I just got my first Gibson Les Paul standard 50’s gold top last week. I am like you man, grew up beyond poor and started playing in 1997 when I was 11 and have worked my hind end off to get to where I am now. I understand the feeling being able to get your hands on things that only felt like a dream when you were younger. Congratulations man! I actually just switched over to Gibson altogether, I’ve played Martin and Gretsch for years but now own a vintage Gibson jumbo and then sold my Gretsch Broadkaster and bought the 50’s Gold Top standard.

I literally bought the same guitar in '20, LP Standard 60s Bourbon burst that was only 5 months old and used so I saved quite a bit of money too. It was totally mint with all the plastic still on it. I don't like the kidney Grovers either so I switched them out for locking gold Gotohs with keystone tips, Gohtoh bridge and tailpeice too. Swapped out the pups for Duncan Pearly Gates and I defy anyone to show me a better playing or sounding guitar.

I too have a 60s Standard Bourbon burst...but mine is lefthanded. Just like you did, I am about to put on locking tuners. But other than that, it is the perfect guitar in my opinion. I don't have tuning issues with this one like I did with a late 90s LP I used to have and the Tribute I also have right now. Though, I put a String Butler on my Tribute and that pretty much fixed the issue I was having. ...Imo, if Gibson put PRS style headstocks (3 on a side with teh strings going straight to pegs with no angle) on their LPs, they would have the ultimate, perfect and unbeatable guitar..

The thing about Gibsons is that they are unique.. they all sound different, so its tricky for ppl that are used to superstrats with high output pickups to find a nice tone for metal because Gibsons have that growl and bite that is perfect with low/mid gain amps like Marshalls..if you dial in too much gain it gets muddy and you lose definition... if you listen to guys like Zakk and Sykes they don't really dial in a lot of gain, their tones are really mid gain but they track multiple guitars to have that huge wall of sound.
@aureliusandthespiral
@aureliusandthespiral Жыл бұрын
True. But, an eq pedal or a different bridge pu make it easier to personally standardize a 'tone'. Personally, I really like the variables and uniqness of Gibson's. You are right on that they are all a bit off from one another.

“Zakk and Sykes is mid-gain” in what universe?? Zakk usually does the 666 EQ and kicks in a SD-1 with both Drive and Level on 6. That is really gainy. The 2203 is not gainy at all. And Sykes’ best tone was in Whitesnake 87 with a Boogie. Also this guitar thickness argument is complete BS like most things the guitar community regurgitates m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGGVpXyjmMpmd6c
@guitarlair
@guitarlair Жыл бұрын
@@plugnplaybaby have you ever played a JCM800? The amp is not gainy AT ALL. that's why he kicks in the SD-1 with the drive at 2 o clock, it does not give him a heavy metal tone, it gives his tone more body... just listen to the isolate tracks of no more tears on youtube and tell me if that is high gain.. In regards of Sykes, he tracks multiple guitars, always has.. he even had issues with producers in the Whitesnake's 87 album because of that.. there's multiple videos about that on youtube, don't be lazy and look it up.

Last week I ordered a new Gibson Les Paul Slash Standard in November Burst, I’m not a slash fanboy but I was when I was a kid, plus I got a killer deal on it. I remember playing my first Gibson Les Paul Standard at guitar center in 2008 and dreaming of owning one but thinking I’d never be able to afford it. @@DavidDurham-sn4yk While almost every high end guitar manufacturer uses synthetic versions at some point, you are certainly getting real MOP when you buy a Custom. As far a pcb electronics, only certain years and models have them. Some may say they are better, but regardless Gibson have gone back to their original, handwired harness formula. I will say their prices though have gone up, so owning a newer, high end model is not for the budget minded guitarist. Plenty of deals on the used market. But regardless, a Custom will cost you.

Stock pickups definitely don't go past like modern rock gain very well but I still think they sound amazing as hell! Something about the vintage tone/texture of them feels real good. It literally looks like a brand new guitar with of course the binding aging. Original Tim Shaws and the old Gibson chainsaw case. Couldn’t believe this find. Hang tags and manual still in the case. My point to this is, it’s the only LP I’ve ever purchased because I’m just not a fan and won’t ever be. This guitar was just an investment for me. Plays great and is definitely full sounding. I'm more into 80s metal, thrash and punk, so i can get reaaally good tones with the Iconic and Marshall plus a couple pedals (Revv G2, SD1 and MXR Badass Distortion). Also, you gotta adjust the pickups to dial in your tone. Especially if you're planning on very "niche" metal and high gain, as opposed to typical classic rock.

Heritage makes a better instrument for a little less money and their headstock design leads to better tuning stability. Gibson is owned by a Private Equity Group now (KKR) that doesn't have a good rep in re to their ownership style, and their marketing re the re-issue Falcon Amps is downright deceptive. Despite all the noise they've been making there are still way too many instances of poor quality control being reported, imo.

