The big problem with Wish and other similar retailers like Shein is that they steal images and creations from real creators and designers then make them as cheaply as possible, trying to mimic the design, for a fraction of the price - that's why some of the items don't look like the pictures.
@singenstattatmen5096
@singenstattatmen5096 2 жыл бұрын
With wish, sure, but with Shein you do actually get what's on the picture. Low quality? Yes. Needs ironing before it looks like the photo? Sure. But at least they really are the actual clothes, which is probably why Shein is so damn popular. 🤷

I learned that almost every time when a "model's" face has only the top part cut out it usually is the case. Because if they tried to cut the head entirely the picture would look weird and not pleasing at all (it usually falls into the uncanny valley for some reason, when you feel that something is off with that picture). So what I tell people that buy clothes online, specially historical, is never buy from sellers that have pictures with just the top of the head of the person on the photo cut out. And also, if you can, try to find the person whose photo it is and let them know, because maybe they'll want to take action against that.
@singenstattatmen5096
@singenstattatmen5096 2 жыл бұрын
@@unhappyoption5910 Ah yes I can absolutely see that happening and it sucks (one of the many things that suck about fast fashion). All I meant to say is, at least they're not a complete scam: They do actually make (or rather mass-produce) the clothes, have models wear them and take their pics and then sell them. So they don't straight out lie to their buyers like many others. Doesn't free them from doing a whole lot of shady shit, of course, and stealing other people's designs is surely just the tip of the iceberg.

one of the first things I read about cosplay online was when the LOTR movies came out and I wanted to be an elf and the page I was looking at said something that applies to so many things in life-- you can have it cheap, you can have it good, or you can have it quick-- pick two, but you can't have all three. If you want to make costumes that are good and cheap, you're going to have to dedicate a lot of time to trying to source fabrics secondhand, do a lot of hunting, experimenting with your own patterns if you can't afford to buy them, doing a lot of research before you buy things. It's possible! But like they elf cosplay page said, you cant have all three.

A thing I learned from that Bernadette Banner's video is that a lot of times when this listings show "models" with the top half of their face cut out it is usually because that photo is stolen from the social media of someone that is actually a reenactmentor or a recreator (aka someone that actually has our hobby and did that dress just for themselves only to have their creation stolen by this companies). They cut their faces in weird ways because of they tried cutting their heads entirely the picture would be weird. So beware of any page that has pictures like that. And if you find one, maybe try finder the person that had their photo stolen to let them know, because only they can contact the platform on which the sale is being made to remove their photo so the company stops this false advertisement .

using thrifty sheets and curtains for basic shapes that don't require a pattern allows you to develop your sewing skills too. Some of those we still see on the beach.

For pretty much every time period there is a quite cheap option. With recycled cotton or linen in neutral colours and just a bit of work on getting the right headwear and shoes, one can go really far with very little money. Greeks/Romans ? Usually the simplicity of the construction allows for "just finding a nice slightly sheer linen or cotton curtain and draping it" (many tutorials on YT). Celts ? A recycled linen/cotton beige tunic, second hand simple linen trousers knotted at the ankles and a plaid woollen blanket, super easy ! Put some effort in the shoes though. Easy to make yourself actually ! Medieval ? A nun or monk for example can go with brown and white thick cotton bedsheets for probably not even 100 € (think second hand or sales) and a week-end sewing. Similar for a pilgrim. Switch the black for any earthy, simple colour and you get a handcrafter or little merchant. Do your research for the headwear (oftentimes a straw hat of the right shape or well knotted kerchief will do). Renaissance ? Again, think monks, nuns, and why not the accused witch with just a dirty shift and the right headcap. Same materials and basis, add a few weeks of sewing, you get a decent farmer's or handcrafter's outfit. Put effort into the headwear ! 1700s ? Forget the nobility, go for a colon or less wealthy person and the world of printed bedsheets is at your feet ! Be a bit attentive to construction and shape and you're there. Also simple black leather shoes with a square front will do the trick. Empire ? Lightweight recycled white cotton and correct draping with a nice ribbon for a high waist and you're done. Do your research and then go nuts with the hairstyles. Harder for the gents though. Victorian ? A poofy fake butt is super easy to make (out of rags) and will do the trick for any kind of bump enhancement (not fully for the bustle eras, but close enough and better than nothing). Maxi skirts (second hand) for petticoats and a simple long skirt of any simple or printed heavy cotton you can find (tablecloths are your best friends for heavy fall). Classic blazer, change a few details (buttons, decorations). Hairstyle. Done Edwardian ? Same skirt situation as before, without the bump enhancement. Simple too big light blouse, gather on the shoulders, make a higher collar, add buttons. Brooch at the throat. Hairstyle.

