I Bought a Hovercraft & It Was an Epic Fail

Tag along as I buy a 1987 SCAT Hovercraft that ends up flying off the trailer, almost sinking and breaking a ton of parts in a matter of a week.

Your video brought back a slew of memories, I got paid to endure all of that and more when I was SCAT's test pilot during development of the SCAT II. Broken belts, exploding blades, broken steering cables, hull bottoms coming off during flight... good times.

Also brought back a load of memories for me. I used to manufacture the wire dome guards back in the late 80's. I still have the original plans and remember clearly some guys coming over from Scat in America to visit our wireworks firm in England. The guard looks exactly the same in the video and if that's one of the original's then I guess they've lasted well :)

Once you catch the Hoverbug you may never fully be able to rid yourself of it and it is true the Hovercraft community has always been filled with some of the most down to earth, Helpful sometimes a bit eccentric personalities. Before you know it you may find yourself ordering plans and build a craft from the ground up (I built 2 in the last 30 years since going to my first Troy OH, Hoverrally at age 15 - HOA member since 1991 things were much more active back then, but it is nice to see some general public interest again). Will probably start posting my hovercraft adventures again (didn't like any of the video footage I have gotten recently and I really need to just start a new channel for it)

Hi PJ, the dreaded fan belt... hmmmm, I went through 2 belts before I managed to get my belt tension correct... all revs - no-go or lift. Pleased you got a hover tho, unfortunately, it is addictive, like a drug... you can’t get enough of it,, especially sideways at full throttle... Enjoy yours...

No. In their time, Scat were awesome. IMO It's more than 3 decades later and the design works but is obsolete. Features I would look for: 1. At least one horsepower (combined) per three pounds of max gross weight. Battery and Electric start. 2. Braking system (thrust reverser, either fully reversable steering or reversible pitch) 3. Independent lift power ( either secondary blower(s) or selectable full flow diverter) 4. USCG Marine safety compliance for power vessels (hovercraft nav lights, signal system, vehicle flotation, emergency gear) 5. Dual propulsion ducted fan thrusters plus forward lateral thrusters or vectored thrusters 6. Effective hold down cleats 7. Essential instruments on IP, including fuel status, battery status, engine hours, engine rpm, nav compass, gps

I actually found one just like this on Facebook marketplace for $500 and I just had to put it back together with the handlebars and what not, messaged the guy and he told me that it had been on there for a while and he threw it away. I’m so bummed, what’s the odds I’ll come across another affordable one in Maryland. Was going to accomplish one of my dreams. Bummer

hovercrafts are piece of junks except the big commercial one that cost millions. most inefficent way to have fun. engine dont last and a gas guzzer.and too much noisy for the speed you get. have fun.

SCATs were made in the 80's. More of those were produced than any other personal hovercraft. The technology has dramatically improved from 40 years ago. There's just so many of those darn things around people think they represent all hovercraft and they don't.
