just a few pointers. 1) When working with such small smd devices, it's a good idea to have adequate tweezers. fine point ceramic tipped tweezers are going to be a massive improvement for you. 2) instead of trying to affix such small SMD components with a soldering iron, it's better to wick the pads, add a small amount of solder paste, place the component, then with a hot air wand and low air speed, flow the solder paste. This will save you a lot of time fiddling about with the iron, and the components will simply "move" into place due to surface tension of the solder when it attaches to the pads, and the component. if need be, you can always come back in with a J tip, or a hooked tip and clean up any excess solder before cleaning with IPA. 3) While i commend you for using copper tape to preserve the other SMD capacitors, you failed to do the same for the die stack you were working right next to. A copper slug, or a few pennies sat on top of the CPU's IHS is a good idea. 4) Finally, it's reasonable a good idea to clean flux off while it's till hot. A toothbrush might be OK for larger components, but can easily dislodge smaller one's such as the cap's you were soldering. Chem-wipes, IPA, and a small brush is really all you need to clean the flux up. Place a chem-wipe wetted with IPA on top of the area that has the warm flux on it, use a brush dipped in IPA to massage the chem-wipe around gently, it should absorb the flux and IPA mixture without leaving fibers. repeat as many times as desired.

Ok, I’m an electronics engineer and do this as a daily task, so I know how tedious it can be lol, get yourself a 0.1mm iron tip, 0.1mm tweezers, and some no clean flux (as it’s not sticky). There was plenty of solder on the pads already but your not doing that easily with hot air anyway, clean it really well with ipa, then hold the new cap onto one side pad and solder it then touch in the other side. Then clean it, re-flux it, then gently push down on the middle with your tweezers and re-solder both sides. Be careful with the amount of heat you put into the cap as to much and you will destroy it. You need to be quick and accurate with the iron 👍

I immediately saw the two missing capacitors on the PCI-E link, the big worry then is if the pads and traces survived. Luckily it seems like they did. Good job fixing it.

I broke off my fan header from the way I grab it to remove USBs, trying to avoid the power button as well. Now I've got a dual pi4 fan sitting on top of the old official cooler run off the GPIO. Works just fine. So a case is a good idea. Oh and I didn't notice til I could smell it getting hot. Still works fine.

Nice. Maybe you could have a go at replacing the JST fan connector ? You have to be careful with how you handle Pis, I found out the hard way.

@@IntriguingTech There is absolutely no way that I can do it. It's too small and trapped by the USB 2 connector. It's really no big deal for the desktop, the fan on there now is quieter and I think it even stays cooler. Worst case I pick up another for $60 in town.

I'd have just returned it. That's what I did with a Raspberry Pi 3 or 3 B+ I broke off one of the capacitors that's close to one of the screw holes when I was trying to put a screw or a stand off in and they gladly sent me another one and then I sent them the broken one as I did not have the tools or the experience to fix it myself. I think it was Element14.

Nice of Element 14. Some companies have better return policies. I could have tried returning it but there was a shortage of Pi 5s at the time but didnt want to wait 4 weeks.

@zxcaaq Well, on x86 (except Windows 11, but Windows 10 and lower and also most Linux Distributions) most users have installed an OS and software that use only features that are already available nearly 20 years. All newer CPU commands or not used by the most users. So in fact it is nice to have a CPU that is newer then 20 years, but all the new features or not used by the most users. I have a lot of computers. For example my Intel/Windows laptop is 14 years old and it is much too fast for my use case. No need to buy a newer one.