The 18th Century gown specifically reminds me of Bernadette's video from a while ago. Wish operation as follows: - Find a single beautiful photo from a real creator (who probably spent hundreds of hours and lots of money of said project). - Steal it. - Wait for an order. - Hurriedly throw together a rough lookalike with no understanding/underpinnings/time/fabric/money and send it on. - Profit. I just feel sorry for the poor workers who are made to construct clothing (based on as little as one picture), with no time and are probably paid nearly nothing for it.

I refuse to contribute to possible slave labor or poor work conditions that probably exsit because no factory is going to have smoke on products they send out. Say it with me people, if it is cheap, someone didn't get paid! Yes the material is cheap but also the people making it didn't get a proper pay or were not payed at all (look up the wage theft in the fashion industry that happened during the pandemic years). Fast fashion companies cut corners everywhere they possibly can to make things as cheaply as possible and that includes safe work environment for the workers and a decent, liviving pay. Make informed decisions when you shop. Nothing is disposable. Not everyone can afford to buy fairtrade all the time (myself included) but be mindful when you're browsing sites like Shein and Zaful, Zara, H&M ect and ask yourself, do I really need it? is this really worth it?

I do a lot of sewing because I'm oddly-proportioned and have a terrible time finding off-the-rack clothes that fit. And yes, it can be horribly expensive, especially if you like nice fabrics in natural fibers. But I can afford the occasional new "luxury" fabric by buying about 90% of my fabric secondhand, be it in the form of unused yardage, curtains, tablecloths, bedsheets, blankets, duvet covers, or even existing garments. I buy thread, sewing machine needles, notions, and other sewing supplies the same way. It does take time, however, to find all of this stuff cheaply, which is another resource I know is in short supply for a lot of people.
@skengels

It depends. Making things like men's boxers, denim jeans are NOT worth it. High skill set, complicated sewing, yardage cost, time consuming, etc. But if you find the right site to get fabric, or buy second hand/discounted it can be VERY worth it. I just made myself a linen wrap skirt for what amounted to $15 in yardage (I bought on sale + a discount lol), which would go for around $60 handmade on etsy, for 1.5 hrs of labor. I used to make undergarments and that was very worth it as well for me. When I was first started sewing is a WHOLE other story though, I bought nice fabrics and completely, unsalvageabley ruined everything I made... haha....

Any building trade or medical related will stay in demand and pay well after you're qualified. Old houses and people will always be around. @@michellebyrom6551 Thank you for taking the time, that is very thoughtful of you ! But I should have specified, I am french so it's not really the degree or the price in itself that is the problem but the fact that we don't get picked directly by universities. We have to go through an independent organisation that then uses an algorithm to sort us out, it's very vague, very complicated and most of the time people have trouble figuring out how they got where they are. And then there are unfortunate people like me with quirky profiles so the algorithm rules us out right from the beginning... That being said, I am aware we are extremely fortunate to not pay fortunes to attend universities like it is the case in some other countries. I don't exactly know how it works, does having a degree from an expensive university makes any difference once one starts working ? We do agree crazy expensive private schools in France (most are business schools), but it's mostly for people who have money to burn and wants their child to be pampered, it doesn't make any difference...

I'm sorry you didn't get accepted, the feeling is awful. when I failed my admission I felt like I've been thrown off from a third floor. I don't know how things work over there, or at which stage you're in life, perhaps you already have kids and suggesting you take this forced gap year for traveling is a little difficult😅, but try to make the most of it. Wether it is getting a job, taking lessons of something you like, just for the sake of it, use this time for something. Everything will fall in place at the right time, that's what happened to me.

