Great that you are restoring a classic Volvo but converting it to electric is absolute sacrilege. They are rare enough as it is so PLEASE NO, it should have the original 3 litre engine PETROL engine.

Nice work David. I'm jealous. For a number of reasons. 1. I'm nearly 70 yo and I no longer have the determination of youth to tackle a big project. 2. I have a '91 240 GLE sedan that would be ideal to convert to electric. (I will be studying your process closely) 3. I nearly bought a 164 about 25 years ago. I didn't. Much regret. 4. Wrecking yards. You have yards where you can pick your parts. Not where I live. 5. You are very clued up on electrics. I am a dolt. Anyway, if I get a few other tasks finished I will consider myself lucky to be able to work on my 940 GL wagon and the 240. You must be balancing work and the ev conversion which is a task in itself and I admire the way you are handling that balance.

@@mayflowerlash11 thank you very much. It’s been so difficult to balance this with everyday life and general career ambitions. That’s partly why this has taken nearly three years to finish 🙃 I appreciate your support and viewership

Stunning job! What a beautiful car! I was lucky enough to have owned a pristine 1971 Volvo 122S B20 with twin SU carbs as a mere 20-year old in South Africa back in 1974. Had to sell it three years later as my new bride at 5' 4" just could not see over the dashboard when driving! 😉 Still in love with the car 50 years later. I'd give away all my wedding photographs if I could have my car back today! 😂 What wonderful cars they were!

First and foremost, nice build! ... but one word of caution when using an AVC2. It blindly enables the j-1772 power without consideration of how much power is available in comparison to how much power you're taking with the charger. Let me try to explain in this comment. Let's say that j-1772 power supply is from a source that's set to only provide 3.3kW (80% x 240V x 20A). like in my case with my build I have a 6.6kW charger so if I would use the AVC2 it would just blindly turn on the power source meanwhile my charger would ramp up an overload the source thus at the very least blowing the circuit breaker⚡🤯 So in short be aware that you may overload the j-1772 source unknowingly and overload its circuit breaker. To avoid the situation you would have to manually verify that the supply power is greater than your charger power at every location you choose to plug it in at. In my opinion as an Electrical Engineer I don't recommend using an AVC2 for a customer use install. There are more complex solutions that cost more money that communicate between the j-1772 signal line and charger how much power is available and ask the charger to lower its power. I personally use an Arduino with CAN bus and custom code that communicates with a j-1772 and my charger to properly set the max power. I plan on making this available to others as an open source project but I won't be able to release more information until I get around to writing some documentation. for those that I would release a video on my channel if and when I release it.

Why would you ruin a perfectly good ICE car to turn it into a glorified golf cart?
@thechadwick2213 күн бұрын
It's a Volvo from the 70's, not a Ferrari. Why let a perfectly good chassis get scrapped when you can electrify it and keep it on the road for another 20 years and not have to buy gasoline? What a low effort post.

Not all 6.5"s will fit without modification. I just put some cheap, 6.5" Kenwoods in my '91 244. They are a shallow depth, but I had to dremel the speaker cutouts in the doorcard, as the speaker basket was too wide to go in all the way. Easy enough though, the 240 doorcards appear to be a very thin MDF type of wood, and it doesn't take long at all to enlarge them with a 60 grit sanding drum or rasp attachment. Oh yeah, couldn't get my dikes to bite well enough on the rivets to snap them off...ended up just drilling. Hit them with an auto center punch first to keep the drill bit from walking around.
