Of all the years I've played Skyrim, I never knew Vilod was a dude. They way Ralof said both lines about being sweet on a girl from Helgen and about Vilod's mead, I assumed he was talking about the same person. But yeah, sure enough, when the stormcloak loses his head at the chopping block, Vilod shouts: "JUSTICE!"

Yeah I think in an effort to keep the dialogue flowing, they switched subjects without making it overtly clear that they were doing so. Either way, Vilod made some tasty mead - RIP to a legend!

Hibiscus is a weird ingredient to me considering it's a tropical flower and skyrim is alpine. I know it gives a great color though. I'd use wildflower honey instead, if I were doing it... which now I think I have to. This was super informative and delightful, thank you!

Yeah I’ve thought a lot about what I would do differently if I were inventing this recipe - I think something like rose might be a more appropriate choice! I also think I want to use a local wildflower honey on my next brew of it.

maybe in skyrim there's some flower with a similar flavour? hibiscus is very very sour (to me) so i think adding it is important for the flavour as it adds a bit of sourness which rounds the flavour out very well i find.

Yeah I’m terrible at remembering to do it at the beginning of a brew, and without that initial measurement any additional ones taken later in the brew don’t tell you any useful info… I usually just base my guesstimate off of the stated alcohol tolerance of the particular yeast I’m using as a loose starting point for a ballpark ABV 😂

if you were shooting for 2.5 pounds of honey but went to 3 pounds, you probably only hit around 14% ABV since there are not enough sugars in 3 pounds of honey for a yeast to take it to 18%. So, in the end, you guessed right. If you had 4 pounds of honey, that would easily be achievable as I have done it myself several times. overall, a good presentation. I will be doing my own batch of this when winter gets here.

I'd probably use poppies instead of hibiscus. Certain species of poppy are edible, and can also survive in colder climes like Skyrim. I feel like that flavor aside, it would be more true to the theme. If you wanted to keep it to canon flowers, you might use lavender instead.
@quenchquestdrinks Жыл бұрын
I like it! The only thing about using lavender is the Honningbrew recipe from the ES Cookbook also uses it, so to keep them distinct I think the poppy might be the right move 🍯

This is another example of the Official Skyrim Cookbook not being QUITE accurate. There are two types of hibiscus. One is tropical/subtropical, and the other is arid/desert, so you would NEVER see a hibiscus of any kind in Skyrim. That said, There is that hot springs area between The Rift and Eastmarch, so you MIGHT be able to use that as an explanation for desert hibiscus existing in Skyrim. As for yarrow, that does grow in forests and grasslands, but that does not look anything alike to Skyrim's "Mountain Flower" varieties. For the real-world equivalent, I would use the in-game model as the reference. Based on the in-game model, all the different colours of Skyrim's "Mountain Flower" are actually Paintbrushes, whether that is the Indian Paintbrush, Common Paintbrush, Golden Paintbrush, and so on. The different varieties of Paintbrushes are a variety of colours, so the different colours of Skyrim's "Mountain Flowers" are all the same family of flower. Also, the flower pedals are edible, so using them in mead would be plausible. So, if you ever decide to remake Vilod's mead, I suggest doing a Skyrim-correct version, using what actually grows in Skyrim. So, your flower ingredient will be Paintbrush, for the accuracy of using Skyrim's in-game "Mountain Flower." I also suggest adding Lavender, because Lavender grows nearly everywhere in Skyrim, and is becoming popular in real-world beverages. As for the honey, the Skyrim-correct honey is the real bee farm honey you can only find at farmers markets.
@quenchquestdrinks2 жыл бұрын
I agree, the cookbook has some glaring flaws. It was definitely written by someone who doesn't quite understand the real-world influences of the game and cut some corners as a result. Working on some alternative recipes, but also want to make the other ones from the cookbook first.
