I heard and saw so many good things about that camera store and would love to visit and something from it some day. Specially curious about the Leica floor :) Happy for you having such a great time travelling and having the opportunity to shoot so many photos! Curious what you will come up with ideas when you are back home :)

Did you get that at Map Camera? Just curious. If so I think you can trust the lens is priced according to a fair evaluation of it, which would indicate that the looseness is the reason for the good price. Just guessing though. I don't know what that lens sells for here; never checked. Edit: Oh! I see you did get it at Map Camera. I think 90% of everything in my camera bag is from there. Love them.

I bought that lens too but I was previously aware of the two annoying things about it: loose aperture ring and loose pieces inside when lens turned off. It seems to be a general characteristic of the lens, nothing technically wrong, I just hate it even if I do not feel the lens like cheep built. This is one of the flagship lenses from Fujifilm among others such as 23 and 33 f/1.4 WR. Some say it is the sharpest one, I cannot say because is my first f/1.4 WR but I can say I can see clearly the difference from other Fujifilm lenses I own such as 23mm f/2 or 16-80 f/4. I can see myself agreeing with some of your concerns about weight and the how "why not change to full frame" but the fact is this seems to be the only way for some of us (Fuji fan boys) remain loyal to the brand when time comes to step up to more professional usage of (generally) APSC. I started with Fujifilm because I do love the more tactile usage experience, it is true that I did also love the "smaller" form factor of my kit with the Fujicrons (16, 23, 50mm f/2) but moving more professionally either one sells everything and changes to full frame or, we start to understand that the latest glass and sensors from Fujifilm are very close to full frame quality wise and still cheaper than some f/4 glass on full frame. And I’m not speaking about Fujifilm color or film simulations. This type of lens is for someone who wants more clinical images but keeping in mind that holds a camera that can work on a more "analog" and funny way when desired and, making sense, with smaller or even manual lenses. Of course I’m speaking about me who owns a xpro3, I enjoy quite frequently the optical viewfinder, some manual focus lenses, to play with the dials…when I’m on travelling mode. When I want to get more serious, I can use the 18mm f/1.4 (or in a walk at night) and this lens doesn’t kill the Fujifilm magic to me at all. If I was a x-h2 user or xt-5 and maybe I would think twice but even there, honestly, I couldn’t find on other brands a 28mm f/2 full frame lens that paired with a body would give me the same versatile and sharp results has this lens on Fujifilm. Maybe… and that’s a maybe… the Leica Q3 with the summilux 28 f/1.7 ASPH but I would be stuck in one (only) focal length and paying 4 times more.

Just got the 23 1.4 for under €600 new and been blown away by the build quality, it feels like a whole different category than my Sigma 18-50. I don't get why Fuji doesn't update the aperture ring on the 18, feels so weird to have this criticism from every reviewer for years now, it would only take them a slight tweak in manufacturing to make the aperture ring exactly as the one on the 23 and 33 1.4. I use it on an X-S20 and haven't found the size to be big tbh, it's still very compact and natural

My 18mm ap ring is not loose at all, it's actually pretty clicky with some good resistance to it.

I just acquired the 14/2.8 and the ring is very loose too, bought new. I honestly think their build quality consistency even under the same model of lens within the brand is all over the place. I bet there are stiff aperture rings on the 14/2.8 as well as variants with looser ones. I think they have even publicly announced this as something they want to address moving forward.

Good. It’s messy from them

No, I had the 14 f2.8 as well. I wish I kept it. The aperture ring was loose. From what I've always known it was a common complaint with this lens. Beautiful image quality though. I might revisit the lens.

The 18mm is a little too wide for me :) but on the test chart it is probably fujis best lens (granted you'd be hard pressed to tell with the naked eye) back in the day when visiting a city (New York comes to mind) I did shoot with the 18mm F/2 and 35mm F/1.4 as I've got older my carry kit swapped to a 23mm & 56mm . (the following has no relation to the video ) To be honest even with my studio photography, I could probably do 99% with my X100 VI and not need another camera/lens but the hardest part is justifying keeping a 23mm F/1.4 when I love the X100VI so much.... I will do as there are drawbacks to the X100 VI (although the only one that would matter, is if I am shooting an event where I want to make sure no data is lost, the dual card slots is just piece of mind. but in the studio, that doesn't matter. I've never had a card fail and if it did, I'd just shoot again... the only other slight annoyance is you can't tether the X100 VI

Hi Jay. I’m enjoying your travel videos. I’ve been wanting this lens for a while. In fact, I’ve been shooting with my 18-55mm at 18 to see if I really like the focal length. I have the 16mm f/2.8 already but I think the 18mm f/1.4 LM WR would be better for video and low light photography. I’ve heard the same thing about that 18mm aperture ring being a bit loose, much more so than the 23mm f/1.4 LM WR which has good damping and solid clicks. For now I’ll use the 23mm. Cheers!

The 90 is a smokin' good lens. I am so glad I bought it. I use it for many things including wildlife and sports. It rarely disappoints! I was very patient and very luck to get one barely used, still with six months on the warranty for under $500 U.S. Just love it!!

I think many people have missed the design concept of the xt-5 and 18 1.4. compaired to the xt-3 and 16-55 or such they seem lose, soft. ECT however they are more designed like hydrolic in feel and force needed. Smoth and easy to adjust one handed, dampened and near silent yet still positive in each step.

Own 18mm f1.4 among others but to be honest 16mm f1.4 produced better images.18 is fine lens if you like sharp and sterile image.

Buyer’s remorse 😢 Superfast AF lenses have to be big. Can’t cheat physics. Back in the day, f2 was fast enough. Plenty Quality svelte lenses to be had at that aperture. People gripe about the weight of chunky Viltrox f/1.2 pro lenses.
