you missed something very important about why Nintendo DS and DSi were such a success. In poor countries or countries where we couldn't buy or afford buying game cartridges, sellers were offering homebrew cartridges with SD cards where you can download and play roms. this made the sales explode in countries where nintendo traditionally has no presence

This is a really good collection, but before the Game Boy Color there was also the Game Boy Pocket. This was a slimmed down version of the first Game Boy that required fewer batteries. There was also the Game Boy Light, which is essentially the Game Boy Pocket that had a backlit display and only released in Japan. Game Boy Micro was an interesting release and you can consider it the Game Boy Advance slim.

Just as an aside, the GBA SP had two different models. The AGS-001, which had a front-lit display, and the AGS-101, with a backlit one. Most people remember the latter, but I have the former. If you pressed the button with the sun on it, it essentially turned the screen into the original GBA’s. 🙂

Oh and the pocket, how could I forget that.

Not entirely true: the most common and most sold one is the 001, with a front-lit screen. The AGS-101 (backlit, much nicer screen) sold in smaller numbers and went on sale when the DS was already on the market. AGS-101's are much more expensive on the second hand market, because they are much harder to find. The difference is HUGE though and I think it's worth it. The SP in this video is a front-lit AGS-001, so small 'mistake' there. :)

I am a child of the very early 80s, and that original gameboy was my first handheld device. This video brought back so many memories as I haven't seen that thing in decades. Arun, my brothers and I were big into gaming, and there were some high end, expensive systems that were released in Japan around the same time that were significantly better than what we had in the U.S. My family bought them at a specialty gaming store in the late 80s or early 90s. One was Turbo Graphics 16 (or something like that). It had these really small cards that acted as the games, and this was when we had those large Nintendo and Sega Genesis cartridges (though the Sega's were a bit smaller as far as I remember. The graphics on that Turbo Graphics 16 was revolutionary. Also, the best handheld of all time was released around the same time, the Turbo Express, which was about the size of a gameboy but played the full fat turbo graphics 16 games. And it was color! It was amazing. Lastly, and the best system IMO ever released for its era, was the Neo Geo. It had these massive cartridges, but the graphics were like nothing that would be seen for years after. It felt like you were playing arcade games in your home, which was amazing at the time. Not sure if these things will ever make their way into a video, but trust me as someone who grew up at that time, they really changed the entire landscape of home gaming.

What's incredible to me is how I often would end up getting a new handheld system roughly every time I got a new Pokemon game. First the Gameboy with Pokemon Red, then the Gameboy Color with Pokemon Silver. My cousins got the GBA and then a year later got the SP so I got their old GBA and grabbed Pokemon Sapphire and Pokemon Firered. Then I got my DS Lite and with that came Pokemon Pearl, Pokemon SoulSilver and Pokemon White. My DS Lite was my go to for years and only briefly did I get a New 3DS XL (for Pokemon X of course) before finally getting the Switch for Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet and Arceus. The evolution of Nintendo handhelds was in many ways assisted by the Pokemon franchise.

Hey Arun, I'm here to correct you a little: The GBA SP had two versions. The one you showed is actually the frontlit AGS-001 model. Big N released a little later the AGS-101 model which was actually Backlit and was brighter than the model before (and I think it had a better speaker and more battery time but I'm not sure rn)

The 3DS and its variations had a lot of flaws and gimmicks that didn't really stick, but I have countless fond memories with that little system from when I was a kid. Considering I had the 3DS and the N64 growing up, I consider my Nintendo experience growing up to be very good.

I only ever got the n64, the Wii, the gbasp, and the original ds. I always wanted the other ds models and then the 3ds when that came out so bad, but we were always so poor, I'd be lucky if I could even get a new game. (I just found out about the "new 3ds XL" today and I definitely have to get it now)

My Nintendo childhood started with the Wii but more importantly the 2ds. It does kinda look gross and clunky, but it introduced me to pokemon, 3d Mario, animal Crossing, Kirby and donkey Kong. It still holds a special place in my heart.

Great video. I think you missed a couple. Like the Gameboy Pocket, the GBA Micro, and the New 2DS XL. They each had their own reasons for being notable but I can also understand why they might be easy to overlook. But beyond that it was a great video on the history and timeline of the big N's handhelds. Got my sub for it. Imma go watch your backlog as well. Keep it up.

I will say that he skipped over a couple of consoles that made the next generation console possible, but they were quick gimmicks, so it's fine. For instance, the Gameboy Pocket helped them arrange the components in a smaller case, to create the Gameboy Color. And the Gameboy Light was the first test of internal lighting, which would lend to the backlight of the Gameboy Advance SP.

Didn't know the original Game and Watch did so well. I used to read about it in the Nintendo Power magazines when I was a kid but didn't know much about it. The handheld market really held Nintendo down through the dark days of the 64 and gamecube and is propelling them forward with the Switch.

I've owned most of these since the original gameboy and honestly the biggest revolution for me was the gameboy advance sp that came with a backlit screen, no longer having to struggle with the weird little lamp you plug into the top of the gameboy and angle over the screen to stay up late and play in the dark after school 😅 (also easier to fold and hide so you can pretend to be asleep!) And these things were built to last, my old gameoy advannce sp still works perfectly today (with that tribal tattoo print of course, because that's what all the cool kids wanted)

2 errors he made : nintendo used the Palm Pilot stylus popularity for the DS, they didn't invent it. And SEGA Game Gear was a tough competitor to the game boy, before the game boy color came and finally outclassed the Sega Game Gear... the omission of the game gear in this video is the biggest flaw honestly. Even though not mentionning Palm Pilot as who made the tactile stylus gigantic before nintendo scooped it up is also a major flaw. 8/10 overall video on first watch
