I've owned my Audi S5 over the past 3 years and I'm going to share the REAL cost of owning this car. It may shock you. We will cover the monthly maintenance costs, fuel costs, insurance costs, car payments, and depreciation costs associated with running such a refined German sports coupe. For reference, this is a 2018 Audi S5. However, your costs will be similar if you own a newer model vehicle. Unlike other reviewers, this is my experience with this car over the years rather than spending a day or two with a car.

I can save you some time if you come for maintenance costs. My average is 10.8 US cents per mile with this Audi S5. In 2022, AAA said the average vehicle owner will spend 9.83 cents per mile on maintenance. Please like the video and leave a comment if this info is useful :)

Nice video! I think something that would be really helpful on maintenance is one level deeper in terms of detail. The total of "$3k over 3 years" gives us a little bit of color. But if you just flashed the spreadsheet or a summary text of things you had done in each year of ownership, whether you got it done at an Audi dealership or at a local indy mechanic, etc. would be reallyinteresting. Eg. 30k, 40k, 50k, 60k, 70k, 80k maintenance, having only owned it for 3 years, did you do all of these (and if so, how much were each of them?) When and how much was it to replace brakes (pads and/or rotors)? Oil changes? Any other misc things that broke (eg. the Thermostat / Water Pumps on the B9 Audis are a common issue as they get a bit older). Especially now that your Audi is out of warranty (eg. 4 yrs / 50k), would be really useful info. Still a nice video though!

I own a 2018 Audi S4 (B9) Prestige with the sport diff that I bought new. Over 60,000 miles, the only unscheduled service was repairing a bent wheel that fell victim to a winter pothole. That was with my aftermarket 18” winter wheel and tire setup. The trip computer shows a lifetime average fuel consumption of 31 mpg, but it’s a bit optimistic and probably reflects 29-30 mpg measured at the tank. As a “retired” motorcycle road racer I love driving fast, but only under suitable conditions that are rare in the real world. So far, I’m very satisfied with this car. Quite different from my previous B8 S4 that I was lucky to trade in at a good price when the DSG started to get wonky. Replacing that would have been financially ruinous. The ZF in the new car is a bit less fun but very reliable. I prepaid for scheduled maintenance till now but that’s over so future service will be done by a local certified shop and not a dealership.

I just got rid of my Audi 2018 Q5, which I bought new. I honestly really liked and enjoyed the car, but I had nothing but issues with it. Especially out of warranty. I owned a decent amount of new and used cars and never had as many problems as I had with my Audi. They were stupid problems too, like window actuator, leaking oil pan, bushings (twice), motor mounts, dead control module, etc... I bought the car new in 2017 had it for just under 7 years, it was paid off as well. I work from home so didn't drive much, I had just about 48k miles when traded it in. I decided to trade it in when I brought it in for an oil change and they told me I need motor mounts, bushings, brakes (wear and tear, don't really count it), but it was about $3500 in work. On top of the $3k I spent fixing a dead control module and another $2k in leaking oil pan, and bushings. I looked up the car and it was only valued at $20k, I decided I wasn't going to put another $3500 into it and instead by a new car (not an Audi). Like I said, I really enjoyed the car, especially the digital dash, which was new with this car and one of the reasons I bought it. I hated to have to buy a new car, but couldn't put any more money into it. It was my first Audi. Not sure if I will buy an Audi brand car again, but if I do it will most likely not be new and have the extended warranty (certified used).

I financed from the start my 17 Audi Q7 at a high interest rate because I wanted lower payments (because it was a preowned unit w/48K kms - I know it sounds I'm on the losing end. But the way I seeit. I win because I've done every single timely maintenance service (oil changes half the recommendations by Audi, coils, sparks, brakes, pulley belt, rear differential fluid and engine mounts) - I didn't cheap out on parts, made sure all OEM parts that are less expensive (at distributors price) than the dealership (except the engine mounts which I had no choice but to purchase from the dealership with a discount. The only labour I ever paid for was to fluid exchange for transmission and for the engine mounts replacement because it was breaking down and a lil' sumthin-sumthin' to enhance it for better drivability ;) - THAT'S IT! Currently running past 134K kms.My point is, anyone can acquire to drive ANY Audi. You just have to learn how to loan and manage debt. If anyone is ever thinking about driving an Audi and owning it past warranty, be agressive on maintenance schedule and be a DIYer. If you don't, do not buy one because then you'll just be complaining and bashing the brand.

