A Bristol boy, the home of BBC wildlife. I think you are doing the right thing, concentrating on the skills and gear of the film industry. My Nikon gave up the ghost after doing a video shoot in 4K. So, its convinced me to just stay use video cameras for what they're designed for.

Still waiting to see some content with the new setup 😁 I’m an hour or so west of you, as I drive to work there’s a siege of Grey Herons in a field about 50m from a road. I’ve seen as many as 14 there, and regularly 8/9. Good practice for the 100-400 with a 2x crop.

Very impressive kit combo with goosebump inducing presets. Must be still in the high cardiac bpm mode when negotiating it all in the field - imagine the day it's the norm. Made up for you Matt. Every morning must be like Xmas morning right now. Do you still have run and gun options? Here's to a brighter '22. Si.

Congrats on the new setup Matt, it's funny how we are almost in sync with our decision with the Z CAM. I did notice you saw my Owl footage I posted in the FB group. You captured a stunning reel, I particular loved the frost! I must admit bit jealous over the pull focus system, I'm still using my fingers on lens 😂... Looking forward to seeing your work with the new camera, also try give zlog a go once you feel comfortable with the setup, it's great to get into colour grading.
@MattGouldphotography3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Sam! Yeah man cracking job with that for sure! There is definitely nothing wrong with fingers and thumbs but I couldn't resist the focus wheel I have to say :D. Z Cam have a rec 709 profile specifically for their Z Log which looks great but I don't know if my PC Can handle it. And I only have on 256gb card at the moment. But will defo explore that in the future.
@samuelhornemedia3 жыл бұрын
@@MattGouldphotography Thanks a lot bud, it was pretty breath taking experience! And pulling focus is bit awkward so hopefully going to loan out the Uni stores Small Rig one as I used it for a boxing match was super helpful! And I think I need to look into the Rec709 profile, I'm currently using the Zlog plugin which I guess might be the same thing haha. The CFast cards are pricey 😅, I'm making do with a 2TB SanDisk Extreme Pro, shooting ProRes LT, it takes up a lot of space 😬.

Wow, impressive! Just binged through abt two years worth of your work, and I really admire how much fun you and your friends have on your shoots. I am "new" to WL photography, but not new to the industry. I am just now beginning to be able to afford the gear I need to make the shots. I have felt like gear has been the one thing holding me back, but from your videos I've seen, you don't need a super long lens to get started. Your macro shots, for instance, are beautiful. Really great work, and thanks for the work you do. Keep it up!!

Did not see that coming. So processing the digital film is the same or is it a PC killer because of the amount of data. I find for filming now that the camera has been upgraded but that's had a nock on effect with everything else. PC is slightly warm after. Can't wait for more instalments particularly as the warmer temps have had quite a few animals about early. Snow drops carpeting everywhere and caterpillars regularly basking on the walls at mid day. Could be a good year for bugs 😁
@MattGouldphotography3 жыл бұрын
Yeah perhaps a bit of a twist 😁. I have issues with editing them it has to be said due to the big 4k files but that says more about my pc than anything. I'm filming a lot over the next two weeks so fingers crossed i get some good results 😁👍

Sorry to see you had to sell the 500mm but interested to see how you go with this new journey/equipment. I'm interested that you chose the E2 (global shutter?) over the E2-M4 or E2-S6. I am in a similar place to you but reluctant to give up my stills gear. I feel I'm best served with hybrid bodies. But maybe I'm missing something, I don't know. I'd like to know from you why you feel the codecs are better? Is it an industry requirement? What are the deliverables when selling these clips? Perhaps a some ideas for a future video - I'll be keeping an eye on your channel to see what you get up to. Good luck!

We also have the Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 IS L lens. While the Mk II (and the RF equivalent) have slightly faster auto-focus and better image stabilisation, that clearly doesn't matter for your rig. It's built like a tank, and the Canon L-series glass is superb!
@MattGouldphotography3 жыл бұрын
It is a great lens that I have owned for some time to be fair. The two more modern options are also great as you say but it cant be beaten on a budget, especially second hand :). Glad you like the look of the rig and thanks for watching :)

I personally look forward to your film whenever you post them as I have always enjoyed them and think that your level is already very high. I cant wait to see what the new kit brings to you and wish you all the good luck. I have one question around the 3:50 mark the image has a very narrow depth of field focus, was this done intently or from choice or a product of the new gear combo? As always I really do like the stuff you put out, even the "Hey look I got new gear today" the joy that come across is really cool. I wish you well and look forward to seeing new films from you. never stop going after your dreams

Congrats on your new camera, Matt! Modular design for degree of future-proof usage, growth potential, too. Wise choice. Not something to strap on your chest for a POV, I suppose😁. Am confident you have hit the ground running - akin to avian take-off, sortta. As I recall from prior vids you would often lay prone on the ground to get the shots/footage. Will you be able to comfortably do the same with this rig? Look forward to the results. Cheers!
@MattGouldphotography3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Paul! Getting a POV shot of this sounds like a great challenge to be fair :D. Thats a good question and observation for sure. I can get very low with it, but not as low as I used to. Due to the balancing of the weight it wouldnt really be safe to do so. Though I will endeavour to find clever little ways to get low :D.

M43 makes a lot of sense @ 800mm (for stills I've got an older lens with 2x converter to make 800mm on M43 -- didn't break the bank, doesn't break my back)
@MattGouldphotography3 жыл бұрын
Glad you agree Tom! I have invested in a 1.4x teleconverter if I really need it but I am hoping that 800mm will be enough for most scenarios.
@JjackVideo3 жыл бұрын
I know this is a bit late to the party, but you should really look at the Sigma FP camera. You can shoot cineDNG and take stills out of your raw videos. I hated having to choose between video and photos and missed some great shots of both in between, so I was a game changer for me. But be aware of the HUUUGE file size. Good luck my dude
@faerphoto3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt. Very interesting setup. The footage looked great, and I think you're right that this will help proprel you forward. So, now that you've released this video, I'll go ahead and ask my queation. Will you use this 100-400 for stills, or will you still buy some other lens for stills to replace the 500? You had said you weren't giving up the stills camera or still photography, so I'm curious what you'll use for a lens for that piece. I can picture situations where you might want to have both cameras with you, but with the setup process on this one, I can't imagine trying to use one lens for both. Just curious. Looking forward to future videos. Cheers from Maine, USA. :) Paula
@MattGouldphotography3 жыл бұрын
Good evening Paula! Well, I plan to use that for stills for now but will definitely be looking to replace my super telephoto at some point! However there may be a little surprise regarding that in one of my future uploads, you will just have to keep an eye out ;). I am planning to vlog with my gopro's as I take photos, then return on separate days to capture appropriate footage to go alongside if that makes sense. So really you shouldn't see much of this setup now :). Hope that answers your question and thank you for watching!

Is the speed booster just an adaptor, or does it affect other stuff?
@MattGouldphotography3 жыл бұрын
It does indeed do other stuff. A speed booster improves the amount of light getting to the sensor by about a stop and reduces the focal length. :)
