transmission mount appear about past the mid duty cycle: rearward sga not so bad. The strut mount (Volvo PN 1272455 not made by Boge or SKF anymore with ball bearing races under them dust caps. Oil pressure switch wire. You'll want to reset the t-belt tension several times after install as they have an initial stretch. You know about the preheater flappy valve getting stuck to all hot preheated air. Thankfully, no EGR. New alternator? FPR appears original. That is a cherry 240 you have there. Gold or Champagne?

I remember fondly that our neighbor got a new Volvo, the first with the big tail lights, I loved that car, it was maroon with all equipment available in our country at the time. I was maybe 10 or 11 at the time but that car has stuck with me into adulthood............. edit: And btw. in my country(which is not Sweden) the toasty setting on HVAC setting was most used, and was greatly loved when the weather got under 0 deg in the winter........

Really great videos about these beautiful Volvos! I was also considering getting one of these beauties but i was wondering some things. First can you fold down the back sits on these sedans? Second can you modify the newer squared headlight model to mount the older bigger model grill and round headlights? Thanks a lot for the answer in case.

I’ve kept my Volvo 855 petrol Estate purchased new in 1994 as a keeper. You’ll know that the 140 and 240’s weaknesses distance and experience are hidden rust traps. In Sweden both were nicknamed‘Swedish Tractors.” Try driving 800 miles here in a race between an ICE DIESEL and Porsche Taycan E.V. Watch precisely that race here from N.Scotland to Lands End in England on Geoff buys Cars KZbin Channel. 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇸

I’ll start with the 3M medium polish compound and a low-speed rotary polisher (which has a few colours of foam pad for each respective compound). Then a fine glaze before the final polish. I expect some of the paint will come off (whatever is already sun-baked) and a nice patina Will be the result. If too much paint comes off, I will use less abraisive compounds, so as to prioritise colour over smoothness. And a hand wax to seal it all up
