Here's a guy who loves cars and had a specific car in mind for all the right reasons. He did his research, cast his net, did the leg work, and hooked the right one. I'm so happy this video exists. This man is keeping car culture alive in the truest sense of the word, and for all the right reasons.

I bought a used 2008 Cayman S w/17,000 miles on it back in Jan 2013 for $39.9K. It is a weekend driver...and I utterly LOVE it! And my experience was somewhat similar to yours-- saw the car at a Porsche dealership in Scottsdale, AZ. So I negotiated on the phone and flew down to do a final inspection and pull the trigger...One of the best moves I've ever made. My Cayman S still has only 37K miles on it. Have a BLAST with your new 911S!!!!

Congrats! Very similar to my story. The Porsche was always my dream car and I knew someone whose client had a Porsche with just over 28,000 miles on it for sale. It was owned by a woman who bought it for a weekend toy, but hardly used the car, hence the low miles. It is a 996, but I've had it for over six years and it runs smooth as silk and is still in pristine condition. My dream car actually materialized, glad to see yours did too!

Nice car! I bought a unicorn-spec 997.1 C4S with a complete maintenance history from the other side of the state and drove it over 500 miles the next day. It’s always worth traveling for the right car. It got home without any problems whatsoever. In addition to the previously mentioned advice regarding the low temp t-stat, always warm up the engine gently before putting a heavy load on it. Keep it below 3000rpm and don’t lug it until the oil temp is just north of 200 degrees. This will minimize the chance of bore scoring.

Congrats man! I was originally looking for a 997.1-S (05-06 because they're a bit easier to service than 07-08...supposedly), but came across an '09 Cayman S (987.2, Sports Cronos, manual...pretty rare for '09) I couldn't pass up. No regrets. I was in Cincinnati at the time too, now in Chicago, and flew down to Houston. Driving back, I got super familiar with the car...a little more than 1000 miles! I think these mid-late 2000's cars (Cayman and 911) are a steal right now, offer more convenience than you might imagine, and really have become the ideal daily driver sports car. To anyone on the fence, pull the trigger. You won't regret it!

This was great to watch! I'm glad you love it! I just sold my 2006 997 Carrera S 3 months ago (silver, manual, sports chrono, sport seats) at 59k miles. I bought mine 3 years ago for $33k and sold it for $35k to a dealership so it wasn't a bad deal for me. I put about 20k miles on it and it was super special. I only sold it to try something new. Bullet proof 911 though, never had a single problem and I love the sound of that 3.8 liter flat 6. You get so much performance for the money at $30k.

Honestly as long as it stays mostly stock it should as long as you keep the miles below 100k. I think it has to do with it being one of the last NA engines left aside from the 991 engines since they are putting turbos in most everything now. The 997 S w/ manual is such a great recipe for fun.
@JulietPapaRV127 жыл бұрын
Great clip, I feel what you feel, brother (or rather felt) as I bought the same car, same model S, same year 2006 for the same price (around $30K) just about 2 years ago. Mine had 95K on odometer and was deemed in excellent shape per the pre-purchase inspection. I put 10 K on it so far, only one problem, water pump died but it's normal given the mileage according to my mechanics who is a Porsche specialist. I kept my daily Ford Edge which explains my relatively low yearly mileage because this 911 is not a very practical car for daily usage (tough suspension, noisy, limited visibility for backing-up)... but it's a 911, a dream car that will give you so much fun when you drive it hard... and such a pleasure just watching it, sitting in the garage or on a parking lot and you will think: it's the only one of this kind around here, not everybody's car, not to be own or driven by any nobody, no Sir, owning it makes you somebody, just look at the envy in the eyes of the people watching you driving by!