If I replaced my whole suspension you're looking at $4k. I ended up going with KW coilovers and doing a mag ride delete. It cost me around 3k because I changed all the mounts both front and rear. The coilovers alone was $2,500. I have changed the PCV valve for about $70. Did DSG, Haldex and front/ rear diff services. It cost about $600. Sparkplugs are aroung $60.

Sooo question is for me, I found a 2018 Audi S5 sport back with a 107xxx miles on it for 21k. Looks mint, hasn’t been in an accident and has only one previous owner. I guess it’s hard to say whether it’s worth it or not without knowing the full background. But assuming everything’s been done, how long should it last, and how reliable is it?

I'm not a mechanic but I'm rolling up to 93,000 miles at this point without anything major occurring. I planned on owning the car to at least the 160k mark and reassess. I think you can get another 100k miles out of your purchase. But to be fair, my play would be to save up an extra 4-5 grand and you can find S5s with a fraction of that mileage and have a bit more peace of mind.

@carsofmedicine
@carsofmedicine 6 ай бұрын
This always brings up a huge discussion on the Audi subreddit and forums. To my knowledge, Audi recommends an oil change once every 12 months or every 10,000 *miles*, translating to 16,000 kilometers of driving. This is what I do and what the Audi dealership recommended. Some online swear by an oil change every 5,000 miles (8,000 km). There is a service manual that you can reference for your specific engine/model year.

I'm a bit confused. The maintenance is scheduled on a 10,000miles/one year interval. For your mileage I was expecting at least 6-7 services done to it... some of them are significant in price. Did you actually have them done? Here's why I ask... Most people that complain about reliability on german cars are often 2nd, 3rd, 4th owners(to avoid depreciation)... They end up sometimes paying for an expensive failure that could be prevented with the required maintenance. In my opinion these cars have a decent amount of performance and cannot be compared with something like an intentionally detuned lexus(in the same price range) that's super reliable no matter what. Also these cars are also abused more often than a something like a lexus...
@carsofmedicine
@carsofmedicine 18 күн бұрын
So you're confused because you think I should've spent more on maintenance? I take the car directly to the Audi dealership, which already charges a premium on maintenance, and I follow their maintenance schedule and recommendations. The car is now at 92,000 miles. I have not had any complaints about my car's maintenance. But each dealership/region in the USA will have different rates, and something like an RS model may have higher prices than a base A or Q. I've also noticed prices have increased on service when I go in today than when I paid them three years ago.
@-.__.__.-Rad
@-.__.__.-Rad 18 күн бұрын
@@carsofmedicine No friend, I do not want you to spend more money than you intend. I am trying to let you know the complete maintenance for your Audi S5 2018 V6 with the ZF8, is every 10K and it varies by age. Some services are minor, some are not.. Some are just oil change, some are spark plugs, transmission flush, brake fluid... If you chose to take it in less often, that's fine - its your choice, but that's not an accurate description of the maintenance cost. You take the car directly to audi dealer.... Great, how often did you request for the respective mileage/age service to be performed? Just because you asked for an oil change every 10k does not mean that's all the maintenance To give you some perspective.... If you read some forums for audi/vw a lot of people that intent to keep the car for a longer time follow that interval correctly. Some change the oil every 5k(myself included). So the fact that "you" did not have any complaints about your car's maintenance, does not mean you did the correct maintenance. Next owner for your car, might pay double because of this. Enjoy your low maintenance S5, but also warn the next owner if you're not trading

German engineering is incredible, the issue is modern cars are made with planned obsolescence in mind and are built with all sorts of cost cutting- go back to the 90s or earlier and you can see people running over a mercedes with a monster truck or detonating a stick of dynamite under the hood and the car still works

Also nobody stares at a Toyota or admires it. You don’t feel anything driving a Toyota.

@@iniester6724 they only sell premium audi models here where in europe you can find models with base engines configured. similar with mercedes and bmw. they just dont sell the lower trims here so those brands carry more weight in brand image

If you where aiming for arrogance in your comments about being able to afford an Audi or not, you got there in spades! My parents taught me good character, morals and etiquette.

I'm unsure what comment triggered you, but there is no arrogance here. It is just a car. Step back from the keyboard a bit.

Hey man, I worked my $8/hour retail & food jobs followed by $12/hour ambulance shifts before graduate school. My first real job had a base salary of $92,500 but I worked well over their hourly requirement. I now am 5 years into my career, negotiated higher rates, and have a couple side hustles to make it work. I acknowledge it's not a typical individual salary.

Super meaningful video man. Great to see someone making content that resonates perfectly with someone that may be looking to get a new or used performance Audi.
