Just want tmention that KZbinr Project Farm did a definitive oil test for the effects of time on several motor oils, which included a decades-old can of a name brand oil. He not only does his own mechanical wear testing, but he sends samples to an independent lab for their breakdown of chemical components. The end result is that time is not relevant to an oil's ability to protect engine parts. I am totally convinced.

I'd be bummed if I sent my carbs to someone and they came back with different sized bolts. That's why it's good to learn to clean your own carbs...which isn't too difficult thanks to people like Taylor who make instructional videos. I wonder about the DIY guys that were doing this 25+ years ago, before you could find parts and videos on line, before the days of internet forums and FB motorcycle groups. They had their manual and that was it... if they were lucky they had a mentor. For me, being able to watch a video before I jump into a job for the first time, makes all the difference. Sometimes I'll read the manual a dozen times but it's not until I see it done by someone else that I fully understand.

Hi Taylor, from the uk. I can understand not riding the bike, but don’t tinker with it, especially carbs that you don’t understand,( obviously as the jet was in the wrong way up and random screws replaced, probably lost the originals)makes me mad when people do this, someone comes along and tells the owner he’s an expert and can get the bike running right. Really. I think if she had just ridden it things would have been a lot better, but she probably didn’t realise that these older bikes need a bit of TLC. I remember when you built this bike and it’s great to see that with a bit of tidying up( please secure the battery, it bothers me) it’s going to be fine. Loved the little film out on the bike, the sound was just fine and the camera. What is your retro helmet mate, Bell? Is it quiet at speed? Channels really cool, love it. Your garage is getting smaller by the way😂👍🏻🏍🇬🇧
@daveco1270

I agree with you, Mike, but I must confess I bought my first bike in September (a 1975 Honda CB750) and decided to tinker with carbs that probably didn't need to be tinkered with. The bike was running great, but one carb had a very slight leak that two different mechanics told me I shouldn't worry about. It was more of seepage thing where the outside of the carb was wet from gas, but not dripping much. Against the mechanics advice I pulled the carbs off the bike to see if I could figure out what was going on. I had watched a ton of videos on carbs and read a bunch of forums, so I felt like I could figure it out, despite no previous knowledge of motorcycles. Plus... part of the reason I bought an old Honda was to learn how to do some of this stuff, so it was an experiment for educational purposes. I ended up replacing a gasket and all of the float needles which didn't seem very springy to me. When I put the carbs back on the bike the leak was fixed but it ran like total crap. Not sure what I did to screw it up. I was kicking myself for even attempting to mess with it. I took them off again did a thorough cleaning of all brass parts and passageways, readjusted a couple float heights and now it's running good again. I did a carb synch, but I'm not sure the air mixture screws are tuned as well as they could be. It's a work in progress. It's odd that the screws would be different now on the CB550. I'd be curious to know if she brought the bike somewhere or did the work herself. (Could someone have taken those screws for another project thinking she wouldn't notice if the ones on her bike didn't match? Seems odd that they would be lost. They weren't stripped when Taylor sold the bike, so they shouldn't have needed to be replaced. We need to get to the bottom of this mystery.)

I have 2 cb750k's a 75 and a 78. My 75 I have changed the cluch and springs, and the cluch feels super light compared to my 78 cb750. I also put heavy springs and stronger friction plates in. But I don't get any slipping. My 78 might have some shims behind the cluch springs making the cluch stronger and heavier to pull(old drag/street racing thing). Thought I would chime in on this because your 550 have a light and slipping cluch

What;'s with the right rear corner of the seat, it looks like the seat has a tear in it. Beings you are in Texas, I would have imagined you have run across an old-timer who worked on the oil rigs in the days when they ran generators and motorized roller mechanisms for turning the pumps and we never changed the oil in them, when they were running 24 hours a day, we would bypass the filter with plumbing and never shut that thing off and just replace the filter and add some oil if it needed it but never changed the oil at all in them and they ran for years without shutting down at all, on the same oil that it came to us from the factory on.Never had one breakdown in us either. So waste oil if you want to. Even synthetic is lasting for 15 to 20 thousand miles now. As advertised on the bottle/container. The carb still needs to be addressed or it might get stuck again on the road and then what are you going to do keep tapping it all the way home to take it apart? Or check that needle valve. Still need to balance/sync them again. Yep still needs to be synced.

If she rode it so little after buying it from you. And she had carb etc issues. Why not bring it back to you to do the repair? Instead she brought it to someone who didn't know it inside and out. Shame. 143 miles. Double shame.
