I operated the 631C and 637C scrapers for several years. These scrapers are nose heavy when turning, I found when turning empty, have the cushion hitch locked down and the bowl right on the ground, then turn fast and quick to line up with the cut. The 631C's are more nose heavy because no rear engine for weight.

Jeff that was a great history lesson on your scrapers, here in tassie years ago we converted the scrapers into underground dump trucks by removeing all the bowl area from the hitch back and fitted a dump body which carried upto 80t in some cases and they never even groaned with carrying it they became a real workhorse and very reliable when the mine closed down they transferred them to another and just wore them out by then underground dump and ejector trucks we appearing, so Jeff it also brought back memories to me as a cat fitter. ( the mine was Cleveland tin mine luina Tasmania) thank you Jeff

J.B. Maxwell We used more or less the same thing at the Windarra nickel mine in the 1970s in Western Australia, they were a 631 scraper with a tipping rock body instead of a bowl. They were converted by Wigmores Caterpillar in Perth and were called a Wigtruck. I took some photos of them on this KZbin video kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4mViZJji85oiJo

Hi, Jpaydirt. Good video. Thanks for sharing some of the history - and some of the 'technical stuff' about your 637s. I have just located a 637D down around Los Angeles for the Santa Margarita Ranch for some projects that they have coming up on the ranch. Now bought and paid for, it should be arriving here on the ranch on December 27 or 28. I'm looking forward to that. BTW, don't wait too long to come down to one of the Best Of The West shows at the ranch on Memorial Day Weekend each year. Our mutual friend, the late Glen Ghilotti, was a HUGE contributor to all the shows that have been held here, the first in 2010 and then every year from 2015 onward. Merry Christmas to you and yours too, and thanks again for the video. Just my 0.02. You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Back in the 80,s the strip mine companies would use them to pull topsoil and put it back and sometimes to cut highways . I don't think I have seen more than a couple in running condition here in eastern Ohio since the mid 90,s . Just not much to do with them here . You guys seem to keep yours really busy . Cat equipment is very popular here but most of the scrapers were Terex . Thank you for the vids and have a Merry Christmas .

I'm no heavy equipment operator but hauled some for 7 years on just 6 axles total. Once loaded for first time, by myself, and hauled two old 627 push-pulls back to back from a job site on a home made dolly trailer 237 miles each. They were junk, auctioned off to a small company and run them both on same permits in Ohio. It took me longer then most experienced guys by a half day and my dispatcher in central told me "rest assured we won't ask you again to dolly a scrapper." I told him no sweat off my ass! Just homemade dolly and junk scrappers that been sitting in a field with froze up brakes. No one was hurt or got killed. Damn I was mad.

It's because new scrapers are over one MILLION dollars, so the farm tractors are affordable, everytool has a purpose and those are good for jobs where high production is not required, I asked a guy selling this stuff the very same question you just posed at ConExpo and he said well how much is a new 637? I told him and he said well you can have one of these for 250k to which I said I can buy a ton of 37's for 250k and bury that JD LOL people don't understand that for very little money you can rebuild an old machine and it will run like it was new, I can't use farm tractors for what I do as they won't pick up rocks, I have a friend with 631E's and he had a couple of farm type scrapers, he said all they were good for was to do clean up as he had lasers on them, but again it depends on what your doing, every tool has a special purpose and momma said this special tool is supposed to keep this old stuff running LOL

I remember those rates. I even had one that was floating. It was 2% over prime, another loan was 17%. That’s just the way it was, so we just had to make sure the yellow iron stayed busy. We survived it too. If people had to pay those rates today for equipment and vehicles, they’d drizzle down their britches leg, whine and bitch about it.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Would a rubber block like their cushion dozer work for the plate in the front of the scraper? Also when you are hauling between the cut and fill do you only use the front engine and let the rear engine idle? Do you watch So Cal Earthmovers? I saw a scraper on there where they welded the rear hook on the stinger of a 651 so it could pull a twin engine scraper with it.
@stanpatterson50336 жыл бұрын
Rubber block would never hold up to the up-and-down abuse. It could probably withstand the crushing for a short while, but eventually even the crushing alone would begin to tear it apart. If you want an example of rubber blocks not being able to withstand up-and-down abuse for a long period of time, go look at the rubber blocks on the backs of freight trailers, and also the rubber blocks on freight docks on buildings. The motion of forklifts running in and out of trailers at loading docks causes a fair amount of up-and-down motion where the trailer experiences added weight and the whole back end tends to dive down, or during unloading, suddenly the weight of the forklift and skids being removed causes the trailer to ride up high until the airbag system bleeds off the excess pressure and returns to "normal height". That example of block abuse would be a light version of the up-and-down abuse that the stinger and pushblocks get subjected to on the front and back of these machines. That is why only steel and grease are used, because rubber just would not last. There is too much up-and-down motion, and while it's undesired movement, it's pretty much unavoidable due to the terrain and also the motion of the machines and the flexing that they do while filling their pans, lowering and lifting.
@briangardiner10156 жыл бұрын
@@stanpatterson5033 What do they use on Cushion Dozers?
@stanpatterson50336 жыл бұрын
Don't know, Brian. What do they use, and what kind of abuse do they see compared to what the stingers and push blocks experience? If the stinger of a scraper rides up suddenly, will the pushblade rise up with it, or will the pushblade stay exactly where the operator has set it? I'm not being sarcastic, just asking.
@briangardiner10156 жыл бұрын
@@stanpatterson5033 I think the top part of the cushion dozer blade has rubber blocks to absorb shock when it contacts the stinger on the scraper. But I don't think you could put one on the push plate on the front of a push pull.
