The reason there's so many New 3DS shovelware is because, unlike the old 3DS, the New 3DS has Unity support, so the barrier of entry to actually make a "functional" game is lower. If there's a New 3DS game that could run on an old 3DS with proper optimization, then it's probably made in Unity.

IIRC, the reason why there are so many N3DS "exclusive" games is because Nintendo added Unity support for the N3DS when it released. You could even download the SDK fairly easily from Nintendo themselves back in the day.

The guy who made Silver Falls is actually releasing more WiiU and 3DS games this year before the eShop closure, and just released a new 3DS game relatively recently. He is absolutely dedicated to his craft and somewhat insane, though he obviously puts a lot of love into his projects. I recommend supporting him if you like odd, experimental, janky lil games.

For clarity, the reason these games on "new" 3DS Only is because (I assume) they were made with Unity using the N3DS Packages. Unity supported "new" 3DS as a platform so that's why the game banners are all square to fit within the res of the banners, and why the game main menu smaple beeps like that. It's because they didn't implament their own sample. . I would know since I'm working on porting Baldi's Basics Classic to the "new" 3DS as we speak. But that's not to say that they couldn't run on Old 3DS. Fan made FNaF ports were made using Unity for N3DS and they also run on Old 3DS.

I.F.O. Is available on Android and PC. 36 Fragments of Midnight is available on Switch, PC and PS4. Pirate Pop Plus is available on Switch and PC. Infinite Golf has a sequel on Switch. However, some 3DS games that came out late in the lifecycle have secret New 3DS enhancements, for instance Yoshi's Woolly World, which runs at 60fps as opposed to the old 3DS' locked 30fps. Hyrule Warriors Legends is almost unplayable on old 3DS, and maybe that's why Fire Emblem Warriors is "New 3DS only"

Back before Definitive Edition came out Xenoblade 3D was seen as a very good alternative to the rare/expensive Wii Version if the player owned a New 3DS and didn't have a Wii U for the Virtual Console version (which was surprisingly likely.) As it's basically identical to the original Wii version of the game just with slightly decreased graphical quality, no Japanese audio option, and with a new gallery mode that tied into Amiibo support (that notably is the only thing that did not return in Definitive Edition.) The only real bugs with that version was that two cutcenes had messed up lighting on the character models but they where both very short cutscenes so it's not even a nitpick. Nowadays though, there's no reason not to buy the Switch version over the other two versions unless you want to collect a physical copy of the original Wii version. And I'm speaking as someone who has played all versions of the game extensively. Plus now you get the benefit of all three mainline games on one console which is great! Though to this day I hold Xenoblade 3D as the greatest pre-Switch port of a home console game to hand held console ever made.

I think they should. The switch/lite are "handheld" but I really don't consider them portable. Imo, in order to be portable, it has to fit in your pocket. No more dual screen or gimmicks, I think we just need a new iteration of the Gameboy.

Terraria 3DS also is N3DS/O3DS cross compatible. The N3DS has a mode where you can have a bigger “expanded map” but only for N3DS. Kinda nifty for that particular game cause its a fantastic port and only occasionally lag spikes even on the old 3ds.

To answer your question, there are a couple reasons they picked those Street Fighter Games. SFII Turbo is widely considered the most balanced version of SFII and the competitive players would prefer this version over others, while the casual fan would prefer to play The New Challengers with the largest roster of SFII games of the SNES. The original SFII just doesn’t hold up with either audience very well. Now Alpha is a different story. Street Fighter Alpha is a completely different game, with different mechanics, characters and art. The Street Fighter Alpha Series has 3 different games and Alpha 2 is the most popular by far, many Street Fighter Fans consider is one of the best balanced games ever. However I don’t think this was a good choice because the SNES version of Alpha 2 has pretty bad slow down at the beginning of each round. I’m sure they could have ported a better version of the game if they actually wanted to. Like it runs perfectly fine on arcade machine, PS1, PSP, even the GBA. There’s even a fan patch that fixes the slowdown on original hardware or emulation. The 3DS had a port of Ultra Street Fighter IV that ran great and they couldn’t get a better port of Alpha 2. TL; DR Alpha 2 isn’t a SFII game, and there is no need for the original SFII when Turbo is the better competitive game and The New Challengers is the better casual game.

The so called "XL“ version is for normal hands. I don’t know why the "normal“ sized DSi / 3DS and New 3DS even exist (DS and DS Lite are an exception as an XL option wasn’t even available back then) I can’t even hold one comfortably and the screens are very small so I have to look at the screens really closely and I’m talking from experience from holding a 3DS (I have a DSi XL and New 3DS XL)

Nathaniel, I played Neopets when I was much younger, though I've forgotten nearly any of it's games by now. Neopets is actually where I first used my commonly-used username of "zigazav", as when I was much younger, I didn't know that you are meant to make usernames for yourself that you can remember easily for logging back in (I was a very foolish kid) so, when crafting my username for the site, I took letters from the printed face of a educational game's CD, with no real reasoning of the order, and crafted the made-up word of mine "zigazav" using those selected letters, and because of extensively playing Neopets with that username when I was much younger, that may be why the word I made-up "zigazav" is forever burnt into my memory. I don't go to the Neopets site anymore, in several years, as I've literally abandoned that site, but it's what got me to forever to remember zigazav. If anybody sees the username "zigazav" anywhere online, it's almost certainly me.

I developed over a dozen games for the New 3DS and I’m pretty sure you played every single one. It’s been years since I left game development but glad to see these got some sort of audience before they disappeared forever. Also they are New 3DS exclusive, not because they use the extra horsepower, but because they were developed in Unity and we couldn’t target normal 3DS hardware with Unity.

Nathaniel, wdym?? SNES games were FANTASTIC on a new 3DS, especially in pixel perfect mode. Pixel perfect mode is LITERALLY that, and it looks A LOT better than 4:3 standard mode
