As a former FJ Cruiser owner I can tell you: - Prepare for windshield replacements if you drive on the highway often (windshield is nearly vertical) - Terrible gas mileage especially with any kind of lift or larger tires (~200 miles per tank...) - Will go ANYWHERE as long as ground clearance is not an issue - People will ask about the 3 windshield wipers when they notice them - As with most Toyota's of this era, self done oil changes are very easy - Recalibrating the compass is very fun & onlookers will think you're crazy (I did it in a Costco parking lot) - The rear hatch opens sideways (not up) so access can be limited if there is a car parked behind it - These WILL be future classics if in good condition (My guess is in 10+ years over $50k for low mileage & good service history) Great video as always, Tyler!

I’m from the middle east and i own a 2020 fj cruiser fully loaded it comes with crawl control A trac and diff lock the thing is a beast off road and not to forget to mention that it has double fuel tanks that adds up to 160 liters and can go up to 1400km on each fill up , it has 200,000 km and still feels new its truly an amazing vehicle . sadly it was discontinued in late 2023 .

That’s why I bought a 23’ 4Runner. It basically has what 15 year old drivetrain. Just enough modern convinces, yet retains what made Toyotas so reliable. I go once a year to get it Krown’d (undercoated) so hopefully the frame and body will last me a long time in the salt belt.

Toyota will never make another motor as reliable as the 1GR-FE. I used to commute from Richmond, VA to Washington, DC about 15 days a month. I was the second owner, and by the time I traded it in for my 4Runner it had wracked up over 400,00 miles. Unfortunately, with many Toyota trucks, rust will mechanically total them, these included.

The 4Runner is an ancient (good) design at the end of its lifespan. That, the 2nd gen tundra/sequoia, 200 series LC, and this are the last of the good ones.

I proudly own a 2011 voodoo blue, and it’s never let me down whether on or off road. The FJ Cruiser was the 2004 super cool concept car that was built in the Japanese HINO factory (yep the truck company). The FJ Cruiser is just built reliable (no squeaks or rattles) and is a comfortable cruiser for gravel roads, tar-seal, beach or off road trails. My advice is to change the bulbs for LED, replace all fluids regularly then enjoy the point and shoot reliability of this fun iconic car.

My buddy from Purdue bought a yellow 2007 FJ when he was there, to replace his dodge challenger which broke down in 2 months, all he needed to do was an oil change and replacing brake pads. Unfortunately the FJ was T-boned last year and got totaled, but luckily nobody got hurt. I guess the only way to take a FJ off the road is traffic accident...

When the FJ Cruiser first came out Toyota brought a bunch of them out to the Cal4Wheel off-road event near Barstow, High Desert Safari, and let people drive them on some of the trails. They actually performed quite well. Most people that bought them and started doing tougher trails swapped in a solid axle up front in place of the IFS.

That FJ doesn't need oxygen sensors it needs catalytic converters. It's probably not the rear brakes leaking, it probably the axle seals.

I lived in Japan for a year and can attest to them having a higher degree of pride in workmanship, on average, compared to the US or Canada. Their culture rewards work sacrifices and excellence more than ours does. The quality of products usually reflects as much. The quality of Japanese goods went down when trade agreements forced them to move various production lines out of Japan.

I have 2 Mazdas made both built in Hiroshima. The build quality is definitely better than Honda or Toyota's US made stuff. It's not a HUGE difference (Honda and Toyota still have decent build quality and QC standards), but the material choice alone is absolutely superior. And I don't think it's so much that their work culture rewards sacrifices and excellence, so much that it punishes a LACK of sacrifice and excellence. From what I've heard, their work culture is more toxic than even here in the US.

It's like the automotive industry stopped caring about the desirability of reliability and affordable upkeep. "Lease and leave" seems to have contributed a lot to that. Especially on the higher end. Depreciation is steep because upkeep after warranty is insanely high. Now it's hitting the middle tier as well. EV's may help change that. A lot less to go wrong.

I am a pre-owned dealer and I used to get all the trades from a small local Dodge-Jeep dealer . I got a one owner 07 FJ with 297k miles on it in a package deal of their 😮trades . I always thought that they were fugly and I still do but I just sold it after 12 years and 125k miles with a total of 425k and I got $300 more than I paid . I found out early on while asking about its excellent reliability , that these were produced in the Hino plant along side the heavy trucks . They are just unbelievable vehicles . I got 15 mpg around town and 18 highway . I am missing it enough that I’m hunting another one .

Just got back from Moab, UT (9/23-9-28). 1423 miles round trip. 2008 (FJ Crawler edition) performed perfectly traveling from PHX to Moab. No complaints at all. MPG is expected: 12 - 13 with ARB roof-rack, bumper, IPF rack lights, skids, etc.