Congrats! A great car ! I own the 2005 997 Carerra S, i have had it for 3 years now. I have some good tips for you about maintenace and easy up-grades that protects your 3.8 liter a little bit more. 1. Change oil every 5000 miles ! VERY IMPORTANT ! And use 5W-40 ! Not 0W-40 My personal Choice is Valvoline Synpower 2. Buy a spin-on oil filter adapter lnengineering.com/products/oil-change-bundles/oil-change-bundle-configurable.html , and get rid of the original cartridge filter, much better oil flow and filtering as you can use Syntetic spin-on filters like Royal Purple or Amsoil. it will take about 10 minutes to make the Upgrade. 3. A must have in my opinion is also the Low-temp. thermostat lnengineering.com/products/other-watercooled-stuff/cooling/160f-low-temperature-thermostat-insert-only-use-tool-106-062-to-remove-install.html , the factory thermostat doesn't start to even open until 186.8F and doesn't fully open until almost 210F This causes hotspots inside your engine that can result in cracked heads and cylinder failures from overheating. Also, little known is the fact that oil temperatures usually run 10-15F higher than coolant temperature in engines equipped with oil to coolant heat exchangers. Installation of a 160F low temperature thermostat lowers coolant temperatures which lowers oil temperatures. And can help to prevent Bore scoring. 4. Check for RMS leak, between the gearbox and engine, if a little wet there its nothing to worry about, but keep and eye on it, and if you someday should change the clutch, have the RMS changed With the upgraded Seal. 5. As a preventive maintenance, its advisable to change the water pump every 4 years 6. Every 2 years take off the bumper and clean the radiators, you can find information about this easy if you google .
@EatSleepDrive7 жыл бұрын
A ton of great information here, thanks for sharing and I hope it helps others out who are new owners. Interesting your point about thermostat. This is my first Porsche but I was shocked at the cruising temp of the oil. I had to google it to see what others were experiencing and I was relieved to see that this was 'normal' at least for the car. I'll look into a low temp thermostat.

All good info. EatSleepDrive, try to read www.hartech.org/images/downloads/Hartech%20Engine%20Guide%20(interim).pdf and you will Thermostat recommendation verified on p.42. Hartech are the engine gurus in the UK and they actually recommend Millers Nanotech NT(+) 10W-50 annually as a minimum. 996s are actually slightly more reliable than 997.1 S. However, all great cars.

In my experience, 5W-40 holds Down to -25 degree, and for 997 that have some miles on it 5W-40 its a good Choice according to oil consumption, i have in house experience With Mobil 1 0W-40, my car swallowed oil, after switch to 5W-40 oil consumption dropped With jaw-dropping effect

Congrats!! Taking a Porsche on a road trip is so much fun. @1:55 what a relief to see it’s a manual. My Boxster is a manual and that was a requirement when I bought it. It was located in Virginia and I was in Missouri at the time. That’s funny, I used to live in NC and I bought my wrangler in Wilmington. I agree @8:26. I bought a 2006 C2S for $27k in 2015. The car was a good condition but had 91k miles on it. 6MT of course... I went through the car thoroughly, fixed everything these was to fix, put FVD full Exhaust (including headers and Sport cats) on it, put a lot of interior CF pieces, repainted the front (rock chips), put a full PPF, put PSS9 on it etc, etc. Total repair and upgrades bill: $26k. sold the car after a year for $37k. The guy that bought it got himself a poor man’s GT3 for less than $40k (the car dynoed at 345WHP after the tune, Exhaust and intake upgrades). Loved that car! Second built car of all (35+ now) I have ever owned. Second only to my 1998 LS400 which was bullet proof. The only consolation was that I replaced my 911 with a 2014 R8 V10 6MT. Enjoy!!

Just found your channel, great video. I have owned three 911S's over many years and have had a great experience with each one. Not only that, I sold them for more than I paid for them, without trying. I'm searching for my next 911 now, either a 997.2 or 991.1. There are numerous 991.1's coming on the local market from lease returns. And like you stated in your video, the asking price difference between models is not that much. So, I've got my eyes and ears wide open! Good luck with your 997, you'll love it the more you drive it.

A very good video, I’m a car guy also and have been fortunate to have owned many high performance cars over the years and have settled on the Porsche 911 for many reasons. I like cars that are a good value as well as fun to drive, reasonable maintenance costs are important also. The 911 checks all the boxes. Currently I own a 2001 996 C2 6 speed, a 2005 997 S tiptronic and a 2014 Cayenne Turbo so I’m all in with Porsche. The 996 is so much fun to drive because it’s the most analog of the two 911’s, unfortunately I have a knee problem which limits my driving that car. I love the 997, those who knock the Tiptronic should drive one before making up their minds, it’s a very good transmission. A well sorted older 911 is a pleasure to own and drive.

