On January 22, 2009 the U.S. Mint released ultra high relief double eagles using the deep design that Saint-Gaudens envisioned. It is one ounce of .9999 fine gold. Because of their higher gold content, and greater striking pressure, the coins were 27 mm wide and 4 mm deep (the same diameter as a gold eagle), rather than the 34 by 2 usual for double eagles and bullion coins. The initial selling price was $1193. With the rising price of gold by June it had climbed to $1339, and by December to $1489. There was no limit on the coinage of these one time uncirculated issues, which bear the date "MMIX". In September the one coin per person ordering restriction was removed. The final mintage was 115,178.

After many years of watching different videos from many different stackers, this is still one of my favorite top 10 videos that I go back and watch to remind myself of how much I appreciate such a fine gold piece this coin really is. It’s the history, the talent, the determination, the times, the type of people it took to succeed, and the unique talent of an artist to make this whole thing come true . To appreciate this coin, over a century later, is testament to its perfection. Of my top 3 gold pieces (in no particular order): 2009 UHR SG, 2006 Rev Pf AGE, and 2013 Rev Pf Buffalo. All for different reasons, these 3 are on my “Mt. Rushmore” of modern U.S. semi-numismatic pieces. My fourth piece (to complete the metaphor reference) is the 2015 HR “Prooflike” American Gold $100 Liberty; there is just something about this coin that I can’t quite pinpoint, but it’s has a lot of eye appeal to me. I wish they would have made it a "no motto" coin, to more closely follow the original coinage. Other than that, it is as close to a perfect coin as has been made. I bought one and like you, it will be the last coin I sell. Thanks for sharing, this was a great vid.

KD35Collector Originally it was decided to leave out the motto, "In God We Trust" so as to separate God from money or mammon. According to Teddy Roosevelt and others, it was wrong to have God on money. I agree.

The Motto is the main thing I require on a Gold Coin .A 1908 in MS 65 w/ motto is worth 5X as much as a MS 65 without Motto !

Kelsey Curtis The motto has nothing to do with the value of your coin. You obviously do not have a D minted coin, which is what gives it value. The 1908 D motto coin in MS 65 sells for the same as a 1907. It is the mint mark (or lack there of) that makes it of value.

The D mint 1908 St. gaudens Does NOT have as much value as a P minted coin.Wrong on your statement. I have done this for 25 years look at a Greysheey or a Redbook and you won't make that argument ever again. The reason a 1908 St. with Motto is because of Low mintage numbers,that's not the case with the Denver minted St.Gaudens.

When I purchased mine back in 2010 it was a little over $1800 USD, nowadays it's in the $2500-$3000 range. It's a pretty nice profit, and it is still my favorite coin by far, the only thing that bothers me about it is that the plastic capsule doesn't do a very good job of keeping the coin itself from moving. I thought that it was a mistake made by the mint, but when I went back to the coin shop to look at another one, they told me that all of them r a bit loose.

Buy them now. Gold is low enough for now. I have watched some close on ebay lately for around $2800. That is really a steal, in my opinion.

After watching this video I looked up coins of the world. If anyone wants to see some beautiful coins look up top 10 most beautiful coins, WOW some of the coins will blow you away.And as far as this coin goes to a collector ,its a must, but at the right price. Right now you can find then for 2 times melt, which today is close to 1200.00. Expect to pay 2500.00 or more. I've seen people trying to sell them for 5000.00 that's out of touch with the market. Great video !!!

Great video! I missed this issue when it came out. I was hoping for something special for the 2015 high relief coin but that's left me underwhelmed. So now I'm looking to acquire one of these again. I am a bit confused though. The prices people are asking seem to be all over the place. One recent ebay auction sold for $1595 but today I'm seeing $2095 from one dealer and $2250 from another. Any idea what a fair price for the whole set with the coin, box, COA, book would be?

Well.. this makes me feel a little better. Thank you. I saw several auctions on eBay in the last week or so and the price seemed to be going up with each one. I eventually placed an order with PCE. They had an auction too but the cash price on their site was lower (just under $2k) so I went for it! I'm hoping to see my coin in another week maybe given the back and forth in the mail.

Thanks JM, It took me around four days to find one with low premium - the majority of individuals and dealers are selling it for $1200 - $1300 over spot! I guess I was lucky today to find someone who's walling to sell it for $400 over spot. Cheers

As far as the, "In God We Trust," goes it wouldn't be an option for the mint to make a version without it seeing that a law was passed in 1956 requiring it to appear on all U.S. currency. The coin is U.S. currency seeing that it is U.S. minted, marked, and denominated at $20.

115000 is a lot of coins minted. I still cant understand why they sell for 2 times melt. but I keep looking for 1 to buy at a reasonable price. I have coins with low mint numbers under 10,000 in MS70 grade . I see these in PL 69 for over $2000 still looking for 1 in original box with the book n paperwork.