Hi Hoovie! In case you don't know - the audio in Car Wizard's office was surely fucked up by ultrasonic cleaning (which was obviously running in the shop close enough to the office). That's a thing you can sort of control - ask if it's running and ask to pause it while you're recording (it's OK to stop and resume ultrasonic cleaning). Thanks for the videos!

I have a 06 Land Cruiser with 200k miles and will be replacing the timing belt soon (second time, every 90-100k). It’s a $2k job at the dealer including a new water pump, coolant flush etc. People complain about timing belts, but I disagree. Every 100k miles I know I have a new timing situation that works perfectly, a new water pump and coolant and a decent engine check. Good for another 100k. Anyone with a timing chain can’t say the same thing. They stretch, chain tensioners and guides fail water pumps fail, and you just don’t know. Timing belts are not bad imo.

@@aged7968 YEP AND people dont realize thats partly why the 2UZ is so reliable. It gets coolant parts replaced on an internval as well. Most do the thermostat and coolant flush with timing job. I have a 2016 Touareg and a 2013 FJ cruiser. The FJ looks bigger sitting next to it. But the VW is bigger in almost ever dimension. Touareg is 5" longer, 1" wider, but the roof is 4" lower and that makes it look smaller. A 4 door land rover defender or Jeep is about the same size as an FJ. FJ looks huge because it was designed by someone who played with Lego in the 80s, probably...

2024 JD Power Dependability study contradicts the title to hoovies video. They may have recalled 100k vehicles, but recalls are actually a good thing because they have recognized the issue and are taking action. I can't count the times a company like GM has knowingly let an issue go for years and has to eventually be sued before they will do anything. I've owned 2 FJ's and countless other new and old Toyotas, still same quality.

‘95 to ‘05 is the golden era for Toyota’s. Best cars ever. Tech was just good enough for nice reliable EFI and minimal gadgets, and the overzealous safety and emmisions regulations hadn’t come in yet. I counted up the other day, currently have 13 Toyota vehicles from that era.

Love that you got an FJ. I have a 2013 Trail Teams I bought new. The only major issue with these and all Toyota trucks of the era is frame rust if you live in the North East. Fluid film or something similar is very much worth doing.

Enjoy your drivable Blindspot. I drove a 2010 FJ for several years for work. My biggest complaint is the entire veihicle is a blind spot except when looking straight forward. A pillars are huge and block view both left and right and you can see nothing behnd you. Backseats are a joke, you cannot put adults in back and carseats dont fit, great for groceries. Super reliable and great on sand pulled many a stuck fullsize stuck truck out of sand, mud, water, etc.

To give Toyota some credit, the issue with the new Tundra engine is not necessarily a design issue. The issue is metal shavings from the manufacturing process were not getting fully cleaned out. I’m sure besides that issue, those engines will be fine.

But I have doubts, as Toyota in all likelihood was not honest about the problem being "machining bits" from the production process, as the affected engines were made in multiple plants around the world (and thus it's very hard to believe no one in many years noticed the problem, or that they use the exact same process in all their plants to cause the problem). Cheap quality parts is the more likely culprit.

I have a 2012 FJ in Australia. 200,000 km nothing has gone wrong. Still feels tight as. A couple of cool features. The rear window opens so you can carry long objects, you can hose the plastic floors out and the suicide doors make a great privacy screen if you need to take a leak on the road! Only criticism is the original paint can’t handle the Aussie sun. The thing is a weapon off-road and in the dunes.

As a former owner of the same year, same color, FJ Cruiser the frame likes to split around the front shock mounts on a 2007. It's corrected on later year models but, from 2007-2009 there's a recall that needs to be done to add a brace so that metal doesn't crack. The frame is from a Land Cruiser Prada, and if the car was ever in the North East, the frames love to rot out on them. They also like to develop Torque Shudder. I also recommend installing a back-up camera because reversing them or parallel parking them is a giant pain.

The FJ Cruiser stopped production in December, 2022, the last market they were sold was in the Middle East. All production was in Japan by Hino Motors, though it stopped sales in Japan in 2018 and the last 4 years were entirely exported to the Middle East.

It's kinda sad that Toyotas now are not seen as economic cars in Europe, they are seen as more luxurious car, literally competing with Audi and VW. Nowadays it's Daihatsu, Suzuki or Dachia. Toyotas got so popular in EU due to it's affordability and efficiency, right now a new Yaris costs like at least 30k - 50k euros depending on options. You are super lucky to buy a Yaris that is above 2015 with low milage that costs under 10k

I've been driving my 2008 Toyota 4Runner (SR5 2WD) for 16 years with no problems at all (with normal dealer servicing). Iowa winters are no problems for me. Everything from paint to interior still looks and works like new (no rattles or squeaks at all). The only thing I have replaced is tires, and batteries. I'm still on the original shocks, brakes and spark plugs. I even get 20.3 mpg in the city. Best vehicle I've ever owned.
