A couple of thoughts: (1) I'd be interested to see how the F9S does with the original shaft and (2) is there a 9 degree F9S model (I'm not sure I trust that dialing down the loft of a 10.5 degree driver is the same as using a 9 degree driver).

It has "usually" been shown over the years and many videos that knocking down the loft on a 10.5° head to 9° is not the same as having 2 9° heads go at it. The 10.5 head reduced will likely still spin more. Not a fair fight. That being said, shame on you Cobra for the deception!

Dialling up or down the club head doesn't actually change the loft it actually just changes face and lie angle to create lower or higher launch conditions, but can badly effect spin axis and actually have the opposite of the desired effect especially if your changing loft to try open and close the face

Good on you Rick for pointing this out. Consequently, the original F9 (2019) can most likely be purchased used for around the same price, which is something you recently advocated for, and clearly has better performance. SO many of us appreciate you always looking out for other golfers.

The "was £379" sticker on the club is blatantly fraudulent and illegal. That F9s was NEVER £379 and was only on sale for £249 at Clubhouse golf. They should be ashamed of themselves for trying to con golfers who can't afford brand new top of the line drivers. If they want to bring out a cheaper driver, brand it that way. we're not mugs.

I'm abit disappointed in clubhouse golf have used them for a few years now and have bought 2 sets of irons in them years,don't get me wrong they are ligit but it is concerning that if I walked into store I would of seen that driver at a was £379 reduced to £249 and thought I was getting a bargain.thanks to Simon and Rick for highlighting these drivers

It may have been suggested already, but I’d be curious to see a head to head with the original F9 in a turned down 10.5° head. Cobra did make it known that their 10.5° head on the F9 was a higher spin setup vs the 9° head, regardless of where you dial the loft sleeve to play. Still expecting original F9 to win out on ball speed with that CNC face, but I’d guess spin numbers come closer

Well this is timely… I was seriously considering buying this online after your recent comments about picking up an older driver and recommending the F9 as great option (on the podcast I believe?). Great explanation for me lacking a minimum of 10 yards on my driver. 😄 I bought the F9-S as my driver for the last season as it was marked down from 4.000 NOK to 2799 NOK. So i paid about 232 Pounds in Norway. I like the driver, but wasn't aware the differences! Now if you'll excuse me, I will drive to my retailer and smash his head in with my F9-S.

Great work Rick and Simon, also you had a better shaft in the F9S for this test compared to what you get as standard so the actual F9S performance out of the shop is likely to be even worse. The helium shaft is a substandard product in comparison.

Just to quash a bit of Misinformation here, a real UST Helium is an extremely high quality lightweight golf shaft. If the shaft in the F9S is a “made for” then your not comparing the same shaft

Just to play devil's advocate, the S did give consistent numbers 270 carry 2500 spin . Maybe the difference would be less for a 18 handicap club golfer ??

I found a new F9 with CNC face with a Helium senior shaft and Arcos on line. Just hit some golf balls today and love it. I'm going to try the shaft that came on my LTDx and see how it feels. The F9 staying in the bag. I'm about to order another one to save when the other is done. Thanks for the video on the club.

I got my F9 in 2020 when they had introduced the Speedzone. Got a new one for $249 U.S. I love it. People spend up to $500 every year on a new driver for a minimal increase in distance. Spend your money on a club that you will use every hole, get a good putter!

Great review! The only additional testing variable I would like to have seen would be to put the F9S head at 9° in the original shaft. I suspect the dispersion would have been greater and the loss of distance would have been even more noticeable compared to a real F9.

I would think that the S head in 9* would actually preform just as good as the standard 9* head since he used a 10.5* head that naturally spins more AND he lowered the loft down 1.5* which also additionally adds more spin.

It’s a store special. Taylor made and Callaway have been making them for years. Taylor made used to make a non-adjustable version beginning with the RBZ to sell in budget sporting good stores. The pricing is a standard store technique, show the MSRP and mark it down to the actual selling price to make it look like a deal.

Like you say before Rick look at second hand clubs from a reputable company like golfbidders in UK or 2nd swing golf in the US, especially if you on a budget. You can get a real f9 with cobra connect and milled face and a 9.5 /10 rating (still in wrapper) for $325 or around 240 £

