I bought a perfect gold coin, and then... what? I busted it out of its slab? I promised to leave it alone? You'll have to watch to see. Does grading modern bullion make any sense? People who have an easy platform to sell their graded coins will say it does, but I'm not so sure. There are positives, but I'd say there are a near equal number of cons. The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle from the US Mint makes a good case study for the topic. Cheers!

I bought a lot (to me) of collectable silver coins over the years, but trying to sell them is to hard. I don't want to ship them, cause mail gets lost a lot, scammers will say the box was empty, or it was a fake, and dealers mainly want bullion around here. So it's bullion for me, generic or government, and not graded, so all I have to worry about is spot.

There can be arguments for both sides. Graded modern bullion reduces the risk of buying fakes and they are preserved in the slab. I think they are easier to sell as well with NGC and PCGS backing (there are still fakes in the marketplace of slabbed bullion). On the flip side, graded coins take up alot more space and is just an extra fee if they are not already graded. I think your experience is also key. If your a novice, it might be better to buy graded coins if your not buying from a reputable dealer. If your an expert and know how to test, I can see why buying unslabbed would be better. It also comes down to are you a collector or a stacker? As a stacker, it would make more sense to try to buy raw as close to spot as possible.
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, buying from a reputable source cuts out a lot of the authenticity concerns. I wondered for a while if there wasn't a need for a lighter touch for verification (no grading). Cheers!

It's a common misunderstanding that '70' equates to 'perfect'. It doesn't.
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 2 жыл бұрын
You'll have to explain that one. The definition of ms-70 is a "perfect coin". I think everyone understands there is no such thing as perfect and they're looking under 5x magnification. There are also enhanced grades, but there shouldn't be any flaws on an MS-70.
@NefariousEnough
@NefariousEnough 2 жыл бұрын
@@2is1gold I'll have the pros at PCGS (search 'grading standards') tackle that one. In my experience, they're the best and most consistent. Once handled, a MS 70 coin is now an AU (about uncirculated) specimen which can reflect an order of magnitude in value depreciation depending on rarity and, as with anything, other factors.

Most local dealers that I have gone to tell me our premium graded coins are not going give you much over any other coins. So I said I’ll stay with bullion mostly. The only value is if you are giving it as a gift or hand it it down to loved one. I will pick it over non-graded for no more then 4% over spot and that is if it is low mintage or a special release. Collectors out there created coins are not much different only you’ve paid more to own one, you’ll get much better value from a bullion coin.

Wondering/ curious what a recession would do to gold? Should be your next video. Hearing we will be getting one soon. Does it drop/ crash? Or does it go sky high?
@edb3877
@edb3877 2 жыл бұрын
It probably does more than one of those things. First thing is that it would likely drop some as people are selling whatever they can to cover shorts or raise cash from something that is liquid but down less than their other assets. After that selling abates, it should begin to rise as more buyers come in looking for a safe haven asset to protect their wealth. If it gets really bad, then prices could rise substantially. But the thing about the future is that we not only do not know what it will be beforehand, we simply cannot know until it arrives and becomes the present. Because of this, I favor a well balanced portfolio of assets including stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, some real estate (but be very picky about when I buy it), utilities, divided-paying blue-chip stocks, and healthcare stocks / funds / ETFs. It is my belief that the entire world is awash in debt and because of that I refuse to own any bonds of any kind. They are guaranteed money-losers, IMO, and I don't want to have money in debt instruments when the debt house-of-cards collapses.

For me graded bullion coins does feel like a bit of a scam. Would you pay 3x, 4x more for a graded MS70 APMEX Gold Bar? Right, you wouldn't. So why pay that for a bullion coin? I can see grading for true numismatic coins where the value comes in the scarcity as well as condition. There is also the dealers who have professional graders on staff combing through coins, getting them slabbed in mass and the grading companies are happy to stamp it MS whatever because it keeps them in business. Really, 10,000 MS 70 coins are supposed to be special? So I guess my issue with any slabbed coin, or round is purely cynical. I do not expect a dealer to pay me for a slabbed coin for more than half of what I bough it for especially if you walk in with a MS70 GE and they have 6 in their display case. I'd be lucky to get spot for it. So if your thing is to collect slabbed MS70 coins have at it. Pay the price, enjoy your hobby. Just don't expect me to think that coin is any more valuable than a raw coin.
@2is1gold
@2is1gold 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you're into it, go for it. You listed a few of my gripes that I didn't mention. I know if I buy a raw version from a big dealer, it wouldn't grade out. If it would they would have sent it off knowing that someone out there will pay more for the good ones. That part rubs me wrong. Cheers!

For the most part, slabbed modern bullion coins doesn’t make sense to me, but if there’s a market for them, then it does make sense…it’s as simple as that. I do however, think the (somewhat) lower minted, collectible coins have a place in the slabbed world :)…as far as your UHR…being in a 70 slab, I’d keep it there because you’ll lose the premium you paid once it’s cracked out…not to mention the possible future premium it may gain. That being said, it’s your coin, so def do with it as you please. Thanks for the content and have a great day!

