I finally tried the Schecter Nick Johnston strat style guitar, and it's incredible. Also tried a PRS McCarty and a Fender Ultra 2, but I enjoyed the Schecter the most. So much fun to play.

I bought that exact guitar brand new from PMT Bristol. It fell off a Hercules dual guitar stand when the other guitarist took their guitar off. You can see the crack in the finish, that most likely helps the price be a bit lower. Good to see it’s gone to someone who plays it so well and enjoys it!

You've been playing it so much lately, how could not fall in love with it ? I would be right there with ya John providing I wanted or needed another guitar. Fenders are cool, but there's something about PRS. I do not buy instruments with the idea of reselling them...I buy them because I love how they sound, feel, look and if they're lightweight..My PRS SE CE 24 has a 10" radius (which I prefer flatter fretboards) and weighs 7.3lbs !....and frankly, this Core PRS Silver Sky looks good on you ! p.s...the last bird is an Owl. The birds on a Paul Reed Smith (PRS) guitar fretboard are a recognizable trademark of the brand. The birds are: Peregrine falcon: 3rd fret Marsh hawk: 5th fret Ruby-throated hummingbird: 7th fret Common tern: 9th fret Cooper's hawk: 12th fret Kite: 15th fret Sparrow landing: 17th fret Storm petrel: 19th fret Hawk landing: 21st fret Screech owl on a branch: 24th fret, only on 24-fret models

Yeah you literally have to not subscribe, or the amount of content chokes up your feed and irritates you. Since the algorithm pushes quantity, it likes that he uploads so much and shows it to you even if you're not subscribed, just because you already watch. In the end it hurts him, because he gets fewer subscribers despite more clicks, making it a matter of treading water with small talk rather than creating a library that stands the test of time. Oh well, I do the opposite and look where it got my channel. Flippety skwat.

I have a Core Silver Sky with Maple neck. It’s one of my favourite guitars to play and has my favourite neck shape and profile. It’s really light and resonant. I prefer light guitars, but I also have some guitars heavier than Thor’s hammer. When I got the SS, I was looking for a Fender Strat and I tried quite a few and they were all really nice, but none of them sung to me. Except persons for a custom shop one that was way out of my budget. And I thought I would try a SS on a whim. I typically prefer rosewood necks … and there I was falling in love with a maple neck SS. Choosing a guitar is such a personal experience. You still sound you whichever guitar you play. That’s cool. Enjoy your SS.

I owned a Silver Sky and I wanted to bring up something that no one seems to be talking about much with this guitar. John Mayer said in an interview that Paul has unlocked the secret to the perfect slack in the strings to achieve the "buttery" feel with this guitar. This very factor is 90% of a guitar for John, and I agree, it is for me too. I have played only a couple of guitars over the years that have this perfect slack and action when bending/vibrato. It's tight but at the same time nice and satisfying to bend. The string goes where you want it to go. The Silver Sky absolutely has this. I don't know how he achieved it, but it's to do with neck angle and I think a slightly deeper neck pocket and avoiding having the saddles cranked up too high achieve this buttery, slinky feel. This along with the neck shape make this strat the funnest strat to play that I have probably ever played. I think more builders should be focussing more on this buttery feel and achieving great string tension, because it is definitely a thing! I've played so many custom shops that don't have this at all and feel stiff and cost a fortune. They sound really good and the build is of great quality, but they don't have this buttery feel. For me, the pickups really didn't sound good in the SS and so I sold it, but I am tempted to buy another and change the pickups. The feel is just fantastic, as well as the nicely rounded neck shape.

I have a 2001 American Series Stratocaster that has been my number 1 guitar since I bought it way back in October 2001. I have owned many Stratocasters from different price points and nothing has really been able to outshine my Stratocaster. Fast forward to this year and my old 24 year old Stratocaster’s frets are pretty worn out. I got a PRS NF3 se and it’s honestly become my main guitar. It’s not a silver sky but it is very S type. Narrow field pickups sound like a noiseless pickup and have worked well for me. The 10” radius feels good and the pattern thin wide neck is very comfortable. The big game changer for me and I’m sure sliver sky is the same is that beveled cutaway! I have room to get that 22nd fret on PRS guitars and I’m kind of over buying Fenders and Gibsons because of it.

