Those M110 280 engines are typically pretty robust but they are very thirsty and not the most powerful. The easy and worthwhile swap these days is to get a 320 M104 engine. Much, much more efficient, more power and lots of turbo kits available too.

That G (probably a 240/290GD) looks like a former German fire brigade car which is so cool! I am a bit worried however you'll remove its steelies and remove its charm by modernising it or something, please preserve it! If nothing else but because original examples are fetching pretty high prices now.

It doesn't look like a former fire brigade car, the colours are wrong. A fire brigade 280GE would be completely red or neon-red (and not this yellow-ish red this car has), maybe with some white parts. Not red and black. The URL on the hood isn't in use anymore, seems to be a failed business. It also definitely had a sign on the door at some point in it's life, you can still see where it used to be. This car has definitely gone through multiple different business owners and seems to have had a really rough life. It deserves a full restauration, but that would probably cost more than the car is actually worth.

But this is typical of this red after a lot of exposure (see pictures of these or similar fire department vehicles for export), you can see this where as you say there was a sign on the door, the location of which is typically where a department logo would be. Other details that point to being ex-Feuerwehr include: The two lamps on either side of the roof at the rear, commonly seen on fire brigade vehicles (notably also on Mercedes T1s for example), but also shared on things like ambulances and municipal vehicles of the era. And the hatch on the roof, often seen on emergency and military applications (notably on Unimogs and NGs for example).

I agree, you must must must keep it old school. Steel wheels all the way. They will take 235/85x16 tyres which will jack it up a bit & increase the gearing. Get yourself onto the G Wagen Register for some ideas. The old school W460 which that is, if left as is without flared arches and original grille and bumper are becoming increasingly valuable. Probably best with either an OM662 turbo 2.9, or OM605 2..5 TD both 5 pots. Or an OM606 TD 3.0 6 pot replacement engine. Because the gearbox & transfer box are separate and have a propshaft between them, you can use the Merc manual 6 speed gearbox out of a C220td on any of these engines. There is a wealth of information on the G Wagen Register website. Only downside is that they do cost more to rebuild/ restore the the equivalent Land Rover Series or Defender. When he’s talking about 2002s and not fitting inline 6s due to weight and cost it reminds me of here in the uk everyone sticking S54 into everything it’s heavy it’s not actually that powerful for its weight and it’s 6k for a good one. Meanwhile the m62b46 from the x5 is 50kg lighter v8 more power more tourqe and sounds amazing
