PSN being free is extremely underrated especially back then when I was middle school/high school age. I spent most of my time playing online mutiplayer while my best friend who has a 360 played only single player games because he doesn't have the money or means to get gold. PS I also had a 360 but it red ringed and if I had it with gold for as long as I have been playing mutiplayer for that generation, I would have already spent way more than USD599 which is why with hindsight I'm glad I got the PS3.

21:53 the ylod of death has nothing to do with overheating. It has to do with the fact that the gpu in the ps3 used improper bump solder material that would get to soft from the constant hot and cold and eventually the chip would break connection with the board. The same problem was what caused the red ring of death. It was known as bump gate and was a widespread issue with electronic devices in the mid 2000s. Later model systems don’t have this issue because the new gpus were made with proper material this time that can handle the temperatures

After purchasing it, my dad and I clutched the bag tightly as we trudged through the mall to tell my mother and sister that we were bringing it home and would come back. 2:26 I wouldn't call Microsofts debut console outselling the Nintendo console of the generation by millions of units only a modest success.

The YLOD and RRoD were *NOT* related to high temperatures. It was related to newly developed lead-free RoHS-compliant solder being used in many products at the time. This included: the 360, the PS3, Nvidia's mobile GPUs, and more. The solder cracked as a function of the number of thermal cycles from room temperature to operating temperature and had *ZERO* to do with "overheating" or the actual temperature... anything operated at. The solder would have cracked if the system operated 15 degrees cooler. It would have cracked if it operated much at all above ambient temperature. This is a myth that's been debunked for over a decade.

I'm currently using a CFW CECHA01 PS3 with a 1tb SSD replacement(the literal maximum that the PS3 can use), and a 500gb Thumb Drive for additional storage. Have the original PS3 DualShock 3 for it, but also have a Brook Wingman adapter that allows almost any Bluetooth/USB controller to function with the PS3 as if it were an official DS3(including the PS button). For those times when a friend comes over and they REALLY want to use an XBox controller, for whatever reason. And if you connect a DS5 to it, the Wingman will even translate the motion sensor to the PS3 as full sixaxis. For those thinking of going this route for storage, an SSD does not actually improve performance. The OS is stored on the console itself, so will always run at the same speed(the additional storage space just means it will continue to run at that speed even when half the drive is full). As for loading of games, still no performance increase as the PS3 uses SATA connections(you can get laptop SSDs with SATA connectors for upgrading older model laptops), which limit the speed that data can be transferred. All the SSD would do is allow the data to be transferred at the maximum speed that SATA can transfer(which honestly isn't much faster than a standard SATA HDD). Plus, less moving parts. HDD replacements are quite a bit cheaper, for about the same performance. For those on a budget. The only reason I went with 1tb is because I store the backup ISO/BIN files directly on the drive. Which, for PS3 games, takes up a LOT of space. But it means I'm not constantly popping the physical disc in and out of the system(especially for older PS1 multi-disc games). The only part of my setup I would consider almost required is the Wingman. As replacement DS3 controllers are notoriously hard to get. So many people selling fake ones(DKOldies). And Sony has a hard-on about blocking anything third party from working with their consoles. Or limiting the functionality to the absolute bare minimum. The Wingman circumvents that by tricking the PS3 into thinking that you have a DS3 connected via USB. And then the PS3 stops asking questions after that. And yes, for BC models, the Wingman will even fool that into working too, because PS3 enthusiasts all know that only the official DS3 will work for the PS2 mode. The ONLY drawback being, you can't "wake" the system from the controller. As the USB ports are turned off when the system is powered down.

Can you use a Bluetooth headphone with the adapter ?
@TrexelCat5 ай бұрын
@@Crimsongz Unfortunately, no. The adapter was only designed to translate not PS3 controllers into something the PS3 thinks is a PS3 controller.

The PS3 CPU being theoretically more/as powerful than the PS4 CPU isn't a testament to the CBE as much as it is an indictment of how poorly AMD was doing before Zen.

These were impossible at launch to get. I was 14 and my mom would always take me to gamestop after she went shopping for me to look around at the new games. I was there as they recieved an order of PS3s and was able to split a 60gb with my brother as eachothers xmas gifts. Such a great memory.

It was the "failure" of the PS3 that forced Ken Kutaragi to resign from his position as the "Father of the Playstation". In retrospect, considering the push of the original, the 2, and the 3, his departure is why Sony's consoles began to meekly move forward. Also, I thought the PS2 was the incarnation of the Cell chips.

I was in the military when the PS3 came out. Most of us didn’t come from strong financial lives so after a deployment (being young and single) you would have thousands in the bank. This girl I was on and off with told me “here’s 5,000 go get me a new tv, surround sound , stand and a ps3 mainly for the blue ray…I remember it took a day to get everything together hooked it up and found out you needed and hdmi cord which at least the first ps3 didn’t come with yet. I found one at Best Buy and it was 75$!!! But when I turned on that first blue ray movie it was so stunning. I don’t remember the exact tv specs and this it was a flat screen but still a bit heavy. Anyways she let me get the newest madden for payment but it was just awesome to be able to set it all up and I’m still the go to guy for stuff like that in my house now

The yellow light was caused by cooling problems because of years dust build up. If you cleaned your PS3 annually this was preventable. My 60 gig ps3 died after about 4 years. After opening it up the build up dust amount was nuts. In 2012 I purchased a slim. When it was my main console I cleaned out the dust annually and that console is still running.

PS3 was the best console ever MADE. PS2/1 backwards compatibility and ready? FREE MULTIPLAYER (Yea I'm looking at you Xbox 360 and pretty much Sony & Xbox in the next generations 😢)

Nice that Sony replaced Ken’s PS3 after YLOD, My PS5 died 1 DAY after the 1 year warranty was up and they wanted £275 to replace it. Lost it over the phone, deleted my playstation account, cut my losses and game on PC now instead.

I had the 80gb Motorstorm bundle and definitely had backwards compatibility. Funnily enough, I worked at Best Buy when the PS3 released and my mom came in and bought one for me that December for a Christmas gift not knowing I was working the registers that day. She just said "Ah hell, just at surprised Christmas morning." 😂

Well actually the reason for YLOD and RROD is not the solder between the GPU and Boards, it was the seal betweeh the GPU dies and the GPU board, which would become soft at 70C. PS3s lasted more than 360s because they ran cooler, but they all failed eitherway. Later models use fixed GPUs that don't have the low temperature seal
