I completely agree, never run a diesel without water in the cooling system. Like you said, those engines have precombustion chambers with rubber seals and rubber liner seals. Even without those things water pump seals running dry etc is bad. So many guys do this. Then they wonder why they get problems. If I were you I’d pressure test the cooling system on that engine before installing it. If you have to pull the head, it’s a lot easier now.

I worked for a Cat dealer for years. I totally agree with you, never running any engine without coolant in it. The 1693TA is almost as tough as a 6 1/4" bore D353 PCTA my favorite engine or the D343 PCTA. I remember one D353 that had 60K hours on it before it was shutdown for overhaul.

Love them old 1693s...If you were buying a used truck, and heard one idling on the lot, you'd walk right on past it. At idle, they sound like an old washing machine. They pulled hard...

I really don't remember when I subscribed but maybe you know with all the technology available. I'm 72 now and just hanging on as different parts of me fail. I keep telling em to let me go as I just got no reason to rob air from the young anymore. After some very tremulous years in the continental, I came to alaska to live forever as no one there gave two cents.... believe me I had to work my brain to keep that easy reading. I did my short hitch in army came home to nothing so here I am. Living outside wasilla alaska. As my tastes wain from the work I did as a kid now as I reflect on my years in my thirties and forties, as a mechanic in the southeast on the different islands and trust me nothing like todays shops. After losing three boys in four years it kinda took the wind out of me and I stepped back to sniff the flower bed I pissed on off the porch. I got hurt bad enough to cripple a small bear and I just couldn't fight it no more. I caught a man who fell from a ladder and I should of said "Ol lay" in spanish of course but nope not geared that way and he landed on his feet when I set him down with a torn t shirt pocket. Me; NOT so good, I had several broken vertebrae in my neck and my lumbar was mush. I told you this before and your going to remember like the ex who remembered everything I ever did wrong in my life... my entire life and some. Well long and short the fifteen years have been long and miserable and doctors think your a pill chaser cause they don't see the problem till one finally did find it and it was too late to fix cause of age and no suicide by doctor rule and I am telling to just go for it, one way or another if it ain't enjoyable then count me in a new game. The reasons for commenting, I have been all over that area many years ago and like Wallis Idaho those buildings of brick and mortar have been there since someone trapped beaver out of the ponds. Maybe not that long but a while. So nice to ride along. The other is a guy I know local who is a snowbird, texas in winter months and here in sommer. He has a truck up on one of his properties where he keeps a bunch of internationals and there is a old long nose KW that has a 1693 in it and was parked because of a broken bellhousing. It was a long haul truck and that guy who owned it had marital problems and just never came back for it. I would say its been there twenty years and according to my buddy, It still ran great and it was complete except for that bellhousing. I can't remember much now as its been some time since I seen it and it is not easy for me to get out so if they are scarce, then I can give you his no. and put the two of you in contact with each other. I really liked that big black truck and reminded me of one I had that had gone too far and wouldn't hold liners anymore. I would get up and let five gallons of water out of the oil pan... and that was from driving it thinking go ahead and blow up but no it just kept on ticking. Tighten the drain plug and refill all the orifices so things were right and it moved anything you wanted to move and I mean anything. I have never heard a engine purr any better. Well thats my story and I am sticking to many parts of it as ninety nine and one hundred per cent true as I can remember

I really admire your knowledge of Cat engine’s. It is interesting to listen to you talk about engines like this or when you tear an engine down for overhaul. I spent my career installing, servicing and selling printing presses, so to listen to a guy who is spending his life working on and around diesel driven equipment is most interesting. Thanks for making the videos and .......sharing your knowledge. From Missouri

Running an engine of any type that's water cooled when dry scares the hell out of me...the first thing that came to mind was how often or who else was this done for. You cook the crevice seals around the liners and that's big time work to correct...my 2 cents worth.

I don't know anything about the precup engines but I can say for sure there's no issue running E model or C15 family engines without water in them, as long as it's only for a short time. No issues with upper filller bands, etc. Cool old engine. Enjoyed the video.

What a nice run to get your new motor. Sounded great and IMHO I would of blocked both ends of the engine to add another layer of protection and to prevent any slippage if you had needed to shut it down in a hurry I'd like to live up in Idaho if I weren't sickly. Washington DC has some of f the best medical in the entire country and I reckon I'll die over here. But pretty country and clean air.

Coolant line in pan and quick release is probably to preheat engine off of a pickup or service truck. Seen it before on skidders. Pull up to job, connect cooling lines from truck to equipment, sit in truck for half hour and let it warm up the other engine

In my part of Oregon we have an abandoned RR that has been turned into a bike path and walking trail. It cuts through prime farm land and they have placed restrictions on using herbicides and insecticides within 150 ft. of the trail. Farmers are not happy with this requirement. Trail users also contribute to a lot of unwanted litter in the fields.

Sitting in a truck stop idling sometimes it sounded like a trash can rolling across the cement lot, but point it in any direction & it would run with just about everything else out there on the road!

I don't think that there is any question that four wheelers are a major contributor to a lot of truck accidents. Yes, the four wheelers do stupid things, but suspect a lot of it is simply congestion that is not present now. If you have a pretty much open roads there is a lot less chance of getting tangled up with a bunch of squishy cars. Number one rule, stay away from semi trucks when driving, they are bigger and heavier than you are. LOL

Running without water is a big no no like you say. Not only o-ring damage but it can break the heads. I have seen D9 engines that ran low on water crack into the pre chamber bores and leak water ruining the head. I would assume that other indirect injection Cat engines will do the same. in any event it ain't good. Cheers
