love the history and going over all you've had to do to them. its amazing the abuse equipment can take. Just looking over all the old iron I've bought it makes you wonder what kind of life it had when you see some of the repairs. My latest machine is from the 40's and I'm sure its moved a lot of material in its lifetime.

I love my Cat scrapers. The one thing I miss from the 627B to the 627F is the hydraulic suspension seat. I also had a professor in college who ran a large contracting business, and he said if it isn’t green, then it isn’t a real scraper. So he gave us a hard time about that haha

Jeff when I first started watching your channel and saw your pans I thought what in the world does he do with those . Back in the 80,s the strip mine companies would use them to pull topsoil and put it back and sometimes to cut highways . I don't think I have seen more than a couple in running condition here in eastern Ohio since the mid 90,s . Just not much to do with them here . You guys seem to keep yours really busy . Cat equipment is very popular here but most of the scrapers were Terex . Thank you for the vids and have a Merry Christmas .

I remember those rates. I even had one that was floating. It was 2% over prime, another loan was 17%. That’s just the way it was, so we just had to make sure the yellow iron stayed busy. We survived it too. If people had to pay those rates today for equipment and vehicles, they’d drizzle down their britches leg, whine and bitch about it.

Cool background of equipment video. Kids today think 4.75% interest is high: I well remember 21% and higher interest rates in the early 80's,as well as the first savings and loan crash. I went into the USN in 1981 during that recession. If memory serves I think I was making $670.00 a month as an E-3 then Reagan was elected and we got a decent raise to $740.00 I think lol.

Scraper operation is a young man's job! Jeff said he likes running them. Therefore he must still be a youngster? Regardless of a cushion hitch or air ride seat, 8-12 hours on one of these is a long day! I was 657 hand for quite awhile. Saw&did some interesting stuff back then. Still glad when I changed for the day to a 988, D8 or 9, or the blade or even the water job. Seems like I always wound up back on the scrapers...good money for a punk-ass kid.

I remember working for a guy that had three T-Rexes two of them were Push Pull and one of them was not he had one of them 637s but I never seen it run they all said it would work circles around those T-Rexes butt it was too expensive for the guy I guess to fix up so it just sat there I didn't think those Allison Transmissions were all that good in the T-Rexes I couldn't assume what somebody was thinking other than price only why they would trade down to a T-Rex from a caterpillar I can't remember anybody enjoying one of those T-Rexes anybody that claims they like the sound of a Detroit should have to sit between two of them on one of those T-Rexes just my opinion

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Would a rubber block like their cushion dozer work for the plate in the front of the scraper? Also when you are hauling between the cut and fill do you only use the front engine and let the rear engine idle? Do you watch So Cal Earthmovers? I saw a scraper on there where they welded the rear hook on the stinger of a 651 so it could pull a twin engine scraper with it.
@stanpatterson50335 жыл бұрын
Rubber block would never hold up to the up-and-down abuse. It could probably withstand the crushing for a short while, but eventually even the crushing alone would begin to tear it apart. If you want an example of rubber blocks not being able to withstand up-and-down abuse for a long period of time, go look at the rubber blocks on the backs of freight trailers, and also the rubber blocks on freight docks on buildings. The motion of forklifts running in and out of trailers at loading docks causes a fair amount of up-and-down motion where the trailer experiences added weight and the whole back end tends to dive down, or during unloading, suddenly the weight of the forklift and skids being removed causes the trailer to ride up high until the airbag system bleeds off the excess pressure and returns to "normal height". That example of block abuse would be a light version of the up-and-down abuse that the stinger and pushblocks get subjected to on the front and back of these machines. That is why only steel and grease are used, because rubber just would not last. There is too much up-and-down motion, and while it's undesired movement, it's pretty much unavoidable due to the terrain and also the motion of the machines and the flexing that they do while filling their pans, lowering and lifting.
@briangardiner10155 жыл бұрын
@@stanpatterson5033 What do they use on Cushion Dozers?
@stanpatterson50335 жыл бұрын
Don't know, Brian. What do they use, and what kind of abuse do they see compared to what the stingers and push blocks experience? If the stinger of a scraper rides up suddenly, will the pushblade rise up with it, or will the pushblade stay exactly where the operator has set it? I'm not being sarcastic, just asking.
@briangardiner10155 жыл бұрын
@@stanpatterson5033 I think the top part of the cushion dozer blade has rubber blocks to absorb shock when it contacts the stinger on the scraper. But I don't think you could put one on the push plate on the front of a push pull.

Jeff, I am starting to see a lot of contractors going away from power units and going to bih ag tractors pulling 2 or 3 17 yd. Pans. Just wondering what your opinion was on that method. Thank you.
@Jpaydirt5 жыл бұрын
It's because new scrapers are over one MILLION dollars, so the farm tractors are affordable, everytool has a purpose and those are good for jobs where high production is not required, I asked a guy selling this stuff the very same question you just posed at ConExpo and he said well how much is a new 637? I told him and he said well you can have one of these for 250k to which I said I can buy a ton of 37's for 250k and bury that JD LOL people don't understand that for very little money you can rebuild an old machine and it will run like it was new, I can't use farm tractors for what I do as they won't pick up rocks, I have a friend with 631E's and he had a couple of farm type scrapers, he said all they were good for was to do clean up as he had lasers on them, but again it depends on what your doing, every tool has a special purpose and momma said this special tool is supposed to keep this old stuff running LOL

I operated the 631C and 637C scrapers for several years. These scrapers are nose heavy when turning, I found when turning empty, have the cushion hitch locked down and the bowl right on the ground, then turn fast and quick to line up with the cut. The 631C's are more nose heavy because no rear engine for weight.

Hi, Jpaydirt. Good video. Thanks for sharing some of the history - and some of the 'technical stuff' about your 637s. I have just located a 637D down around Los Angeles for the Santa Margarita Ranch for some projects that they have coming up on the ranch. Now bought and paid for, it should be arriving here on the ranch on December 27 or 28. I'm looking forward to that. BTW, don't wait too long to come down to one of the Best Of The West shows at the ranch on Memorial Day Weekend each year. Our mutual friend, the late Glen Ghilotti, was a HUGE contributor to all the shows that have been held here, the first in 2010 and then every year from 2015 onward. Merry Christmas to you and yours too, and thanks again for the video. Just my 0.02. You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
