I'm Molly, a typical sushi, makeup, and fashion loving millennial girl who just so happens to be blind! I was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at just 4 years old and began public speaking at age 5. I started just doing motivational speaking, but now I make videos and even model! Even though I can’t see, I know that there are bright spots in everything we face. Let’s find them together. 💕

As a contractor I want to warn you , you need to plan for double the time that your contractor says. Hopefully you will be able to move in January, however, things rarely go as planned when renovating. Renovations to be extremely frustrating when you hit snags. I’m not saying these things to try to be negative… I just think you need to be emotionally prepared for the bumps in the road. When you hit those bumps, just remind yourself “it’ll all be OK in the end”.

I agree, as a homeowner who has done renovations. We have been waiting for three months now for the materials for our shower renovation. The workers are ready but getting all the materials has been delayed, so I'll be happy if it gets done this year. I've learned that renovating and building are like flying, I'm just happy when I'm not waiting.

Especially important to keep in mind right now. Everything involved in renovations seems to be twice as hard to source right now and are also twice as expensive as a result. Patience and flexibility are the key to staying sane during a renovation right now.

Yes, and also plan for double the budget. I’m not sure what the situation is in the US, but in the UK construction materials are lacking and they’ve doubled in price in the last six months. Not to mention the challenges that can happen along the way. Oh and the fact that you tend to want the best things for your own home, so you’ll usually prefer the most high end things.

How did you get started in design and architecture? I'm so curious, would love to hear a bit of your story with that :) if you don't mind :) because I'd love to study that but it seems unattainable thus far.
@catattack141

@@katryanaorange2092 I'll be honest, it is a long road for sure, but totally worth it when you get to see what you pictured in your head come to life. You have to love it. It's not a field you can give 50 percent effort because it is demanding. Your ideas, which usually come from an emotionally vulnerable place, are out there for critique, so you have to develop a thick skin. I did a 5 year bachelor of architecture program (although not many 5 year programs left in the US) or you can do a 4 year undergrad + 2 year masters of architecture (they are weighed the same in the field). If you choose to be licensed, its 5 separate tests in the US (used to be 7) and a certain amount of hours in the field. All that to say, it is not unattainable if you believe this is what you are meant to do. I've always been creative, but also loved figuring out how parts and pieces of things work, and really good at making stuff. Architecture and design allows you to think about things in a really zoomed out approach but also down to the screws. You're constantly learning because every scenario is different and a unique way to problem solve. It's rewarding to walk a space and see little details you did the average joe overlooks- like little treasures you've left behind! Best of luck to you and your journey. ❤

@@katryanaorange2092 In Canada, at least 3-4 years each in Canada if you choose the bach/undergrad degree, at least 2 years for the interior decorating diploma (which I graduated this year with), and at least 3 years if you are doing an Arch diploma. According to my friends at Waterloo who are doing arch. there, you might/will have to do a coop if you are in Arch. My friend at Ryerson who is doing Interior Design says that her program doesn't have a coop (not 100% sure though). When I studied interior decorating (diploma) at Humber, coop/work placement was optional. I think every program is different when it comes to having coop/work placement so I suggest you apply to even if it is optional or not. If you got a diploma first then a degree second, you will have 1 year off (depending on if it is an honors bachelor - Interior Design is an honors bachelor) in Canada.

The proverb is that Europeans think 100 miles is a long distance but Americans think that 100 years is a long time. Many Americans think traveling 150 miles in the morning, spending time eating lunch in a distant town, and then driving 150 miles home is a tiny day trip and a trivial afternoon adventure.

Molly, it WILL take TWICE as long as quoted to get the renovations done. Often longer, but at least twice and twice the budget. And right now w/ Covid so many things are backordered so order everything NOW even if you aren't ready for it. Sinks, appliances, cabinets, all of it. Lead times are 4 months or more. I think 6 mos for a full gut is ambitious the way things are right now and some elements won't even be delivered til then. Good luck. Head this advice: order everything NOW.

