I just turned 100k on my '18 S5 and it's been absolutely bulletproof, but then I stay on top of maintenance and change the oil every 5k with Liquimoly. I've driven it from the West Coast to Denver and back 5 times, including the southern route and a blizzard in Santa Fe, and it's been great. Also have a B8.5 with just over 100k and it's been bulletproof as well, again because of maintenance. Also, if you have a B9, do yourself a favor and pick up a transmission pan and some ZF8. Audi says lifetime fill, ZF told me around 65k to 70k and I followed their advice. It's a bit of a pain, you need to pull the transmission mount frame and support the rear at the driveshaft flange, but the peace of mind is worth the effort...and you can pop in an 034 insert at the same time. The only issue I've had on the B9 is the rockers, had them replaced at about 60k because one had failed. Turns out there's a center pin hardening issue, at least on mine, in some of the production run. Don't know who makes the rockers, but I have 40k on the new set and they seem fine. I also don't know if I have the rockers with the big rollers or the original small needles, again if I have to replace them it'll be a good opportunity to refresh everything else. The only thing I dislike about the car is the cupholders....whoever decided that was a good place for them should have to clean every MMI that has a spill on it.

Was it covered under warranty? How much did it run you? What symptoms did the car exhibit?
@Steve_with_coffee Жыл бұрын
@@ProgTrance Yep, warranty covered it, and the car started sounding like it had a collapsed lifter or wildly out of adjustment valves for those of us who know what sounds like in an air cooled VW to Porsche. The noise was constant and got louder with throttle, or on overrun. Seems to just have been the early production cars, and I was lucky to have only one fail. I took it apart and found the center pin had been worn down incredibly, so some poorly hardened pieces got through QC. Important to mention is that I bought the extended warranty when I bought the car and the failure happened later to me than others, at 65,000 miles. I attribute the delayed problem to using Liqui Moly 5w30, changing it every 5k and changing it immediately after dealer service, and my service guy thinks that's why it didn't fail sooner, too. Seems not many are happy with the 0w20.

@@Steve_with_coffee I was snooping on free Carfax reports on 2018 SQ5s as I also have one. Of the 30 or so Carfax reports I looked at, one that was sold in mid 2017, had 10k oil changes, had its long block replaced at 99k miles. I can only assume it was due to rockers as it was an early built car. Mine is mid 2018 date, with 95k miles, I also have an extended warranty for 2.5 more years left on it, so I’m not super worried, but it’s always in the back of my mind as a slight worry, otherwise I absolutely love the B9 SQ5!

Enjoyed video, live in New England. Sold new and CPO Audis in 2017. Run used car lot now. Liked the transparency. Liked the comparisons between Audi generations, and the fact you had a BMW and went back. B9 out of my price range (S4 in general) so used A4 on my radar.

So one thing about your video is that this is a daily driver (pragmatic sports sedan.) Unlike others who have multiple sports cars /sedans, or older B5/6/7 and are wrenching them regularly, this is a different take. I had always wanted B5 but not being a mechanic maybe 2010+ A4 while slowly adding features. Being in the car industry can keep eyes open for good deals. The idea others mentioned of having a video of maintenance costs on a more modern Audi would be interesting.
@BrandonFinleyx Жыл бұрын
@@brg1708 I'd be happy to make a maintenance cost video! If you're going to go for an A4 2013+ is what I recommend to get around the piston ring/oil consumption issues of the first generation of the B8. The B9 A4's are a great platform as well!
@brg1708 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Thanks for advice. Again, your video turned my long time thinking on its head. Wait longer, get newer. I have heard of the 2010 oil consumption /valves issues. Maybe waiting for the 13+ is better, especially if I can get a warranty. I am 55 so having to have "side project" wouldn't be practical as I am also trying to save for other things. In addition, my I have a commute, which an A4 would make more enjoyable, and the horsepower would be more than enough, even compared with older S4s. I come from a problem free '06 Toyota Highlander, which is soon to be paid off. Before I had two vehicles in 3 years that I had to repair regularly, so the peace of mind is worth it. But my credit is better so maybe I can pull it off. I am frugal so the struggle is real, but you only live once. Look foward to new videos. The maintenance/cost video would be good, how you found trusted mechanics and compare / contrast to other cars you have had would be interesting. I should add, when I sold Audis in 2017 I LOVED the A4( cabin, features, drive, everything)and I got to drive most of the vehicles except the R8. I am 6' 3" 270lbs with long legs so I am not interested in small vehicles.

Timing chain would be my biggest concern. Make sure yo see how much timing it's pulling every so often. Unfortunately, these engines are kind of backwards. So, the timing chain faces the firewall. So the engine needs to be dropped in order to replace. They are great cars as long as you maintain them properly. Which most people don't and then those people bitch about reliability when they are bad car owners

After I got rid of mine, MANY 2018s and 2019s in the community had catastrophic failure. It's a tossup, because by 148k miles, it should've blown, and if it hasn't that may be a good sign.
