This is a video that I never wanted to make, but let’s be honest: it was inevitable. MrMobile has officially broken his first folding phone, and of course, it’s the one Michael Fisher bought with his own money.
On this episode of Into The Fold: what happens when you wreck your Motorola RAZR 5G (2020) - and why it’s not a reason to distrust either Motorola or foldables in general … because my Razr didn’t break the way you might think.

[ABOUT INTO THE FOLD EPISODE 6: R.I.P. RAZR 5G]
This is the sixth in a series of episodes exploring the many facets of life on a folding screen. From the best foldable phones of 2020 to the bleeding-edge world of folding-screen laptops, Into The Fold is MrMobile’s showcase for the most exciting movement in mobile technology since 2007!
Episode 6, a list of lessons learned from MrMobile’s first broken foldable, was produced following 40 days with a Motorola Razr 5G / Motorola Razr 2020 retail unit purchased by Michael Fisher. Motorola sent two Razr 5G / Razr 2020 cases for inclusion in this video, but neither Motorola, Chase, nor any other company paid a fee or otherwise offered compensation in exchange for this coverage, nor did any company preview or approve this content before publication.

Thanks for the link to this video. Its nice to know that finding these parts is not completely out of the realm of possibility. By the way, you said in the original video that you do not blame Motorola and while I agree with that up to a point I still think they share some of the blame. After all, why would you make a phone with a glass housing and then not have replacement of those glass pieces as a repair option or even offer the parts up for sale to those who would like to do the replacement themselves. It just makes no sense whatsoever. Either make the front and back cover out of metal or offer replacement glass parts if making it out of glass. Nobody should have to pay $1000 for a new phone simply because a piece of glass is cracked.

@kornkernel2232
@kornkernel2232 3 жыл бұрын
@@penedrador Yeah, back then I dropped the phone, only to worry to drop it on screen head-on. Basically only 50% chance you will break a screen or just land on the back-side which is just plastic, worst is the camera lens might break. Heck I even dropped my phone onces before and the screen didn't even break, only the aluminum sides were dent and front have one line of scratch.
@nomadben
@nomadben 3 жыл бұрын
Glass on the back of a phone is one of the absolute worst trends to ever happen to the phone industry. Glass still makes sense over the screen due to its greater scratch resistance, but a quality plastic has all of the benefits and none of the drawbacks of glass for the back. I'll take it every single time. Glass backs are nothing more than intentional fragility to make more money on repairs or new phone sales.
@kornkernel2232
@kornkernel2232 3 жыл бұрын
@@nomadben Yeah, the fact pretty much everybody on the high-end smartphone have both glass on the side of the phone. Personally I like the aesthetics of them especially when it was first introduced with iPhone 4. But now it has just become too mainstream that the smartphone has become quite stale and leaves no choice since every high-end device is fragile. At least when we had mix of plastic, aluminum and few glass phones, we have choice if we prefer certain aesthetics and may have to leave with a compromise. Aluminum doesn't support wireless charging, glass phones are fragile, plastic phones well didn't really have downsides at all except that some can felt cheap, but Nokia back in the day were plastics and still fel premium though.

It's just so insane to me that companies can make people think "I shouldn't have broken it" or "I should have had insurance" when they don't offer repair and/or parts for the most common phone fault. If we let companies get away with this madness we will be buying a new car when we get a crack on a windshield.

It's sad to see such a beauty break, But I am really happy it actually acted like a regular phone fall and even better. For years I use all my phones with cases (most of them rugged) and tempered glass protectors, funny thing is, I probably can count on both of my hands the times I ever dropped my phone. I'm against insurance cause usually at it's cost by the time I might need I'd rather consider a new phone or I've paid the insurance same amount or more that it would cost to repair, but check your options anyways, yours might be better. Hope to see you get it fixed or a new one easily and keep enjoying that beauty!

Reminds me when I broke my phone. I dropped it on a thin rubber floor, it bounced, ricocheted off a wooden cupboard, and then hit a metal pole. OLED screen slowly died after that, but there was no visible damage. When I went to get the screen replaced, repair man said he found a micro fracture in the screen using his massive magnifying glass, probably caused by when it hit that metal pole. It was just enough to puncture the OLED panel.

This video actually made me sad and I could definitely feel the pain. I once felt it when my beloved Nexus 6P broke it's software and was stuck at the bootloader loop. That made me cry !

Having a flexible part would be harder to break than anything else, so the folding prt is the good oart for those who drops it.
