This reminds me of a time in California, a long time ago, that I visited a second hand book store in Chico. There was a room out back filled to the brim with old SF and fantasy books. You had to crawl across them in some places. I would by dozens at a time. Great times hunting. I was not as lucky as you, most were forgettable junk. But I discovered in all that a gem. One of the greatest fantasy books ever written, and for some bizarre reason little known about. The title is a little idiotic, but here it is : "The Wizards and the Warriors (Chronicles of an Age of Darkness, book 1". If you have not heard of it, trust me, you will either, like me, think this is one of the greatest or at least have a fantastic read.

A lot of these books you're reading seem to be in the aggregate books various people scattered across your region who are either retired or have already passed away and their kids (or grandkids) have sold to your local used bookstore (or Good Will, etc.) I'm 72 and have nearly all the sf you're showing here. I taught sf (history of) for 44 years at Arizona State University and my books are very pristine. What's more likeable about your site is your evenhandedness toward most of the authors and your fearlessness in reporting whether a book is likeable or not. And, too, you're articulate and very well-read. However, when I started out in1979, you could never equivocate or even suggest an author isn't as good as he, she, or their fans think they are. I tried to smile through my classes that had the sternest personalities, but mostly if the book was long (Stand on Zanzibar), difficult, (Radix,) or challenging (Philip K. Dick), my students would have none of it. They wanted novels that were short and sweet (or novels they've already read, in series). One other thing: the better students, I had in my Introduction to SF class were the women; men the worst. The reason? video games. Guys (at ASU) couldn't focus (or relax) enough to read more than 10 minutes. The women were often faster readers and had a greater interest in the great female authors of the last 20 years, especially Sherri S. Tepper, Octavia Butler, Alice Sheldon. Good site here.

Looks like a fun and lively auction waiting to happen. Radix, various short story collections including a Kornbluth, a slightly high kinky-cover on a kinky-book count, and even a cool-looking Starchild Trilogy. I had read The Last Legends of Earth and loved it, when not long after that I found a used copy of Radix and of course devoured it. I remember I read it shortly after reading Ender's Game, and thinking Radix might be a terrific book for fans of Ender, not so much because the plots are in any way similar, but because of the personality type and intrepidness of the main character. Anyway, maybe I'm off on Pluto on that one - but yeah, for me, it was interesting to read those books so close together. I read A Feast Unknown way back when because it actually showed up on a "100 Best" Fantasy book list. Interesting book to get picked as a "Best" Fantasy exercise - it's not really my thing, but it was certainly a singular reading experience. I've only read one other book by the author - The Unreasoning Mask, which I personally enjoyed a lot more, and would be quicker to recommend.

I haven’t come across anything else Ballard wrote but I’m always on the look out. I’m gonna try reading Dune again after I’m done with the book I’m on right now, so I might pop in the Whatnot stream for those sequels if I like it! :) Rama and the black Zelaznys are tempting me as well, most of the stuff in this video is. I read Feast Unknown many years ago as a teen. I was grabbed initially by the premise that Tarzan and Doc Savage were brothers. I guess I'm misremembering this a bit because Wikipedia says that was the intent but they were actually distinct characters from their inspirations. Anyway, it was the only PJF I've read. I recall liking it and being weirded out by it in somewhat equal parts.

_The Traveller in Black_ is very good. I would not have thought of it as dying earth stories. But it is fantasy that is subtly on the edge of science fiction in an interesting way. He writes in an afterword to the 2008 Penguin Modern Classics Edition that this is because the publisher Signet replied to him in 1962 that booksellers would have put Hothouse in the garden section. I do recommend reading Helliconia when you have the time.

'A Feast Unknown' is in my view Farmer's most important and best book. it was published by Essex House, an imprint which specialised in pornographic SF. It's brilliant, a metfictional New Wave masterpiece that shows as much influence from William S Burroughs as it does Edgar Rice Burroughs. Farmer's Tarzan/Savage pastiches are the linchpins of his Wold Newton sequence, a set of novels, stories and fake biographies that inspired Alan Moore's 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'. I'll be uploading a Wold Newton video soon, as I've just mentioned it in a video I finished last week, which is yet to stream. Attanasio - I'll never forget buying 'Radix' when it was first published in the Uk around 82/83 and being blown away by it. It is more like Delany than LOTR or Dune - again, it's postmodern high-style New Wave SF. I mentioned Attanasio's story 'The Star Pools' in my Shea/Vance/Lovecraft video - you should hang onto that one, Matt. There are three sequels and collectively the books are known as 'The Radix Tetrad'. Silverberg - 'Recalled To Life' is a good one. 'Downward to the Earth' is key Silveberg, in my top 5. Silverberg stepped away from SF early 60s and had an amazing career writing Non-fiction for adults and children that was commercially successful and acclaimed. Several of his earlier stories were expanded and revised later sixties when he returned to SF and entered his Butterfly stage, producing his finest work until 1974. He quit SF as the magazine market collapsed at that point and he quit hackwork, which he'd produced a ton of until then (in SF, crime and softcore adult novels). Good buncha books again, happy selling!

Maybe Dying Inside, it's his most famous work. I think you can pick up any Silverberg and be in good shape though

Dune was one of those books that stuck with me... I read it in 1972... concepts such as ecological disaster and its aftermath and jihad were completely new to me, beyond it being a compelling adventure narrative in a marvelous foreign world structure... the sequels (two I read) did not work for me... I thought the story went off the rails... now the sequels are an industry, which is a big red flag...

Yes, but it has a much better cover than the Best of Cordwainer Smith. Keep them both. Read the Humanoids. You aren't doing it any favors with your description. A Canticle for Lebowitz precedes Delany and isn't anything like a Delany book. Radix is nothing like Dune or Dhalgren, which I read when it was first published and just finished slogging through this summer. Didn't hold up. Keep the Sturgeon if only for the Powers cover. Nine Princes in Amber and The Guns of Avalon are must reads.

Have you ever read any James White? Be interested on your take on him, he wanted to write sci-fi from a pacifist perspective in a time when there was a lot of military sci fi out there. Hospital Station is a good starting point to see if it grabs you.

“Image of the Beast” by Playboy Press (their now defunct imprint,) is a crazy fun read, I just reread it recently. PJF also has another wild ass erotic book by the Playboy imprint called “Image of the Beast/Blown” even more spicy than Feast:

'Blown' is of course the sequel to 'Image', but there have been omnibus editions. The third book in the sequence, which is tangentially related is 'Traitor to the Living', quite different to its predecessors. The two sequels to 'A Feast Unknown' are anemic by comparison ('Lord of the Trees' and 'Keepers of the Secrets' aka 'The Mad Goblin' - though 'Lord' is a great adventure novel, if conventional, unlike 'Feast'.

#bookpilled I'm not at all sold on your random title selection approach. In fact, it sounds like you have already run into the problem I would anticipate: way too many DNFs. The fact of the matter is that the genre has a lot of schlock. As you have commented, even really good authors put out some clunkers. Maybe a random walk through a selected library of titles would be interesting, but a near random selection of science fiction will predictably have too much questionable material.
