Your story about your first fast bike reminds me of mine on a brand spanking new '87 Honda Hurricane 600 that belonged to the mechanic I took my car to as a kid. I was admiring the bike and he said, "You know how to ride?" I said I did, failing to mention that the biggest, fastest bike I'd ever ridden at that point was my uncles '70's something 250XR. Mechanic says, "Here, take it out and open it up." Yeah, he did, I kid you not. That was 30 plus years ago, the place was called "Master Tune" in Gallup, NM. I can still see the bike in my mind... yes, those first fast rides stick with you! I'd like to say I took it out and ripped up 66 on it (Highway 66 runs through Gallup), but I'd be lying. I got out on the road, slipped it into second and gently twisted the throttle and had my teeth pulled to the back of my throat. I idled the bike in second back to his shop and thanked him. He laughed and said, "Yeah, I'm scared of it too!"

Not a single person I know of opens a barn and proclaims weak valve springs will keep a graveyard vehicle down. It might float valves, it might miss, but it will run so send it if it's doomed to die.
@davelowets2 жыл бұрын
@@spacecadet0 Do you completely understand what can happen to a high-performance engine such as this, if it has weak valve springs? It can do MUCH more than just "miss" or "float valves". With the valve lift that this engine certainly has, the valves are awfully close to the pistons. With weak springs, the valves can EASILY kiss the pistons if the springs can no longer control them properly, ESPECIALLY at the RPMs that thes race engines operate at. That would instantly destroy the engine. With a normal "economy" or lower power OEM engine the much lower valve lift, lower engine speeds, and the engineers designing in more room for safety, a weak valve spring isn't a huge issue. But in an engine like this, it most CERTAINLY IS. 4 valve springs for a 2 cylinder is inexpensive, and there's NO reason NOT to do it.
@PatricioGarcia1973 Жыл бұрын
@@spacecadet0i don’t think springs will go bad by just sitting. I bought an R1 that was crashed, didn’t run for three years. I fixed the bent forks and wheel, put gas and oil, and started it up. @@bdr7557 I used to think that also, but then I found out first hand that they DO... My drag race big-block has a roller cam with close to .750 lift and valve springs with 850lbs of open pressure. I used to put it away for the winter without touching the valvetrain at all. One year when I pulled the car out of storage for the season, I noticed a head gasket leaking. I pulled the heads off to repair it, and figured I would give them a quick once over as long as they were off the motor. As I was checking the valve springs for tension, I noticed that they were all fairly close except for a few of them that were pretty far out of spec compared to the rest of them, I'm talking like by 50+lbs. I went back and looked at the position of the lifters in the short block as I hadn't rotated it since I removed the heads, and sure enough, every valve spring that was down on pounds lined up with every lifter that was up on the cam lobes. I now pull the rocker arms off when I put the car away for the winter, they are shaft rockers and I can take them on and off without even having to re-lash them. If the engine was completely sealed off in a showroom environment (which it sounds like it was), then I doubt there is rust. Also, you are correct about spring distortion. PPHD had a V-rod trike, if you'd be interested... it's stashed in back, cause the owner couldn't pay, years ago. Never seen one quite like yours!

you tube it ..you will find destroyers doing the 1320 in 9.3 seconds ...in was in 2012 Andrew Hines on a Harley Davidson was the first man to ever run the 1320 in 6 seconds on pro stock motorcycle ... this happened at the U.S. Nationals 2012 Indianapolis Indiana Lucas Oil Raceway Park racing capital of the world and my hometown. Sean I never had a good word for you when you first started out as you are always sort of bad-mouthing the Harley-Davidson but now I have to eat crow Sean as you are now a true gangster for Harley-Davidson. As I want you to know there are even hog the Harley Owners Group Club that don't even know this motorcycle exists read along did they ever know Harley-Davidson won the national drags 10 consecutive years in a row against Suzuki Hayabusa. Sean today you look like you're doing pretty well for yourself and you will never need the money that that bike would bring so if you ever sold it