I am the same way where I have watched so many KZbinr "I bought a house" videos where they just can immediately own these beautiful multi million dollar homes as a young adult. Well girl, you were paying rent that was probably just about as much as your mortgage. Although, I understand you will be paying 2x during the renovation. I am very excited for you! By the way, banks are the worst place to go for a mortgage for a self-employed person. They don't like us! I worked in the mortgage industry in the US for many years, and we used to have to bail out deals from banks all the time because they have such narrow guidelines as to what they will accept. A mortgage broker has a lot more options. I am so glad to be out of that business now!!! Also when you renovate a house you get it the way you want it! Looks like you got a perfect sunroom for you and lavender and your new service dog to sit and warm yourselves. Lavender will probably love that space! Very excited and can't believe that you have to tell people to not come looking for you!!!!!! WTF is wrong with people???? Sheesh!

I am still renting, and I'm so happy that the owners have arranged landscaping services every 2 weeks, so I don't have to mow the lawn. There is a lemon tree that I can pick up after, but I don't have to. I like to do it as exercise, picking up 1 lemon and walking it to the trash and repeat and having a pile of lemons that represent my exercise. I can have a fresh lemon right from the tree any hour of the day. It has been a wonderful oasis this past year.

Excited for you! My wife and I are in our 3rd house in 27 years. But the first one we had built from the ground up. Instead of a 4th bedroom, I had them make it an office/den (no closet). Designed the basement to be finished and fit an 8' pool table. I don't drink, so instead of a wet bar, I had them build a Coffee Bar. Sink, extra outlets, and room for a mini-fridge. Now, we are planning for plants in the landscape to attract birds, hummingbirds, and butterflies. 9,000 sq ft yard with grass included. Tough for an above-the-knee amputee to maintain. I found a riding mower without a gas pedal to us though. I'm able to mow and use a cordless weed eater to trim. My 2 dogs love the bigger yard (the last house was only 800 sq ft. of yard, yes eight hundred to a nine thousand sq ft yard). The move was from Phoenix, Az (I'm native to AZ) to the city she grew up in, Wichita, KS.

Congratulations I’m so excited for you. I also really relate to your reasons for wanting to purchase. As a blind woman myself I purchased my house for years ago and I can’t tell you how much of a life-changing and such a good decision it was. One of the most terrifying things I’ve ever done also. I purchased the home completely by myself for myself less than 15 months after leaving social assistance (ODSP). I think my parents were really worried. It was incredibly risky I had just gotten a permanent job for the first time with the Ontario government after years of facing discrimination and precarious employment. Like yourself I didn’t want to spend a single cent I always felt like the rug was about to be pulled out from underneath me at all points and I still feel like that. However the house has been a sense of security, and safety for me. I no longer have to worry about sketchy landlords are very sketchy situation with other tenants that I was finding myself in. And like you said at the end of the day if things don’t work out I can always sell. But one thing I would say after four years of owning is I am not financially strapped like I thought I was going to be and it’s not nearly as scary of an experience also. It’s amazing to have something that yourself. Proud of you and enjoy your news home!❤️

Living in a condo vs a house is better too because you don't have to worry about hiring someone to take care of your lawn, or ground maintenance etc. The condo takes care of all of that. Having that security is nice too. I have a house on it's own land and having to take care of the lawn and snow removal is a real pain. I'm glad you found something that checked off all the boxes for you that you need now. Maybe it's not ALL of them, but after a while, you can sell that and get into one that does check off even more. Honestly, many of the KZbinrs that do videos on "their new house" and they are in an expensive location don't actually own the house, they just rent it. Nothing wrong with that at all, but they shouldn't act like they own the home when they don't. It's not shameful to rent vs buy.

The big obstacle for me before I bought my condo was fear of buying large pieces of furniture. Where was I going to get the money for a sofa, or a dining room table or a new bedframe? In the end, my prosperous and impatient mother said "If you pick the place and sign the mortgage, I'll buy the furniture for you." I realize that this is unusual but it is the truth about what happened to me in my life.

