I Bought a RARE, Hello Kitty Sega Dreamcast - But It's Broken - There were only 2,000 of these Hello Kitty Sega Dreamcast game consoles made. It was a Japan only release and it will be worth about $200... if I can get it fully working. The seller said it was broken and when I test it, a disc won't play at all.

Great work! Alongside recapping the GD-ROM drive, I always add some lubrication to the rails of the disc drive as well before I go messing with the potentiometer, just since these things never really had appropriate lubrication, which is why it makes such gnarly noises. It still makes some noise post lube, but it's much improved over the stock noises.

Those sounds sounded almost like the lens (or something else) was grinding away on the disc surface. Good to know it’s normal (but improvable) behavior.

A Dreamcast without a disc drive that sounds like it's in pain during operation is functionally broken and useless. It's an essential part of the gaming experience.
@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy
@minmogrovingstrongandhealthy 5 ай бұрын
@@Operational117 The lens have it's own casing and cant come out of it at all above to those height levels where the disc would be. Something similar what you said actually can be happening with a ribbon cable on some disc drives, they come loose over the years (unglue) and start scraping the discs rendering them useless. You can still resurface the damaged discs but it's still damaged done to it. That is why it's important to test the device with a disc that is not important and not rare. The sounds you hear otherwise are the laser casing going alongside it's railing and that is all normal. Lubrication is advised just dont put too much of it and make sure you don't lubricate it with hard oil lubrications since they eat plastic. Use specific soft plastic lubrication pastes and you are good to go. If a console it maintaned right it can last you a lifetime. I still have a 1st gen PS1 and the only thing needed was a new laser after 20 years, the railing and all gears etc of the laser unit cartrige it's still all original. No recaps or anything yet. Just basic maintance of cleaning and lubricating every 3-5 years. (since my room is clean anyway so no grime or dust is present inside the consoles anyway)

Nah, that's when you replace the CD drive with a SD Card reader. Simple mod, gets rid of the drive noise, no disc changing again along and marginally faster loading all while playing on original hardware.

@defpally2954 why would I want to ruin that nostalgia? If I want to play an emulator, I'll fire up my pc with every game from Commodore to Xbox360 on it. I want the real experience like it was then.
@defpally2954
@defpally2954 5 ай бұрын
@@rianray7565 it is not an emulator. It is actual Dreamcast hardware and the data is being delivered over the exact same bus, it just gets it from an SD card instead of a noisy GD drive. The same Dreamcast hardware is running the game, with the same controllers, same button response time, etc. If the grinding noise is the part of the experience you must have I do not know what to say to you. Maybe fire up a bench grinder next to you if you have to have it.

@defpally2954
@defpally2954 5 ай бұрын
@@pikachu896 it's 1s and 0s being processed in the same manner they are regardless. If it holds some mythical value to you then that's cool, lots of people like the experience whether it is functionally different or not. But the question at hand was he called it emulation which is significantly different because that makes a best approximation of hardware, including having to translate USB control signals (for example) that introduces lag. And many Dreamcast games will not function if they require Windows CE on many emulators. This is not emulation (beyond delivery of data to the bus, which has no effect on gameplay). In fact, even with the mod unless you pop open the GD lid or see the interface on boot up you would never know the difference beyond the absence of drive noises. Let's face it here, the GD drive is now almost a 25 year old mechanical device that was built as cheaply as possible and is no longer in production. If it fails it is not a cheap repair. Mechanical devices eventually fail and I'd rather still be able to use my Dreamcast when that happens. It may not be "pure", but it is fully functional.

i have restored a number of these and most all of them just needed the laser adjusted when it came to reading the discs. i would start there when it came to getting the drive up and functional before moving on to gd-rom drive replacement or repair. the dreamcast is a tough and very well built system. they hold up over time and rarely need major parts replaced except in obvious cases of broken controller ports and stuff like that. never had a single one out of nearly 200 worked on that needed a single thing on the board replaced except for an odd port or battery replacement. sega had these made exceptionally well.

As someone who owns and has repaired multiple DCs I must say this Hello Kitty edition looks mint. Love it. Great job on the repair! This form of BIOS mod was quite common back in the day and also leads to the main menu saying "1.031.00" in the upper right, which is missing on stock systems. Also the ML2032 battery is soldered directly to the board by default. It is a common mod in the DC community to install a battery holder as it makes future replacements very easy. Edit: DC disc drives are loud and sound a bit like a printer or an old fax maschine. Its normal. Yours does sound a bit too rattly for my liking but I can confirm this is pretty common wear and tear and usually doesnt effect functionally. Though you can try lubricating the drives rails to make it at least a bit less rattly. Thanks for the video!

