In part 2 of this TRAVEL GUIDE for CYCLISTS I share my experience of travelling to 27 different countries and over 48 different locations all over the world to ride my bicycle! The stuff I discuss in this guide are: Bike BAG vs Rentals, Packing list, Nutrition, Planning ahead, finding routes and more. This is part 2 of the TRAVEL GUIDE. Riding bikes is what I love to do and I try to take my bike on every holiday but also ride as much as I can on work trips. Since I travel year round as Airline pilot I get to quite a lot of different spots! This has massively increased my experience on different countries and the possibilities.
One amazing trip we had was to Taiwan for the KOM Challenge. Find out more about cycling in Taiwan here: bit.ly/CyclingTaiwan

I have done both with taking my own bike and renting. Of course, with your own bike you know it and you can just jump on and be on your way. With a rental you have to match the fit a bit once you get there (even if they have put the saddle to the correct height). I just came back from renting a bike for a week, and it couldnt have been better and the service was amazing, if I wanted any adjustments, or help finding local routes they showed me the way. Plus the price included spare tubes, head unit mount, and pedals, could also rent lights for 5E Personally, I have travelled using the cardboard box method, but that is as I dont travel with my bike enough to buy a real case, but the cardboard box is super strong, I have transported my bike from EU to Au twice with no problems. One tip is REMEMBER A SPARE HANGER, mine snapped just before I had to ride the stelvio, then I had to rent a bike anyway, not fun.

This is an awesome guide ( that happen to come just 1 month too late for me, so I had to do a lot of thinking myself but ended up with similar list for the rental bike usecase ). While travelling in NL on business from US recently I went with a mid spec TCR rental in Eindhoven, staff was very helpful, dialing in my fit using key measures I provided. 40euro well spent for the day!

Good advice. I think packing an extra derailleur hanger is good idea and removing the derailleur from the hanger when packing is a good idea too! If I was travelling by air I think I would remove the fork and get a smaller box as well.
@jasperverkuijl
@jasperverkuijl 2 жыл бұрын
Most boxes let you leave the fork in but that would make the package smaller indeed. Taking the derrailleur off is what I do as well.

Move bike bag Bangkok brand. It’s hybrid hard and soft. Love it. Taxis stopped taking me with the cardboard box and a hassle to transport through the airport but works in a jiffy just fine. Only take the wheels off that’s it!

Check your airline's policy on gas canisters(puncture bombs), some tell you to put in carry on luggage, others in the hold. Also, make sure your multi toll goes in the hold, I once had my cycling victorinox confiscated at security because they thought it looked too sharp and dangerous, which was nonsense but you can't win these battles. Luckily the airline kept it for me for a week until my return and I didn't have any mechanical issues on my trip requiring the multi tool .

Hi Jasper, Great video! What is your thoughts on the EVOC Road Bike Bag Pro? From my own research, it seems like a mix between a hard case and a soft case. And I suppose you could easily wrap some bubble wrap around all of the fragile parts.
@jasperverkuijl
@jasperverkuijl 2 жыл бұрын
I think the evoc is a really nice bag from what I've seen, like you said a mix, but it's still not as solid around the handlebar. I'd have to see it /use it to really know.... Bubble wrap won't help against a good drop from a belt e.g......

Bikeboxalan all day long. Takes maximum 15 mins to pack bike and box is nigh on indestructible. Wouldn’t trust my bike in a soft case, particularly when you see how baggage handlers throw things around. Great investment which has paid back several times over now. Another great video by the way 👍

I've been thinking about trying to fit three bikes into two boxes when we move internationally. I have a full-suspension MTB that could be completely torn down and packed in pieces two other bikes. Given what each bike box will cost as luggage, I feel like it's fair play.
@jasperverkuijl
@jasperverkuijl 2 жыл бұрын
That could work but not sure. All depends on the boxes etc. Just try a service like " bike flights " (e.g.) that ship your bike for you. No hassle on the airport.

@@jasperverkuijl I have the "Triathlon easy fit" box. I'm riding a Tarmac with integrated cockpit. I can confirm that you do NOT need to remove or losen the handlebar.