So you didn’t want a PPI to check for rev over runs, and also to check the bores as these engines seem to suffer more from scored bores than IMS issues IMO and the fix is an expensive rebuild circa 8-10k. The common fragility’s appear to have been resolved in the 997.2 engine and hence there holding their values much better.

Did you consider the maintenance history. When was the water pump replaced. At 75,000 miles if it has not been replaced it will fail soon. Great buy. Love it. I have owned a 2003 996 Cab for five years.

Got the cayman S instead, that I push a lot on the HWY in Texas. Since I drive Porsches, I cry everytime I have to drive another car (I have a Prius, a Beemer, an Audi, a Maserati and a Mercedes). Those cars handle anything. Next car will be again a Porsche most likely.

7:06 Pilot Mountain in the rear view. That's so cool! I recognize that stretch from driving back and forth from my hometown, Raleigh, to Cleveland where I am at for school. There's a great stretch of twisties up in WV on your way to Ohio.

Purchase cost and drivers experience are unbelievable, all the tiny little maintenance items over just a few years drove me nuts. Glad to have owned one, but went back to a newer Audi that I could modify and had all the creature comforts

Oh look, Pilot Mtn in the background at 7:05. You're headed up I52. Not too far from me. Great car! Congrats

I had a 997 Carrera S then moved onto the 991 Carrera S. I miss the raw mechnical engine noise in the cabin of the 997. You don't get that mechnical noise when just sitting at the lights in the 991.

Excellent video! This is also my realistic dream car. Saving each month so I can hopefully buy one by summer 2019!

Congrats! I know what you are talking about after driving a Porsche. I still have my first one an 1988 951. My daily is a 09 Cayenne GTS or 957. I cannot own any other car. The 997 is on my list of to purchase. Hard to get rid of the V8, and the sound the GTS makes. Plus, I can town the motorcycle with easy. Have the factory town kit, and 7700 TC is amazing. evelyn is dead on with oil changes, and swapping out for the spin-on filter. Great find. Enjoy with miles.

A friend of ours just picked up an '06 C4S and he loves it! We had an 06 Boxster and I think one of the nicest additions from the 996 is PASM. Great for our crummy side roads here in Colorado ;). Just cut open the oil filter if you are worried about the IMS, but the failure rates in the latter 06 is super low. Love the sound! Congrats on your super cool new car! P-cars are awesome :)

Echoing what EatSleepDrive says, this is a fantastic car! I just picked up a '07 Carrera S 6speed manual in October. Looks just like the car in this video except I have the Sports Chrono package - turn on that and you can wake up the entire neighborhood. I assume that yours is also Atlas Grey? This is an unbelievably beautiful color that changes colors depending on the lighting. In twilight or early morning with the sun it looks navy blue. On overcast days, it looks grey or black. I also heard that on non-turbos, this was a $3.6K option! Therefore, it's a very rare color. So far, so good for me. Wishing you the best with your new choice and I hope you keep it for a while! Merry Christmas all...

I believe the car to be Atlas Grey as well although rather embarrassingly I can't find the paint code on the car. It is a fantastic color though and I didn't know it was such an expensive option! Thanks for sharing.
@jerrydelcannon94587 жыл бұрын
I haven't confirmed the cost of the paint option but I saw someone on Rennlist posted that cost. Regardless, it's a beautiful color and a tremendous car. BTW, I've been driving 5 series Bimmers, including my current car a '07 530i with sports, premium and cold weather packages + a 6 sp manual. Seriously nice car but the Carrera S is just another level of driving. Too bad it's so frickin' cold.... I'm stuck driving my Outback for the next few weeks until it warms up.

Very nice! Congrats on the new car. I think you are right a 997 manual hard top with black interior is a great buy and will hold it's value. Especially a Carrera S with the fantastic wheel and brake combination! Enjoy

Your lucky you have a dark interior. I notice the light colors seem to chip and crack and go ugly. Mine is a 2006 and the black interior looks NEW with 60,000 miles on her.