I get using heavier strings if you're solely a rhythm player, but I have to say I do love swapping out my high e from a 9 to an 8. That extra loose vibrato and easy bends for days is what playing lead is about for me! I do like a 46 on the bottom though, especially for gallop picking. Too thin a string on the bottom can trip you up

I was looking for a comment like this, heavier strings are fine if you only play rhythm, but you're literally fighting against yourself if you play heavier strings as a lead player.

I bought a Standard 60’s in late 2020 I think. Looked, sounded, and felt really good. I went to the guitar store yesterday and played 3 different Standard 60’s in diff finishes and the guitars just felt cheaper and didnt sound as good as the one I bought in 2020. I was gonna consider a trade in for the new ones but quickly got my answer NOT to. I cant help but wonder if they're making them cheaper and selling them for MORE!?! Shouldn't they be progressing? Obviously just my opinion but what areothers thinking about the newest models over the last year or so?

Congratulations on your new Gibson I owned an 82 les paul custom which was extremely heavy 11 and 1/2 lb and I eventually sold it and now I only play Jackson Guitars with overwound alnico 5 humbuckers. They are light they sound great they are 25 and a half inch scale and yes I do use nines on them which sound great in my opinion. I do customize all my guitars for me much like you do as any guitar player should. I will look up your band I think you are a great player good chops that only comes with practice. 👍

I have a 2021 Gibson 50s lp standard, woodfeel and tone is great but the pickups need changed out. It would be great if you’re looking for that 1960s Clapton vibe. So I’m hunting for a good set of pickups myself

I’ve played a 20 yr old Sg (got new back in early/mid 2000’s, for a gift/1st brand name guitar, got very lucky. Has 60. Neck 490r/498t, the grain of wood and feel and sound is great! Love it). ; But seeing ive always loved LP’s & 20 yrs wirh my orginal axe, saw gibson went back to old school for new (2023 standards), i went for the 60s model burst, it looks great, feels good but different around heel lol), Big question is due to having spent a pretty $ on this brand new 60’s LP standard burst…im familar with 61 (or sny burstbuckers), i assumed the 490/498t was a very close model to the classic rock PAF

Les Pauls have a mahogany neck. Pretty much everything else has a maple neck. Mahogany necks have a lower resonant frequency and give a “warmer” tone. Tap the headstocks of both and you’ll hear the difference. Maple necks have a different decay and more sustain as well.

I have 4 new ones 2019-2021. A custom, modern and 2 standards. I hate those pickups in the 60s. Replaced them with Bareknuckle Painkillers. It’s a 2023 and already went to used?

Definitely a 10 to 46 gauge man myself although I originally used to use 11 to 52 on my LPs but overtime got slack and went 10 to 46s on my Fenders and Gibson's. I have never be happy with un-potted pickups as for 9 to 42 I am still trialing them on a recent Ibanez jem7 blue still not sure how I feel about the lighter guage yet for that guitar suspect I may end up for 10s for that too some one said Ibanez are better suited for 9 to 42 frankly I not sure if that correct or not. Thanks for that clip. OK a year has passed hows is the Gibson after this time?

I always have to throw in some hotter pickups. As a general rule with Gibson at least in the bridge, ohm the pickup that came in it and then multiply that by 2 and that's how hot the pickup you wanna replace it with should be.

One thing that makes the Les Paul so special is the fact that the bridge pickup Is closer to the bridge. That makes it sound tight and agressive! Not even epiphones copy this feature!

Beautiful top for a Gibson USA guitar. I’ve always been a Fender player most of my life and got hooked on Gibsons about a year ago. I went with a 50s standard. Very good guitar, but I did change the tuners. One kept intermittently slipping. Try the Kluson Revolution locking tuners if you like that look better. They are much better than the stock tuners. But congrats. My next Gibson is going to be a Custom Shop 61 SG VOS… it’ll also be my first ever custom shop guitar. Wish me luck in my hunt!

Nice! I just got my first single cut guitars today. I got a Schecter Solo II and a Fender JA-90 Telecaster, which are both based off of Les Pauls. All of my other guitars are super Strats. I'm really enjoying these 2 new ones though. The Tele is also my first experience with P-90 pickups. I'm really digging the sound of them.

I did not like LPs for years. Then about 3 months ago I walked into GC and they had a silver burst epiphone LP custom. And I had to try it because silver burst looks so good. And the neck on that guitar felt so nice. And I kinda got it. So now I'm thinking about one and swapping in a set of pick ups I really like and enjoying it. Or even just a prophecy model with the fishmans.

I did exactly this - have a silverburst Epi Custom and replaced the stock pickups w/ some custom orders from Sunbear Pickups (small maker out of the UK). Hand-wound pickups and a fresh set up for C standard tuning, and this thing is a fucking animal. Goes toe-to-toe with my LP Std and LP Studio. Love the LPs (and I'm LP too, so...)