BTW, I just got done restoring a 1985 Vmax drag bike, hopefully going to the track tonight. Built engine, nitrous (not hooked up yet), chain drive conversion, extended swing arm. It's an amazingly awesome machine. I need to add a air shifter, 2 step launch and get the nitrous setup soon. Colors are orang/black/carbon fiber, it's for CLL leukemia awareness for my wife's battle. I've wanted one since I was in HS when it came out in 1985 and was the world's fastest production bike. My wife drag races at Norwalk OH. I think i have seen 1 of these there once. I used to have an 02 vrod with small mods for 115 hp that i raced, unfortunately sold it to buy her a trailer for her drag truck. awesome stuff. ive had a lot of bikes for being only 32, vrod was my favorite and i had it the longest with no issues at all. good stuff.

Should preference it as, fast for a Harley. Liter bikes and bikes like Hayabusa and Ninja zx12 run 9-10 second and they're street legal with all the extra weight of lights, gauges and fairings. And they don't need wheelie bars to do it.

Am I the only one who laughed when the dude said they can get 200 horse and 200 ft/lbs out of an M8 with a cam change?
@Joes4323 жыл бұрын
He was so full of shit, the Stage IV's from Harley for the M8's push 141 HP and about 140 ft-lbs and they are not a "simple cam change" whole new head and pistons crying out loud. Also, I don't believe him on the valve springs. I own 2012 V-Rod anniversary edition and had a destroyer. They don't just "self-destruct." and if it were the case, getting the valve covers off on these V-Rods is a 1-2 hour job and people like Fitzgerald motorsports machine their own parts to rebuild the destroyer, same with Vreeland's.
@danberkel52373 жыл бұрын
@@Joes432 hell, check out shadetree surgeons channel where they dyno the 131 M8. Just like Shaun said, makes around 130 HP. Ive only seen one harley make over 200. And the motor had so much work in it there was no harley parts left in it
@TearlessGosling3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the cam change was the 200*200, because he was talking about forced induction and such, I think he was claiming a cam change could get you close to that destroyers numbers, which is also unlikely.
@danberkel52373 жыл бұрын
@@TearlessGosling I rewatched it. Qoute "we can get close to those numbers with a cam only in the Milwaukee 8. It's pretty simple to make over 200 HP"

Yup my buddy had 3 at one time and then bought the Bonneville vrod that Harley had and we went to the salt and he was able to set a new record. In the altered engine form the bottom end bearings wouldn’t last more than a few minutes, the crankcase would flex enough that the bearings would self destruct and often spin. After his first pass on the flats the oil looked like gold metalflake paint. Put in the spare engine and pulled tuning out of it to set record.
@davelowets2 жыл бұрын
Yep. High-powered engines with factory crankcases tend to do this. I'm into drag racing Oldsmobiles and with a factory block, every time I would get over 600-650 h.p. out of one, the main bearings would end up wasted in no time. The OEM blocks just weren't strong enough and would flex, pinching the bearings against the crank. I stepped up to an aftermarket 4-bolt block with MUCH beefier main bearing saddles and webs, and a Billet crank, and now I have no more bottom end issues at over 700h.p. and 7000+ RPMs.

Is that thing fuel injected? In the middle of the video when you fired it up, it didn't seem to rev up until after you let off the throttle. That much hesitation leads me to think it's fuel injected... or the video was somehow out of sinc, but only on that part.

So it makes the same power as a 30 year old Japanese bike? Very impressive for a Harley Davidson!
@chevyon37s Жыл бұрын
Let’s not forget this bike is nearly 20 years old now itself and no 30 year old jap bike is going to be laying down sub 10 second 1/4 mi times like this bike does. Despite have the same power. Heck even the late model jap sports bikes, very few of them can put down a sub 10 second 1/4mi time, especially without a good rider.

Totally disagree with that mechanic. That engine is fine, go run it. I bought a gs1100 drag bike that Haden’s been started in 20years. Took to track and it ran like a raped ape. That’s like saying your springs on your car are bad after it sits for 14years with car sitting on wheels. Springs are fine.
