I’ve been a wilderness rescue medic for 40 years. I can tell you from experience that ambulances suck off road. To the point that we specifically have to tell the ambulance drivers not to leave pavement, we will come to them.

I did all the maintance on a fleet of Ford ambulaces in the 80s, the best thing that ever happened was switching from 460 gas to the 7.3 lited diasels. One thing to be aware is engine hours are double the milage and we went from 4 MPG to 12 MPG with the diasels. Those equipped with turbos were super stout. I would buy that little mini pumper in a heartbeat if I could still drive a straight shift.

Manual windows, manual shift. Just those two things bring back so many memories of days gone past. Days of vinyl seats that got hot in the sun during June and July. Slip on into the car wearing shorts. Scald off a few inches of skin from the backs of your legs. Forget that shiny chrome tab of your seatbelt might as well be glowing it's so hot. Brand yourself on the side right a hip level. Thinking of those vinyl seats, you dared not armor all them unless you enjoyed sliding off them like water sheets of rainx. All of those pieces look like they'll be fine gems for someone that scores them off the lot.

Ignition switch on that Tan Ford is on the top of the column (electric sw.) The lid is coming off and can be Peened back on with a small hammer. Two little Tabs are loose.

re-equip the brushtruck to fight fires again, then sell to a rual fire departmet they are always looking for equipment. turn the ambulace in to a tool truck that follows your 18-wheeler to repair it on the go and not pay a roadside mechanic to come out.

Those miles on that engine would be valid. Most tend to have higher hours (think scene idling and pump operations) and lower miles as they don't roll often and tend to age out before wearing out. Great video!

Ignition switch tip. After pulling shroud off column. Take a 6 to 8" , 1/4 flat blade screwdriver and a small hammer. Put a dent in the outside head of the tamperproof screws. Then change the angle of the screwdriver to knock the screw loose. Use needle nose pliers to unscrew them. Second hint. The hf 20 degree offset long nose pliers. 7/16" from the tip make a small chainsaw file depression like this. ( ) you will be amazed at how handy those pliers become.

This brings back memories of my first days in EMS. Those 6.9IDI’s were TURDS! I’d always check the rear view mirrors to see if I was tied off to something. Never seemed to gain speed unless going downhill. 7.3IDI wasn’t much better. The electrical system was severely overloaded as well. Always needed a shoreline umbilical cord at the hospital or they wouldn’t start. Turned me off until I drove a Dodge Cummins! Emergency vehicles have come a long way.

Man oh man the memories both the squad and the others . I worked for IH that built those motors for Ford . Nobody trusted the Ford dealer in town so we got a bunch of work all the time till Ford started building their own motors. I was a volunteer paramedic and we had ambulance just like that. We should have had a 4x4 out there in the wilds of Oregon-- Rogue Rescue and Ambulance

I have told my dirt bike buddies that an ambulance would make a great bike hauler rig/camper. Also you could leave the hospital bed inside in case someone crashes! Haha! Thanks for the great videos Clint!
