Ellery Queen was a pen name primarily shared between two writing partners, but occasionally lent out to others, including Jack Vance. He wrote four books using Ellery Queen, but that Dragon's Teeth wasn't one of his.

Lee's Flat Earth books are perhaps similar in tone to Vance's Dying Earth books but not a continuation of them. The Flat Earth is like JRRT's Middle-earth, set in the mythical past of our own world. You might be thinking of A Quest for Simblis by Michael Shea.

I remember reading an absolutely scathing review of Chalker’s “Winds of the Changewar” (I think it’s called?) in Dragon magazine when I was a teen & I never thought to try his stuff after that. I’ll be interested to see what you think of him.

Yeah, so would I. Now that transgender issues are "in", I'm curious to know what Gen Z'ers think about his work. Chalker was very much into It.

Hope you will be able to remove all those ugly price tags. Why do used booksellers stick ugly price tags on the front covers of books? We need to educate these people!
@freiabereinsam- Жыл бұрын
yeah Id rather just stick a little piece of paper with the price and have the price digitalized. Always hate the leftovers and cover marks from scratching off these devil's glues

I don't know what the deal is with those stickers. Good book dealers use pencil on a corner of the first page (some scratch out the original price, which is just daft). Only thrift stores use stickers, in my experience.

Jeter's Noir is quite dense, and is a Sci Fi Noir mystery, with some great concepts in it. I don't understand why Jeter is not widely known, he's amazing.
@jasonhesseltine3520 Жыл бұрын
Not well known?? Jeter was the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees for 20 years! What's less well known is that he was a private detective in the offseason, a man who walked the mean streets of the Bronx, putting right what once went wrong. MVPD, most valuable private dick.

If you like early weird stuff, you might want to look out for Arthur Machen, a Welsh writer of totally unsentimental tales involving faeries and other unnerving folk archetypes.

I absolutely loved Jack L. Chalker's Well of Soul series, especially the original 5-parter, starting with Midnight at the Well of Souls. Well World is awesome with a multitude of alien species. Hexes are divided into technological, semi-industrial, (steam power works), and magic systems.

I am visiting Carlsbad over the Thanksgiving weekend. I’m an eBay reseller specializing in SF&F. Can you recommend any book sources?
@simonagree407011 ай бұрын
Interesting. That's a lot of books, and only two that I own (four if you count the Sherlock Holmes, which I have in a two-volume complete set), or would even **want** to own -- Naked Lunch, and Neutron Star. It kind of illustrated why I don't pay much attention to the SF section of bookstores any more; the kind of books I like have all disappeared to the collector's market. Shocking, I know! My interests in SF and Fantasy pretty much begin with John Campbell's Unknown magazine and peter out in the early '80s, with few exceptions. I love those Richard Powers covers on the '50s Ballantine books, and the Leo & Diane Dillon covers on the Ace paperbacks, and the spooky covers on Ray Bradbury books. More to the point, I prefer the contents. I did go back and read late Heinlein, from Time Enough For Love, a while ago, and found them all very creepy (and not in a good way) except for Job.

Eddison is an absolute treat! I wouldn't say he's "more" boring than JRRT, but his writing is a bit harder to get used too although worth the work. Ouroboros is kind of written like if Shakespeare wrote the Illiad; the language is high falutin and the characters are "heroic" in the Greek kind of way. Basically, they're a bunch of flawed bastards. Mistress of Mistresses is also really good. Fish Dinner is less good, but I still haven't read Mezentian Gate.

@@Bookpilled Amazing. Meanwhile, I’m glad you loved The Night Land, and it might lead to a bit of lounging around in 1900-1930 Fantasy and SF. It’s a great landscape of neglected gems. Dwellers in the Mirage is pretty cool, but of Merritt’s stuff, I prefer The Ship of Ishtar, or The Face in the Abyss. But Dwellers in the Mirage works.