Trade ya! My shiny piece of yellow metal in the big box for your shiny piece of yellow metal in the much smaller plastic holder. I’m with you on preferring my coins to remain unslabbed but for some reason I would rather have this one and my 2016 Centennial gold coins to be slabbed. It’s probably because getting them out of their bulky display boxes is a pain. I prefer everything else to live in airtite tubes. I had a similar argument about whether or not to break a 1/10 gold panda out of it’s plastic mint-sealed package. I haven’t done it yet but it’s driving me nuts not having it in an airtite tube.

Slabbing bullion coins and paying ridiculous premiums for MS70 over MS69 is a fad. Here in Canada, it won't get you a penny more and when I buy a slabbed coin as part of a series that I am collecting, I break it out and put it in the same style of airtite as the other coins. Since I am not collecting AGE's, I do have a NGC slabbed 2006 4 coin set of MS70 AGE's that I keep intact, but I paid no more than raw bullion for it. It's frankly inconvenient and takes up too much space. I have a nearly complete date run of Gold Buffaloes and some were broken out of slabs. I try to collect MS70 coins, but I don't need a company to assure me.

@@2is1gold when I was new to collecting I made the mistake of buying Slabbed Silver Eagle Bullion coins and paid the extra. I wouldn’t do that anymore though. Some of my coins are worth more than twice as much because of the 70 grade than the ungraded. Like I probably wouldn’t have even purchased my 1914 $2.50 Gold Indian if it wasn’t slabbed and graded though. That is the second rarest of that coin though and I definitely wanted verification that it was problem free and graded. Even though it was only an AU58 it was still worth Hundreds more than an ungraded one. I sell on EBay and the slabbed and graded coins for me sell quicker and at a higher price too. Good video thanks 👍🏻

I am personally not into buying bullion coins. My regular gold purchasing designated as savings, is only ever Perth Mint minted bars. I do however allow myself two purchases per year of an old, vintage or ancient gold coin. This will only ever be purchased slabbed and in consultation with a professional. These coins have seen a 740% ish valuation increase over ten years.

Really enjoyed a great and ( funny) informational video. It was good to hear of your perspective on slabbed coins and bullion. I don't like slapped coins myself. As for slabbing modern bullion, and the added step often of, first day of issue, or early release, or first strike... That's what I call mediahype. In Modern bullion coins in MS-70 especially in gold, should not be an uncommon thing. Your double eagle UHR I contend is a different " breed." Ordered one at release from the mint. It's probably ms-70 DMPL. There are so many unique and beautiful things about this particular issue including its presentation cherry wood box,.. (stunning.) I thought of getting it graded just to see what grade it would receive. I'm sure I never will. With your slapped one, so funny "it's at risk," I would get another in a capsule and still leave that one as is. I may be a little cynical here.....but opening the slab exposes and subjects the coin to potential injury. Imagine, 🤔you have a perfect coin, and then in a matter of seconds you don't.😳

"Your double eagle UHR I contend is a different " breed."" I agree and a good case could be made for saying that it is "the best of breed". Gorgeous coin, for sure. Would love to have one but I am on a mission to stack as many ounces as I can. This means I have to keep the prices I pay as low as I can. Love building the stack, though. Not that the coins I have are impressive because they are just regular bullion coins for the most part. I do have some proofs, a lot of BUs, and some AUs but these are ones that I got at good prices some time ago. While I have achieved my silver stacking goal, I am still buying gold each quarter. I have a goal in mind for this as well and will stop stacking when it is met. With luck and the S not hitting TF before 2023 is out, I should make it.

That should make it easier or maybe just possible to respond to most of the problems that come up during hard times. I got a lot of good info from my parents and grandparents, both of whom went through the Great Depression of the 1930s. I listened to what they had to say and found it fascinating. I can see where another round of such times could happen and continue to be amazed at how many people are just totally oblivious to the changes we all see coming at us. They aren't doing anything to protect themselves from hard times and just continue to spend more than they have on frivolous things rather than on the things that could easily become critically important to us all. I would not. Since it is already giving your purchase the confidence of its validation. I just wouldn’t buy them because most of the selling I do is local shops. They don’t seem to give you much more value for having them graded. However with that being said sometimes they will pay just a little bit more for them. We’re talking maybe 2% at most unfortunately. Personally I like bullion best. Popular numismatic are nice to have a grade more for the need to be protected but not like I said something local coin shops will pay much for over any other premium coin outside that numismatic value.

Seems like the cost of grading just lost any premium you would have made. If someone else wanted to waste their money getting it priced, then fine. But it's going to at least give you spot plus minor premium especially a gold eagle. Yeah, the dealer was trying to snazz up the coin and push the value up, or at least falsely give more value than what it actually deserves. I would crack it out too.

I just don't get why people pay more for a slabbed coin just to crack it. It's your money, so do as you wish, but you often time pay more for it, and you just lost that premium that you paid for it. You're actively losing money. At that point, just buy a raw one. Even if I found it for cheaper than a raw, I wouldn't crack, because if push comes to shove, I can get more for that coin that I paid. It's easy money in that case. That's just my take though. Also, when you crack it, even if you keep the label, the grade on that label is automatically not valid. It's not backed by NGC or PCGS anymore.
