I bought the world's CUTEST spider... I know.. who would've thought you could call a spider cute right? But no it actually is, it's the regal jumping spider (Phidippus regius) which is the REAL LIFE Lucas the spider cartoon here on youtube. I also have a pretty big fear of spiders, and thought it would be an interesting experiment to see if I could overcome it by getting one as a pet... I'll take you through a collection of vlogs I've taken over the last 3 months, from unboxing, to setting up the enclosure, upgrading, all the way to handling and other stuff... maybe some lil cries n screams in between lol :)
lucas the spider's channel: / lucasthespider
DISCLAIMER
I didn't actually purchase the spider solely to get over my arachnophobia and don't recommend anyone do the same. I've wanted one as a pet for a really long time for other reasons and did a lot of research. The spider is also captive-bred, I purchased her from a reputable breeder in the UK.

@@meganlacoste jumping spiders like the species of the one you have are like the cats of the arachnid world and are curious to a fault and their curiosity unfortunately gets them hurt or killed especially curiosity of humans that would kill them on instinct if jumped on by one. Unlike venomous spiders with forward facing fangs that impale their prey jumping spiders fangs face towards each other sideways like pinchers to impale the prey they jump onto and since they have no venom just drink the fluids from the body of their prey alive which is why the jumping spiders move quickly as they may have only one chance to jump onto an insect they make a meal of or have to get away from a predator quickly to avoid being a meal themselves. Their front legs give them information about the world as they feel and taste with them. They're harmless to people and prey on the insects that prey on people like mosquitoes, tick and venomous spiders.

What comes a close second is how a Praying Mantis looks at you. And as much as I love Jumping Spiders, a large Praying Mantis is a bit better handling. They don't really roam like Jumpers do and sometimes you don't even need an enclosure, they will happily live on an indoor plant in the center of a room and stay there as long as you keep it well fed. You can have it on your shoulder and go about doing stuff and it will enjoy the ride with you. They can be surprisingly affectionate and capable of forming a bond with you. I used to even have mine sometimes sit on its own pillow beside my head and pillow and it would just sit there while I napped. It was really something special.

💯 I am certain this is the case, that they can sense or interpret the state of your ANS at least to some degree, somehow. I know how this works between mammals but I am less researched with mammals vs other animals, especially insects and arachnids. I’ve had spiders be completely chill with me because they’re out of my way and I like and value them. Other times I’ve walked past them closely and one of us will feel at least a little unsettled, starting a nasty cycle of fearing each other, because they would respond by threatening to jump on me. I knew it was an empty threat for this species of spider, but it still made it difficult for me to maintain calm 😂

Congratulations!! I ended up doing something similar when I was 23. So I was very arachnophobic as I got bit by a black widow when I was very young. Luckily we were close to a hospital and all I have now is a small scar on the bottom of my hand. Anyways I was at our local town fair, just throwing some ping pong balls at these little fishbowls and the guy yells out WINNER! I didn't even know what I won! They guy hands me this small container that was semiclear, and it was a small Tarantula. Now I grew up in Arizona and was used to seeing Sidewinders and Scorpions and Tarantulas in resin or like on belt buckles so I thought that's what it was...... UNTIL SHE MOVED!!! Like, I seriously bout had a panic attack right there and then!!! But as I sat there staring at that container I kind of made up my mind that I was going to try and keep it. So I took it up to a pet shop (this was in the early 90's so you couldn't just Google this $#!T) and got a terrarium and a book on Rose Haired Tarantula's after the guy there explaining what species she was. Gus the shop clerk offered to help me with Rose and get used to handling her....THAT took some time, because she was young, she was quick....and those little bursts of speed FREAKED ME THE F OUT man...im talking cold sweat! But over a few months time, I got used to her, and her to me and after about 8 years I gave her to another spider guy I knew because I couldn't keep her where I was moving and he had a male.

I think jumping spiders are the only spiders that I find really cute. The way they turn and just look at you with their tiny little eyes... Idk why other spiders tend to just feel a lot creepier, but jumping spiders I can handle as long as there is space between us. The issue is that I tend to want to look at them closely since they are really small compared to us, so it's best for me if they are behind glass or something so they can't jump on me - otherwise I'd freak out regardless.