Congratulations! Good job with your budget, planning, and outlook. Your example of the deeper truth on this subject is refreshing. I also bought a home within my budget and considering my illness and ability to work over time. When I became unable to work (USA) it was grueling but I made it through with help. There are options in the US, but they're difficult to find. My suggestion is to look locally first (state, city). I recommend insuring all your loans with a policy that makes the payments when you're unable to work. Finally, as more encouragement, a neighbor who is medically retired has been renovating homes and doing a beautiful job of it for years and years. Wishing you and all of us bumble bees all the love and flowers we need. 💗🤗🐝🌼

congrats Molly! I bought my first home in 2019 with my dad as a co-signer on my mortgage. I bought a mini home and pay lot rent (instead of condo fees lol) and it comes out to about how much I spent for a bachelor apartment but for a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom mini home. Great starter - and in 5-10 years I can sell for a house with land.

Or keep it and rent it out for extra income. I use a property management company who maintains it and rents it out for me. I have no contact with the tenants and I get a check every month the management company takes their fees out and sends me the rest.

@TrueBlindGaming
@TrueBlindGaming 3 жыл бұрын
@@MollyBurkeOfficial well here are a couple suggestions: [1] some games that are great for blind players are called MUDS (multi user dungeons). They are text-based role playing games. A popular one that is played by blind players is called Alter Aeon. Great community and sound paccs that brings the action to life. [2] I personally use computer programs called emulators to play old nintendo games. The special thing is that the emulator allows me to save my place and reset that saved state if I mess up or need to try an action again. That along with using headphones for the 3d sound allows me to get through major titles like Legend of Zelda. [3] Very recently, A mainstream game called MineCraft is getting a lot of attention for accessibility. its a sand-box survival game where you get to build anything you want in a 3d world while trying to survive from being killed and starving to death. The entire world is made up of stacked 3d blocks, so its easy to navigate. Plus the MineCraft community has created Modifications to enable the game to work with screen readers so you can get information about the world around you. If you need anymore information let me know.

Congrats Molly!! I just closed on my new townhouse yesterday so I'm right there in this world with you! It's my second home (first was a small 1-bed condo in a big building and now I'm moving to a 3-bed fixer upper townhouse) but this round was a major rollercoaster. It's such a big exciting purchase and also so terrifying! The thing to remember with real estate is that you can't really see it as debt and see it more as an investment--because from day one you're going to start building equity and come out with more money than you spent (especially if you're renovating and majorly upping the resale value!) Best of luck in your reno journey and I'm super excited to watch your reno content while I'm renovating my own house! I'm heading out to pick up my keys in an hour :)

Oooh, I relate so hard to this video lol. I just bought my first home in March. Luckily for me, I was recommended by others to get pre-approved first before getting a realtor and looking for a house. Which was really great because the house that I ended up buying had 5 offers on it and sold on the first day it went on the market. Mine is a bit of an older house, built 1957, but the previous owner did a lot of renovations, so it looks pretty good for it's age. I spent the first few weeks living here saying "I live here!" every time I came home lol. It's such a nice feeling owning your own home for the first time and being able to make renovations and not have to worry about a landlord. And the mortgage payments are about as much as a one bedroom apartment in my area would cost, and i get to keep the house at the end of it.

So happy to see the start of your Homeowner journey Molly! I’m waiting to complete on a house, and as a disabled person it’s been very daunting but at the same time after the best part of a decade living in an inaccessible private let I couldn’t get my wheelchair in, out or around independently I am looking forward to options. Like you said there’s a lot of considerations as someone who is disabled and can’t drive as to the type of location and property, far and above the usual “it’s a cool area” or “I have friends here”, healthcare, accessibility, infrastructure of the area all have to be considered way before the cooler priorities. Wishing you well on your latest endeavour, and congratulations, I’m heading for 40 and this will be my first non-rental, but in this market it’s an incredible privilege.
Time to demolish my new home!