I had a core Silver Sky. Great guitar, but I’ve got smaller hands and despite my best efforts I couldn’t get used to the slightly bigger neck vs the typical C-shape Fenders I’ve gotten used to. And although I loved the bridge pickup on the PRS, the pickups overall were missing something that i liked about Fender pickups, but I can’t articulate what that actually is lol. The guitar obviously suits John, sounds killer and he shreds on it with ease!

@@Stephenmichaelsguitar The pickups suck arse. No offence to prs. The guitar itself, at least the neck, is really great, and the whole thing about Paul discovering the secret to finding out how to get the perfect slack in the strings is 100%. This is one of the most important factors in any guitar to me, is the slack in the strings. The "buttery" feel, as John Mayer calls it. John Mayer said this in an interview and I totally agree. This guitar has that. Really great slinky feel and ease/satisfaction of bending notes. Neck shape is great. Hated the spikey bland pickups. They had no harmonic content and were harsh.

My fender V2 61 strat is 3.5kg, but V2 51 tele is 4.05kg (basically LP classic weight), which I had to sell. I've tried a V2 57 and a 70th anniversary v2 54 strat in the store, both were super heavy. Surprisingly for Pro2, my tele is 3.28kg and strat is 3.45kg. I've bought and sold more than 10 pro2 tele/strat, heaviest I've seen is 3.7kg. I've heard good things about US prs silver skys, but I am gonna stay with Fenders, just pick the light ones. Have fun!

4:02 is it a horizontal crack in the lacquer between the top side of the bridge edge and the screw that goes all the way to the body edge? It's like we can see where the pieces of wood are joined together. It seems then that the pieces are not big and there are three or four pieces. I could be wrong. Maybe this kind of plywood is made of large pieces and it doesn't affect the sound much, but for me it would be important to have less glue. It's also disconcerting how they achieve good resonance and lighten the weight. Sky has a very large and deep milling under the pickguard, as a result this comes close to semihallow. If it was one single guitar, I would definitely prefer a Fender. As a second or third guitar and for a nice price of 1.1K I would definitely consider a US made Sky. For the full recommended price probably not. All in all it's a good instrument with good marketing but not without flaws for me.

But I do love my SE Silver Sky and the core model prices used are very tempting now. Aside from build quality, "custom shop" guitars seem to hold their value better than I've seen for most PRS's (hence the attractive used prices on core Silver Skys and other core models).
@QuoVadis88
@QuoVadis88 Ай бұрын
7.25 inch radius at the nut is ok but not higher up on the neck. I need a flatter radius higher up on the neck so that issue is a deal killer for me with respect to the Silver Sky which is still an excellent guitar. But then 22 frets is a modern feature so not vintage. The HSS ultra can be switched to SSS with the S1 switch in the Volume Dial. My Ultra Luxe actually has Stainless Steel frets and a Floyd Rose clamped system which I prefer for unfettered whammy bar activity. I don't know what my Strat weighs but it is very comfortable to play all night at a gig. Cost is not important if the guitar delivers flawless performance all the time. Plus I use Cobalt Ernie Ball 9-46 strings, which would shred average frets. Not having to re-fret a guitar saves money and the time it takes for such a big job. Fret dressing is no good because the frets are too flat and low after the filing.

I lie that the volume knob is slightly lower and more of a witch hat, so it's less in the way but still there. The neck heel is more friendly and the fact that it's a PRS means you know it will stay in tune well. I really think they fixed a lot of the issues and created a better guitar for players.

What is that mark/line on the body of the Silver Sky ? Is it wood shrinkage under the paint or an actual split ?
@bluesoverlord
@bluesoverlord Ай бұрын
That means the body is at least a 2 piece. Solid colors usually are 2-3 piece.

