I would have laughed. That electric plane is hilarious! And hope you can return it to it's true form. I can't wait to see the planes at work.

At last, somebody who thought it was funny, thank you! :)

The router plane (old woman's tooth) which you said had no blades, may be designed for use with the chisels. The metal guide is for marking dovetails. The drill bits need a brace. I believe washita oil stones are quite highly prized.
@buildingladygarnetАй бұрын
Thank you! I shall try that out with the chisels and see if that works. I've looked into Washita oil stones, and they have a good enough reputation that I will try using it... as I said in the video, I much prefer diamond stones to oilstones, but perhaps I wasn't using a high enough quality oilstone at college.

Re Routledge Tools of Birmingham. They were active in the late 1800s and seem to have made many types of woodworking tools. My father trained as a cabinet maker and managed to obtain many old (even then in the 1940s) tools most of which I still have including one identical to your first tool. I also have a very battered 1909 Routledge catalog. I'm afraid to try and scan it as the paper is crumbling.
@buildingladygarnetАй бұрын
Thanks for the comment, that's very helpful! I might browse around online for catalogues, there's bound to be quite a few on InternetArchive and other places. I'm quickly getting the impression that looking in old tool catalogues is a good way to date tools.

Boatbuilding college sounds like a great thing to do, there can’t be many of those about where did you go?
@buildingladygarnetАй бұрын
It was excellent! I went to IBTC Lowestoft. There are a few options - in addition to Lowestoft, there is the Boatbuilding Academy in Lyme Regis, Falmouth Marine School, and the Maritime Training Academy in Surrey. I know very little about the last two. I did look into going to Lyme Regis, but I preferred the course structure at Lowestoft.

The mystery item looked like for marking out dovetails?
@buildingladygarnetАй бұрын
Jake, thank you for the suggestion, I think you might be right! I've examined the tool several times since filming, and dovetails are the only thing I've been able to think of.

It’s a dovetail gage

the other mystery item from the parsnip box looks like it may be a tent peg 😆

Could the mystery tool be some sort of gouge for turning? I've only seen rounded ones before but I suppose you could have one with a sharp angle like that...

The shooting plane would have been used on a shooting board and used to plane end grain
@buildingladygarnetАй бұрын
I must admit, thinking back, I actually used a shooting plane several times at boatbuilding college but have not touched one since, neither of the yards I worked at had one!

Lovely haul. Do you like parsnips? I have been chasing old tools for a long time, ended up with rather too many. Still, it does mean I have a very nice box of favourites!
@buildingladygarnetАй бұрын
Oh, I can already tell that I shall have to be quite stern with myself about buying up lots of vintage tools! And actually, I don't really like parsnips, which is why I'm glad that box was filled with chisels instead! :)
@BrownianMotionPictureАй бұрын
@@buildingladygarnet I think you have to be fed them growing up, as those who were not don't seem to get it! Parsnips I mean, not chisels.. Really looking forward to the build!

@@buildingladygarnet If the opportunity comes to fruition, I'd still love to help out. My friend has just forged some lovely caulking irons. Did I mention I love tools?
@buildingladygarnetАй бұрын
Definitely! I've got a little list (like Ko-Ko in the Mikado) of good people like yourself who have expressed interest in volunteering. I will be starting work at the beginning of January, but the first few things, more related to setting up the workshop and doing the lofting, I won't really need much help. But once that's done, and I get on to making the keel, stempost, sternpost, etc. (in other words, the actual boatbuilding!), I will be putting out a call for help!