Also if Youre trying to catch them to get them out of the house (or squish them 🙈) it’s really scary and in my head they are going to randomly without warning jump ON me. I too had a bit of a spider/bug thingy goin' on, and I found that watching videos with Jumping Spiders were particularly helpful, in that they were so golldanged CUTE I fell in love with them. But the most amazing thing is that it helped me look at ALL other small buggish animals with new eyes, and ironically, to see myself through their eyes, whether it be two, or eight of them. And you are so very right, we are HUGE animals to them, can we be as brave as they are? Can we risk our lives to trust, as we ask of them?

I've always had an intense fear of spiders. Last August one of my worst fears came to life. I received a nasty bite from a brown recluse spider. Their venom is referred to as "necrotic". If the bite is bad enough and introduces enough venom to cause a reaction it does one of two things. If the bite is in a fatty area of the body, the venom generally stays in the immediate area. This is when the venom literally starts liquifying surrounded tissue. These are the bites that leave big holes in the victim that turn black from necrosis. This can be serious enough to require limb amputation. My bite took option 2. It entered my bloodstream and went systematic. The venom generally attacks an entire system such as the renal system or cardiovascular system. My nervous system was attacked. It's an incredibly long story that ended up causing my spine to slide sideways so far that the bottom of my ribcage is/was scraping my pelvis. When several of the nerves along my spine became Inflamed ( which caused them to become compressed or pinched) the spine is designed to move away to avoid more pain and irritation. This sounds bat-shit crazy but yes, it does indeed slide over. On top of that, my spine has been rotating which has opened the door to a myriad of other bat-shit crazy issues. The pain has been immense. At last count I still had 7 severely pinched nerves. My back is in a constant state of spasming.. I am now a firm believer that a certain amount of fear isn't a bad thing! I'm from Indiana and had no clue that we had a spider here with venom that's more toxic than a rattlesnake. 😱

Keep the spider out of that window, in general away from direct sunlight. They have no eyelids as you can probably notice and ALL species of spiders and tarantulas are becoming distressed when sitting in direct light. What you also want to avoid is the GlassHouse effect, where the inside temperature rises above acceptable due to exposure to the sun. Rule of thumb, if you are comfortable then your little S is also comfortable, temperature wise. Best of luck with your crawling furry :)

I began working on arachnophobia when my little brother was growing up, because I didn’t want him to inherent such a difficult fear. I started swallowing my own fear to show him spiders I caught in the house to provide it as a curiosity and a source of learning, like other bugs I’d been showing him and trying to help him feel calm around. @NamelessAidan Жыл бұрын
@@aerosynaxis982 To most people there isn't anything wrong with it as long as you are providing for their needs and enrichment, as with any animal. Some people argue it is wrong to keep any animal in captivity because it is depriving them of "freedom" which is possibly fair for some types of species that never thrive in captivity because they are arguably advanced enough to have a concept of "freedom" or they have a very large natural range- particularly some large highly intelligent animals like primates, dolphins, etc. For most animals I personally think they don't have that deep of a concept of "freedom" the way humans perceive it, as long as they have food, shelter and other needs covered including enrichment they are more than happy. Of course we can't actually ask animals what they want and most of them also don't have much of an understanding of like long term consequences to their actions and such so it can be a complicated moral issue.

This makes me remember the spider I had last year (2021), he randomly came out of no where and built a web near the window, at first when I saw him, I was scared and wanted to catch it to let it out, but once I tried to, he ran into the window, like, there was a small gap and he ran inside there, so I couldn’t. After that the next day, I tried again and again to catch him, but it never worked so I gave up and let him stay there, I told him “as long as you stay there, I’ll let you stay in this house” I’m pretty sure I named him Steve or something, honestly I don’t remember it but something with S. But anyways, we were roommates for about 4-5 months? I think. Me and him, we’re both scared of each other, because whenever I would interact with him or just stare at him, he would suddenly go into his hiding hole (the window gap ofc) but one day he suddenly disappeared. I wondered where he went but I figured he was probably just hiding in his hole for a bit because he did hide in there once for 3 days, so I waited about 4 days and there was no sign of him, just his web he created, I waited for about a week after that, and ig he left or had an accident and died 😞,but basically few days after that I got a spray bottle that had water in it, and took away his web, I feel bad about it but I had to. I still wonder where my spider roommate went, but yes. This is my story. If you read this, thank you. And goodbye spider roommate Steve.