You nailed it with the review of this guitar.. I love mine, the more people don’t like them, the better. They just get cheaper to buy a 2nd which I want .. Bang on the money about the price range. I thought exactly the same. Custom shop fenders are silly money, and the neck on the PRS feels better.. was no brainer for me. As for the fender Ultra , I feel exactly the same way. It’s not what I look for in a strat. I like the traditional specs of a strat, otherwise why not just buy a charvel.

As well as you play, I think you can access the things that make expensive/quality instruments like Custom Shop Strats what they are. If I have a Sliver Sky , Mexican Strat or a Custom Shop Strat, Its all going to sound the same due to skill level. If I ever get "good", I will buy a $5000 Custom Shop Strat

I'd buy almost any S style guitar over a Fender. The Silver Sky's are fantastic, but I have 2 Suhr's at the moment. Both made with Paulownia - 6.5 lbs

I was considering buying a Silver Sky and a friend borrowed me his for a week. I just couldn’t bond with it though I was really wanting to. The vintage frets ruined that guitar for me. That made me consider all the hype about how this is ‘updating’ and ‘innovating’ the Strat. One of their biggest marketing points was how this was the ‘Tesla’ of Strats. Spending time with it I didn’t find anything innovating about it. It’s just a fairly normal, well made Strat made by PRS and sporting their signature aesthetics on it. Nothing innovating or much different about it other than the carved lower horn. The vintage frets were a pretty bad and backwards choice for something that is about ‘updating’. I would argue that Fender with the new Ultra series is much more ‘Tesla’ than the Silver Sky. Updated and modern characteristics and aesthetics. Truly amazing, modern instruments that are in my subjective opinion much more worth their money than the PRS. Ibanez with its AZES series is also a great, modern take on the Strat. Just my two cents and subjective opinion.

Happy to know you love the guitar. It probably wouldn't work for me as I 'm not a big fan of chunky necks...oh well...I actually purchased a Silver Sky SE and I sent it back right away. Maybe the core model is a whole different thing? Anyway, love PRS guitars in general but this particular one never clicked with me - and the colors are so meh...

Weight has become a big factor for me. The reason being I have a more relaxed and fun stage presents with lighter guitars. I’m able to move more freely and less rigid. That leads to me having more fun.😊

I bought a realy 2000s American Fender fat strat used for 1100$ CAD a month ago. Its not mint but gives it a vintage feel and I like it. The quality in late 90s and early 2000s seem appropriate for fender guitars IMO. I get a real closet guitar as a bargain as opposed to going custom shop. PRS are second to none though in terms of craftmanship... With Fender, you can be lucky or not but in general it's all about if your instrument inspires you to play.

I really wanted to like it. But the thicker next is harder for me to play with short stubby fingers. Where as John Mayer is over 6 feet tall with long fingers so I understand why he might have designed the neck as slightly thicker. Still very happy with my 70's Mexican strat though.

What's that line in the finish of the body of your Silver Sky? Its visible several times during the 12 minute point in this video. Its a little above the bass side of the trem? I'm not generally a Strat guy. I've owned 5, and sold them. The last time I went looking, I checked out the Silver Sky SE (pretty good), the Fender Player Series (the one I played was crap), and several American Fenders in the $1500-2200 range. I ended up buying a used Fender American Vintage Reissue (AVRI) from (I think) over 10 years ago. Great Strat, vintage specs all around, but its a bit heavy (I haven't weighed it). I plan to keep this one because even though I am not a Strat guy, I think everyone should have a Strat in their arsenal.

It is likely due to the 3-piece body. The paint can show that effect with time. I find nice John doesn't care. That means John has found the perfect playability in that particular guitar he doesn't care about the aesthetics.

Trying a first generation silver sky (7.25 radius, larger frets, brighter pickups) 5 years ago left me very impressed. It was superior to many Fender CS Strats including a Mayer’s signature fender I had at that time. Mayer’s fender had humongous neck, you need a big hand to play it, not so with the Silver Sky. Pickups on the Silver Sky also sounded better than the “big dipper” pickups in the Fender.

If you like it that’s great. However, I tried it and it’s not my cup of tea. Comparing it to Fender is fair enough but I’d rather get Fender, even if they’re a bit heavier. A Suhr classic blows both out of the water, by far the best well-built S-style guitar out there.
