Love the 9f, always makes me laugh when some one claims a bunch of gears and springs in an automatic has more 'soul' than a quartz crystal we dig up from the ground that vibrates.
@edwardcatt2399 Жыл бұрын
I believe that GS actually develop or ‘grow’ their own quartz crystal but you’re correct, the perception that quartz is somehow less ‘artisanal’ than automatic is absurd and . . . though I’d never deny that automatic watches are absolute marvels of old world engineering craftsmanship, the fact that this is the sole thing that ensures their value in the modern marketplace since the advent of quartz and the debut of the Seiko Quartz Astron 35SQ (the same year that Doraemon made his debut I believe), is total nuts!

Bruce, the beauty of our hobby is recognising and appreciating all movements. I started out looking down my nose a little at anything that wasn't automatic or mechanical, but once you open your eyes to top end quartz and the quality thats put into the dials, case designs, and accuracy you cant help but recognize how amazing the likes of high beat GS, Cartier, Citizen 0100 movement (mind blowing)and the likes of F.P.Journe are just truly game changing. Great vid. 👍🍷

Great vid Bruce, GS is a player in the watch game and in some regard, still slept on by many. GS has become my favorite watch brand, right next to Omega. Their watches give you so much for the money as compared to others of the same price point. To me, their biggest drawback is their clasps. With their engineering prowess, a quick adjust should be child's play.

The regular champagne quartz 44gs has been on my list for several years. An exhibition case back would put it over the top. And I agree a screw down crown would be a very nice addition , like the spring drive and automatics. It Has never made sense to me the set and forget quartz doesn’t get one.

That blue dial is stunning! I only buy black dials but damn...that thing is a beauty. I personally don't like screw-down crows...they are a pain and cause unnecessary wear on a watch that most will only go swimming with. Now a dive watch, a screw-down is a must!!

Some models do have lumed hands but I much prefer these beautifully crafted hands. For me lume just ruins the contour and I totally don't need it.
@klauskreiter7395 Жыл бұрын
I agree that most GS are somewhat too thick and in stainless steel rather head heavy. But not the Sea of Clouds/Unkai with 10,7 mm and well 130 g on my wrist making it just perfect.
@Ae073001 Жыл бұрын
The sports models have lume, but the more elegant models forgo the lume as it takes away from that elegance. As far as thickness, their older quartz are 11mm and under for the most part and their newer spring drive and automatics are slimmer. The great thing about GS though is on paper a watch may seem thick, but man...when you put them on, they don't wear thick. GS, like reg Seiko's have a great ergo designs that really fit a wrist well. Just have to see and try them in person.

The 9F is my grail movement. I have an interest in quartz, even if 99.999% of quartz are mass produced and "not special", I still see them as what they are, the objectively best watch movements out there (and then you can argue what's best out of battery (9F), solar (cal.0100) or spring drive (9R) after that). And thus I appreciate that we at all have some high level versions of them that can command (at least to me) a similar kind of admiration as a well crafted mechanical movement do.

I have an 017 and love it. Had it on a light grey suede strap (feather light) all winter and am about to switch back to the bracelet. Accuracy is closer to 0-2 spy than 5. I agree on the screw down crown, I'd prefer it, but I'm not wearing this kayaking or to the beach, so I can live with it. Probably my "prettiest" watch and it actually gets noticed by people / has a little bling to it.

I like when the seconds hand is more prominent with an arrow or triangle or some kind of pip for legibility and preciseness; that would be- inserted chef's kiss- just a magical thing to see on their spring drive or these incredibly precise quartz movements. The thing that would keep me from buying used GS or indeed paying thousands for GS is that those noticeable hairlines are likely to take away the enjoyment of a key selling point of the watch in very little time of wear. That seems like such a risk when buying polished perfection when not also specifically hardened for regular use over time. Does that make dressy GS watches more like home museum pieces? I fear that is the case, so even if I wanted to spend big money on one, I think I might ultimately always decide it's not worth it. That said, this does apply to virtually all watches above a certain price point to me. I generally wnmabt all my watches to be daily wearers and I don't want daily wear and tear to be too strongly associated with a loss of enjoyment or monetary value.