I’ve had the F9s since summer 2021…..it came in a Cobra F9 package set with 3w, 21o hybrid, 5-SW, milled-face putter and a bag for £999. Great deal. I knew when I unwrapped the driver it didn’t have the fancy face and the tech at the top of the grip but I didn’t care….because £999 was a great deal for the whole set and I loved the driver (still do). Not that I don't believe your results, more so just to see the test, I'd love to see a test of 2 original F9 clubs; the first a 9 deg set to standard, the second a 10.5 degree set to -1.5. Obviously in theory, they should be identical, but I wonder if they'd produce identical spin numbers and launch angles since one is being changed to a 9 degree club while the other was manufactured as such. There may be slightly different geometries in the heads as far as MOI and center of gravity that can influence the spin rates...It would be great test of the mechanisms used to change the lofts. I dont have a problem with a company that wants to make a lower priced club that resembles a Top-Line club, but, I DO HAVE A PROBLEM WHEN THEY DONT USE A DISCLAIMER.Every company SHOULD let you know what youre buying. Great shout out for Simon firstly! In my opinion there are 2 main issues - the fact that there isn’t an S on the bottom of the club - if they are changing the face they could add this and the main thing which is the most worrying is that they are selling it at a discounted price - if they sold it full price for £250 there wouldn’t be the same issue as the customer would be aware that it is a more basic stripped down product. £379 as you said is more than the original so the bog standard punter is being made to believe that they are getting a superior product than the original priced at £350 - good review as always Rick!

The reason why whey don’t have a Cnc milled face is because they had a ton of recalls on the faces with to sharp grooves ruining Golfballs, remember this cnc milled was a big thing but it was like really damaging the balls, like cracking the covers. They knew about it and replaced them without a problem. So the main reason why these are smud as the new f9 s is because these are leftovers from the f9 covered as smu, just without a cnc milled because they didn’t want any hassle again. I still have 4 f9s with to sharp grooves in the storage cobra didn’t even bother to pick up.

I thought the shaft the S came with was not has good? But I also know that shafts could effect spin I like to see it tested like you buy it off the rack. Because if I have to buy a 100 dollar shaft then it cost the same as the F9. Thanks for a great review.

Although loft is the same the 'S' is a lofted down which will change face angle and lie affecting delivery, also the swing weight could be different, it's not necessarily the tech.

Could the discrepancy in ball speed and distance be due to stated loft being the same but actual loft being different? With manufacturing tolerances the F9 S would only need to be 1/2 or 1 degree of loft higher to get that ball speed drop and spin increase...

Its pretty obvious that Cobra had a surplus of F9 heads that had not gone through the CNC milling process, theyve thrown them together with some spare stock shafts, without Arccos thus saving costs. It does show that the Milling of the face has an effect

Rick, interesting it has taken more time for people to understand this. I listened to one of Clay Ballards vids right after he became a Ping staffer. On his video, he said that while he was at Ping getting fitted they had told him that many of the major brands degraded/cheapened their drivers on the second production run. The Ping guys said that Ping never does that, their production runs are always the same and no cheapening of components or material like other manufacturers do. So I guess Cobra is one of them cheapening their drivers after launch. Just crazy.

Rick, do you measure the actual lofts of the drivers? 10,5 can actually be11,5 and 9 can be an 8, due to manufacturing tolerances. I would think there´s no way to cut 20% off spin by just CNC milling the face. My driver says 9 but is actually 9,5. (I know this because it has been measured by the manufacturer. It´s from Wishon golf, now owned by Diamond golf in UK. Known for the Sterling irons I guess. They actually offer a service of hand picking for a specific loft from their inventory, so you could request a 9 degree head with 8 degrees actual loft and they will go through their inventory to find one. That´s pretty awesome if you ask me!)

Got to say, I think you dropped it on this in Rick, you should have compared a stock F9 to the stock F9S. To me that would give the average golfer, that doesn’t have the resources to get a custom fit driver, more of a true comparison. I played an F9 for 1.5 years, and it never felt right to me, I much prefer the Sim2 that I am playing now. Thanks for all you do!

Looks like they are following the TM/Callaway way of doing things. TM did this recently with the 2017 M2 line and Callaway did it with the Rogue line

Another point with this review Rick when you are looking at spin rates when you had to dial down the F9s you reduced the spin rate by about 500rpm or so and your spin rates were up around 2500 if you kept it standard it would’ve had even more spin and likely even less carry distance so definitely something to the face and this model… thanks for the great review Rick

Would have been interesting to see how it reacted if you'd hit it straight out of the wrapper, with the shaft & grip they included. I'm no expert but might that have made a difference? Whilst I appreciate the integrity of your test, perhaps that could have been a good 'control' to really cement your other findings. Very insightful though.

I think we probably would have seen even worse numbers with the S version right out of the wrapper. I am curious about the difference in the shafts though. If seemingly the head alone led to a 500-600 increase in rpm, I think the stock S shaft might be even higher which would result in less distance

big box hardware stores so the same thing with power tools. they get special models made with lower specifications. the secret is in the model numbers

I looked it up and this model is available in a large Canadian retailer- in the description it is prominently mentioned no arcoss and no cnc milled face- not sure what the in store information is like. price is $299 cad. The worst of all of this is the way its “marked down” I think that would be illegal in Canada.
