Probably a texture thing. I remember eating it for the first time as a kid and immediately spitting it out because of how dry and strange it felt in my mouth. Now i really love it on my rice cakes (though i still prefer the smoother pastes over the clumpy type)! Can't say its an acquired taste, but i definitely took a while to get used to the mouthfeel.