I don't know if you are talking about the noise in 11:33, but if you are talking about that noise, that is not the disc, that noise comes from the console fan, and you can change the fan. I kinda like that sound, is iconic, like the PSX after reading a game, is part of the experience. but there is at least one fan mod for the dreamcast out there "Noctua Silent Fan".

Recapping the GD board was the right call, I noticed at least two bulging caps as soon as you opened it, and capacitor plague was in full effect during this era. The drive noise is normal for Dreamcast. These consoles are just loud! I'd also recap the power supply since those are known to leak. Also clean the pins on the power supply molex Connector with deoxit (the long vertical pins where it connects to the main board).

I'd love more videos about Dreamcast, because I'm stuck with an issue and no one on Reddit could help me. I see that many commenters here have already repaired Dreamcasts so I give it a try : I have two consoles : one working PAL and one faulty JPN. On my faulty console the intro logo is not animated, and is stuck for long minutes before displaying the menu with the "disc being checked" error. I have the message, with and without disc in the console. - Put the GD-ROM drive from the faulty one to the working console : it works. - Put the GD-ROM drive from the working console to the faulty one : does not work. So it could mean that the GD-ROM is not the cause of the problem. Capacitors on motherboard and GD-ROM look good to me (but I'm no expert). It seems to get better according how tight is the GD-ROM screwed to the motherboard. With only 2 screws instead of 3, console booted instantly and I could navigate in the options Menu without being interrupted by the "disc being checked" message. So I cleaned contacts between motherboard and GD-ROM : nothing happened. Would that means that GD-ROM apply to much pressure on a chip beneath ?

Nice, I've got a few bad GD drives that could potentially be brought back to life. I never got into soldering, but I've got a few people I know who are damn good at it. I figure if I ever decide to try fixing them I'll start with the potentiometer before the capacitors. It's not a priority at the moment, one of the dead drives is basically in a dead parts console I put together out of a haul of four, made three good working Dreamcasts out of them. The other dead drive was from my original Dreamcast in high school, swapped in a GDemu before the market spazzed out. That one got the full mod treatment, short of soldering native HD output onto the motherboard, I believe that's the only untouched oem component left in it. Thankfully the rest of my DCs all still read games fine, I think I have about a dozen consoles or there about. However, only one of them reads every single one of my 35 games. The rest of them all have trouble with one specific game I have, which is in virtually pristine condition. Now the Sega CD on the other hand, I know I have a dead Model 1 for sure. I have two Model 2s but I think one of them works? I'm not sure if I have any of the cables, or at the least I'd have to dig around for them. I think I tested them back maybe a decade ago but I can't remember.

off-topic but have you done a video on the different variants of PS5 controllers namely the BDM-010, BDM-020 and the BDM-030 because I know physically the BDM-030 actually has 4 wires connecting the L2 and 4 to the R2. I know this because I recently purchased a faulty BDM-030 that the R2 wasn't working (needed either resetting or the ribbon re-seating) but when I noticed that it had 4 wires either side and couldn't find a video (including yours) that showed the BDM-030 I was confused.

I still play my dreamcast. The disc drive noise is so nostalgic. Never bothered me tbh. Dreamcast still probably my fav or second fav console next to ps2

Fav console didn't know they made special edition ones. Most underrated console not sure why if it was just bad timing when it came out or what.

not finished yet but from the sounds of it the lens is going on the DC, its a comment thing to happen, playing copy's on it can do it as the lens has to spin faster to read the CD as the DC is using a GD-ROM and that spins slower. sorry if bits are wrong this is just wat i remember from 20 years ago lol

taht controller board is modded the stock console does not have a battery holder. Hopefully when it was modded they added a diode to the resistor to disable the charging circuit so you can use standard CR2032 batteries. Stock dreamcasts must use ML2032 or LIR2032 batteries if you use a standard CR2032 the charge circuit will cause the CR2032 batteries to blow up.

What is the spikey metal tool you use? It almost looks like a dental scaler, but I'm not sure whether it is, as I would like one and can't seem to find that exact one. Thanks.

Don't recall you cleaning the lens or the lens track which could've been part of the issue as well.

Miss my dreamcast, had the keyboard and everything. Amazing console. Modded it to take SDCards and had it upscale to HDMI. Shouldn't have sold it.

If your dreamcast was manufactured from 1998 to 1999 to 2000 of September. You could play backup games. Because in October They put a anti-piracy.