I imagine the cheapest way to get historical costumes would be to just make them yourself. It'll definitely take time to learn how to do that and get good at using a sewing machine, but basic sewing machines can be found for under $100 and you can get fabric on sale/clearance as well as from places like thrift stores (buying curtains and sheets).

It’s only “cheaper” if you don’t factor in the hours of sewing,researching, etc you must spend so if you don’t need to earn an income it’s cheaper but free labor -even your own isn’t really free.

@@ayannahendricks6266 I mean yes, youre spending time instead of money. But if you dont have that money, then your choices are either to spend that time learning a new skill/hobby (garment making) or, I guess, spending the time you wouldve spent learning working more to make more money to pay for someone else to make it. Personally I think it'd be really cool to be able to make one's own clothes, as it gives you the freedom to make whatever you want. It'll be unique and quality.

Natural fibers are more dangerous to get around fire. Polyester will just melt, it's not likely to take on the fire, unlike cotton for example.
@snazzypazzy
@snazzypazzy 2 жыл бұрын
@@boreum789 Have you ever held a piece of polyester next to a flame? Because once it catches it goes up in seconds and will indeed melt. And in melting it will almost fuse with your skin creating some of the worst burns that are very hard to clean. (And cleaning burns is essential because the are notoriously quick to get infected.) Cotton (or cellulose in general) will indeed go up in flame fairly quickly, that is true, and it will burn more like a candle. But it doesn't melt to skin, making it a tad more safe. Wool is even harder to set on fire, often creating a smolder that's easy to end. Look, it's generally best not to set you clothes on fire as you wear them, no matter what they are made from. That's just uncomfortable. But if I had to chose I'd put synthetics last always.

You should do a video, if you have time, where you try and fix the clothes you bought. Where you try and alter them so that they are more accurate or maybe if it's something that's horrible try and turn it into just a skirt or an apron or something from the fabric. I feel like that would be a fun idea, save the clothes from being wasted and save money on fabric.

The problem with trying to reuse the "fabric" is that it's so thin it shreds very easily. When the pink dress ripped, that wasn't the stitching ripping, it was the fabric, since it was cut at an angle it was extremely weak. Some of it is better, it depends on the dress, but for the most part it'd be better used with glue, like you could glue a layer of it over something just for decorative purposes, but that's not really cutting waste much. These costumes don't stand up to one wear usually, & quite often are damaged already when you receive them. Think the worst fabric on like Halloween decorations, it's no where near garment quality. The more "normal" clothing is usually slightly better fabric, like the "Victorian underwear" she got, that could maybe be reused but is still not likely to hold up to much.
@ashleysummers2143
@ashleysummers2143 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlueRoseFaery I notices that to. I'm a novice at sewing so I could be incorrect, but if you add inner under layer won't that help? It might not make the fabric better quality but couldn't you use the fabric as even a middle layer between others? Or maybe use it as a quick cheap trim if you cut it into strips and plead it? Or maybe use the skirt part of the pink dress to make small quick things or use it maybe test stitching. I don't know like I said I'm not the most informed. Or maybe cut it up and put it in a hoop for needle point?

...I stretched slightly at my desk one morning, bit of a noise, didn't think much of it, my spine makes noises. Yeah, when I got home, I discovered there was an 8" long rip right down the center back of my decidedly not cheap work shirt. Not at a seam, right down the fabric. It was a role with a lot of walking round to other peoples' desks, and I had one of those kneeling chairs with no backrest at the time, so everyone would have seen it. Did anyone say a word? Did they hell.

I had a pair of "pirate" pants (just jersey fabric in that wide leg-long cuff cut) that was bought second-hand. It was kinda tight around my thighs but it wasn't a big deal since it still fit. Until one day when I sat with my legs apart (good ol' manspreading pose) and heard a long ripping sound. The whole crotch seam was gone, just unsalvagable. It basically became edwardian drawers with that split crotch.