I actually have a similar story. About two years ago when I was a 1st year undergrad and lived in campus, I had a female spider live in the outside corner of my window for the entire year. I tend to think that she indeed entered my room during wintertime because yeah lol, I think it was still her that made that web in another corner from inside the room. I think she might've been a false widow or something of the sort? But anyways I know it was a she because let me tell you that as soon as the weather warmer, she had BABIES. But they didn't bother me much either. All in all, I can say I got along pretty well with that arachnid family tbh. And not to mention that during my last day at another student accommodation, I had a pretty darn big common house spider that I let crawl around in my room until I left the next day because before I figured out how to trap it and take it outside it had gone off, I couldn't find it. Again, no probelms, no overnight spider bites or anything. It just remained there even after I left I suppose. And now it might be a tradition thing, because I barely got my new place and just this week, another fairly big spider made its appearance. I couldn't take it outside my window so I literally just opened the door for it and shooed it out in the halls lmao. I'm sure the lil fella can take care of itself. living in florida, the most common pest we get are cockroaches. mainly in summer, i can bring myself to release them, plus, they will just come back in and infest the place. ive killed about 5 in the past 2-3 weeks, so it gets pretty bad in summer despite spraying poison. i almost got bit by a recluse, was sitting near a brick pile in a field and it jumped out.

As a fellow extreme arachnophobe, it really DOES help to understand spiders a bit more. I took zoology this past school year and learning about spider anatomy and how they work during the arthropod unit really helped lessen the fear and make me appreciate the little guys a LOT more. They may be a little creepy and a little crawly sometimes, but they’re certainly an essential part of our ecosystem and I’m willing to share the world with them :-)

Also I SO appreciate that you actually took the time to research and properly care for little Mitzy. I was fully prepared to be angry at mistreatment and impulsive animal adoption but I was 100% relieved to see that was not the case! Pet spiders deserve to have the same amount of respect you’d give a more “traditional” pet.

First of all a MASSIVE well done! They are such fascinating creatures. I have 9 of them 😊. 2nd having a top opening enclosure isnt good as it can disturb their hammock and this could be fatal when they are molting and your opening to mist the enclosure. Front opening enclosures is what is recommended. 3rd you also need to add more ventilation they not only need ventilation on the top but ventilation on the sides of the enclosure too for cross air flow. Im not sure you still have her as this video is a year old but maybe it will help some others. Jumping Spiders are well known for helping people with Aracnaphobia as they are so cute and have big personalities.

I think you made a VERY wise decision by going with a jumper rather than a tarantula as your first phobia "exposure." And good for you for dealing with your phobia. So many folks just would rather not deal with their phobias. Hopefully your fear will eventually go away when you come to believe/feel (rather than simply "know intellectually") that the vast majority of spiders are actually harmless and in fact very important creatures😉

Gotta agree about her making the right choice in _not_ getting a tarantula. All I could think about was the size of their fangs (they're so big they almost look like bird talons). I think exposing her to that would've only made her phobia worse. There's something to be said for going with the less intimidating option.

I grew up in Australia where we were taught to be afraid of spiders. I wanted to get over my fear of them as well. I went to the Stafford pet show, and got the chance to hold a tarantula. She was really soft and her feet felt really nice in my hand. Has it cured me of my arachnophobia? No. But like you said, I find them more interesting now, but they still terrify me. I refuse to kill them if they come into the house. I'll always just relocate them if I can.

“Taught”? I live in Australia and we weren’t taught to be scared, cautious maybe, but not scared. Majority of kids in my primary school loved to pick up the harmless spiders like daddy long legs, myself included. I live and grew up in rural Australia though... not from a big city.

@@friedchicken3242 I grew up in a small mining town in the Pilbara area. 1000 miles from any big city. So if there was a serious spider bite, we would have to wait for the flying doctor to get to us, and by then, it could well have been too late. So yeah, we were taught to be scared of spiders to reduce the probability of a fatal spider bite. This was in the early seventies as well. Maybe things are different now.

@@annettereynolds1995 maybe things are different nowadays, idk. I guess we just have to keep in mind that different programs teach different things and education towards such things have evolved over time. I do think teaching people to be “scared” of spiders is a bit excessive, though. Wary and cautious yes, but not scared.

I was never terrified of spiders but they always freaked me out. Jumping spiders fixed that for me i can hold a jumping spider and be fine, and all spiders in my house either get to stay or if they seem to wander too much i snatch them up in a cup and bring them back outside. Jumping spiders really are the best. My favorite part about them is how they interact and look around. Its like they have expressions that we can read and almost makes it feel like an animal we're used to like a cat or dog, although the jumping can be quite the surprise when its not expected!
